Default Here we go again on Ebay and SU

I just checked ebay tonight and someone has the Dream catcher set and the Wild wild west set up for auction and the the wild wild west set is at 96.00. Why oh why do I not have the luck to buy a set, hold on to it and them make a killing?

I couldn't find a wild wild west set auction. But I did find the Dream Catcher. The one auction isn't even an "auction". The seller has set a Buy It Now price of $99.99.

Checking completed auctions of Dream Catcher did reveal that one set has gone for $59.99 and another for $43.67.

I don't know. I can't think of a stamp set I want THAT BADLY. But if you have the income then I guess you can go for it when something you want comes up.

Editing to add: I did find some completed auctions of Wild Wild West. It's amazing....one sold for $167.53 and another for $97.98! Whew. That just doesn't make any sense to me.

I have seen some nice SU stamp sets selling for $45 to $60 on buy it now. Haven't seen any of them sell, but the seller relisted at the same price?! Sorry, don't like any of them that much, even if I could afford it.

I sometimes wonder if the auctions or BIN at crazy high prices are the same people re-listing the same thing because they didn't sell at the outrageous price the first time. I think it is interesting to see those prices, but I think a better estimate of what a set is worthy are the recently completed auctions.

I don't see how people who rip other people off like that can sleep at night.

But I guess if people are crazy enough to pay those prices, they deserve it. LOL

That's insane! I don't think it's ripping anyone off because these bidders are adults who know what they can (should) spend on a stamp set. I spend a lot of money on craft stuff, but I don't think I could justify that cost for one stamp set. And I can justify a lot to myself!

As an avid eBay shopper, it's not ripping them off. When you click on "buy it now" or "bid now", you have multiple times to change your mind or put in a lower bid. The BUYER is the one who chooses to spend that money. They do so willingly. That's not, IMHO, a rip off.

That is one smart person who has an item that isn't all that common but has found a market where people want it. Supply and Demand - Economics 101. In this case the price elasticity function is definitely in the seller's advantage, almost to the point of inelasticity. In fact, the sets are so rare that the supply line is darn close to a vertical line.

Just wish I'd found these sets.

Sometimes it's all about the "collecting" and collectors will do nutty stuff....

My dad and I collect Hallmark Christmas ornaments and we were in a club when I was young and we went to a convention a year or two. There were older ornaments for sale there and we spent hundreds on a couple of ornaments to complete our "collection". Were they really worth that? Probably not but it's what people were selling them for and we were willing and wanted them!!!! Now, I would NOT spend that for a stamp set, lol! Wish I had some of these pricey sets to sell for money for NEW stuff, hehe!

There is a seller on ebay who had Dew Drops listed with 45 in the title, and the price was BIN $25. I asked if that meant 45 bottles? No, it's just a stock number, listing is for one bottle. Checked his listings and he had many items that sell for about $5 listed for $20 & up.

Wonder WHO falls for these listings? Most of us are looking for a DEAL, not a rip off.

I understand looking for something that's discontinued and paying a premium price for it, but things that are readily available now?

I have two comments...First, remember a while back SU would re-release a set as a special promotion? well maybe if they re-released that wild west set, then SU would make money from it instead of ebay sellers

and my second comment, I was bidding on some of the older clam shell ink pads, and there was one color Luscious Lime, the inkpad and a re-inker that ended at $125!!!!! I got a box of about 30 colors for $21.

Sets that go for those kind of $$$ are typically full sets in new condition, not mounted. The price goes down a bit once they are mounted or if they have been used and show any kind of staining on the wood.

That's one of the reasons why I never unmounted my sets or split them up like so many folks seem to be doing these days.

AMEN!

A few years ago I listed a retired SU set I wanted to unload. My original listing price was 80% of the original retail price (essentially what I paid for the set as a demonstrator) As I recall, there were 2 or 3 bidders frantically out bidding each other and the set ended up selling for 4X it's original cost. How can anyone imply that I was ripping someone off? If it was you (geneic you here, not any specfic poster ), can you honestly say that you would have ended the auction early to keep the price lower? I think not!!!

If you list it on ebay without a reserve or a 'BIN" option then technically the seller isn't the one ripping people off. It's the crazies that keep bidding and causing the price to get up so high. Now those peeps that have BIN prices at $100 are off thier rockers.

I have a ton of sets I want to get rid of but I don't have the time or patience to list them on ebay. The only downside to selling them is that shipping is a beast. I think I'll price them at $3 for a small set and $5 for a medium set and maybe $7 for a large one and then $5 shipping.

Shipping costs frusterate me, specially when the seller is offering a fair price but then charging something crazy expensive in shipping costs. I recently got a great deal on a Cricut Expression. The seller was charging $30 for shipping. After the aution closed, the seller contacted me saying she would need to charge me $100 for shipping. I checked the shipping options (UPS, FedEx, USPS). We communicated back and forth several times, and 3 weeks later I received my Cricut sent UPS for $28.

IMO not if they can get the price they are asking. It's the people who pay these prices that are crazy. I just wish I could sell my stamps at those prices.

$100 for shipping? Woah, that's insane

I'd give my stamps away if I knew someone who wanted them. If I have to ship them then I would like to make at least $2 on each set

That's also known as Keyword Spamming. Which is against Ebay's selling rules.

So they could get in trouble to those listing.

Shipping costs are nuts !!

I had a notice on Buy and Sell that I wanted to buy Close To Cocoa card stock. Jaye replied she had one full pack, 16 more sheets and 10 sheets of DP.
The Postage would have been $10.45 !!

I have a postal scale and weighted the same amount of paper and that IS what is would cost.
The amazing thing is the package would only be traveling 90 miles.
I only bought some of the paper to keep the shipping cost down.

I think the shipping costs are hurting sales on the Buy & Sell threads.

The true value of something is what the market is willing to pay. It makes me mad when I see people asking for these sets for "non-crazy eBay prices" - why should people lose out?

I remember when SU did that--there had been several ebay auctions for the set with the castle and dragon in it that were crazy high! I cracked up when SU released it at about $25! I wish I had the $$ then because it was such a cute set!

There's nothing wrong with a seller asking for crazy prices, it's their right. If there's a buyer, more power to them. I just can't justify paying that kind of money for stamps. I think the most I spent on eBay for a set is $40 w/ free ship. Don't get me wrong, I'm a SU! addict, but some of the eBay prices make me chuckle. I'd rather use the money to fill my quarterly and get a lot more stuff.

I always wonder how many of those folks have second identities on eBay and bid on their own items to run the prices up higher.

Funny you should say that, Mindykid. I am brand new to ebay and I wondered that very same thing. How on earth could ebay prevent the sellers from doing that very thing?

Of course, it could come back to bite them. People may just stop bidding when it gets too crazy.

Before I read the prices at the top of the page, I thought this was alot of money for a set, but I'm not overly familiar with the Stampin Up line anymore. The "Covered Bridges" set is being auctioned off right now. It has 13 bids and it's at $42.01. How old is that set? It's really lovely.

I found the auction you're talking about - the stamp set is called Changing Seasons and it retired in 2005.

Thanks, Sara. I just checked again. The set is up to $46.01 with two hours left. I'd love to have it, but NOT at that price! I like to stay in the $20 range and that includes shipping. So, you know I don't win too often. LOL.

And, the fact that you knew the REAL name of the set which is different than what the seller is calling it, just goes to show we do need to try all different types of "keywords" when looking for something. Thanks, again.

I don't know - I don't think it would be that hard to ask demos & customers what sets they would want brought back. And then put up a poll of some kind on their website where people could vote for 5 sets or something. Work yes, difficult not really. They could then re-release the top 5 or 10 or 15 or whatever vote getting sets. At that point, they'd pretty much know even before release that there is a market for those sets.

I have only bought 2 set from e-Bay and I also set a firm limit. $20.01 if I have to pay for shipping and $25.01 if the seller pays shipping. I won't go over that price and I am prepared to lose, but I know I will eventually get the sets I want.

I wanted the SU Kimono set, but I lost out 3 times on e-Bay. I eventually found it at a garage sale for $8

Ok. The auction is over and the "Changing Seasons" [covered bridges] set went for $47.50 plus $6.50 shipping! I think the whole thing was high, but I DO AGREE that if I had the money to blow, I would spend "whatever" to get the sets I liked. Would that we all could do that!

What gets me is when current sets go for more than they cost brand new! I am watching a set that is $31 new and that is more than I want to spend...the used set that I was watching, without shipping, ended up going for $37!! Who does that?!?!?! New punches with a BIN price of $22 that cost $17 from the catalog? Why? Oooh, and when they put "Retired, RARE" on the Loads of Love set that, if it was retired at one time, it's not anymore.

I must be the only one who doesn't like the Wild Wild West stamp set. Changing Seasons is a set that I always wanted, but I never purchased.

Funny how I am with the rare sets. Some of them I had to have and then I never used them so now I've taught myself to only buy what I really want and will use.

BTW- did anyone see how much Branch Out is selling for lately? I saw one sell for just over $100.

And, I happened to see a few bat punches sell for around $30 last week and now they are on the SU clearance rack for $6.99.

They put "Retired, Rare" on items so they catch your eye. If you think you can't get Loads of Love anymore, you're going to be willing to spend more $ to get it.

I know there are sets that cause people to scramble - and it's all a matter of how much people are going to pay to get it.
