Default HELP... alcohol & rsvp pens...

I was sure I read somewhere on scs about using rubber alcohol to get the writing off the rsvp pens. You know... where it says... "pentel rsvp" on the side of the pen. I tried it, but it didn't do a thing.
Any advice???

Are you using 90% or higher alchohol? I bought it at Target, it is with the other alcohol and instead of costing about 50 cents a bottle it was around $1. You need to rub pretty hard but it will come off. HTH.

Keep rubbing! It take a bit. Also, I think I read somewhere on here that you need 90% for it to work. I think I also read that fingernail polis remover will work. I just made some pens at a workshop this afternoon (I'm a SU! demo) and they were a big hit! All I did was cut the Spash CS from the designer series and have them shove into the pen, if they wanted to rub the RSVP part off, they were able. I brought the alcohol with for them to do. It was fun, and some of the ladies got creative and stamped a bit on them.

You need to use 90% or 91% alcohol. I put some on a rag and rub. It takes a bit of rubbing but the ink does come off. If the barrel seems cloudy, just clean the whole thing with the alcohol. It works every time for me.

I hope you have better luck!

Another method to beading RSVP pens is to stamp a design on adhesive label sheets. Wrap the label around the pen. Then put the double sided adhesive strip around the label and adhere the beads. This gave my pens a much more vivid appearance and I never had to worry about getting the gold pen label off.

Just another option,

Michelle

Okay... you guys are great! The alcohol I was using was 91%. I tried it again... and rubbed like crazy and it worked. It just took a lot more rubbing than I thought it would. Guess I wasn't rubbing hard enough the first time.
Carol,
I wanted to get the printing off because you can decorate the rsvp pens by slipping a piece of designer paper or stamped paper inside the barrel. I just wanted to see the design I put inside, not the name of the pen. Also, like someone else said you can bead around the outside of the pen... in which case you wouldn't have to be concerned about the writing since it would be covered up. (On the rsvp pens you can also put microbeads in the barrel. If you only put in about 1/4 teaspoon the beads shake around and look cool.)
Thank everyone!

Default RSVP Pens

Oh, Now I understand why you are rubbing it off. I've been making those pens for two yrs. with the decoration inside and I never thought about the label on the pen. Great, Now I have to think about this one. Thanks for letting me know, Carol

I recently found out that my non-acetate nail polish remover will remove the writing too!

Sencie,

I cut the address labels 3.25 x 1.5. I just want the design and beads to cover the transparent plastic on the pens. I tried putting a stamped piece of paper inside the barrel but the plastic on the pen and the beads made the design hard to see. Putting the beads directly over the stamped address label made the pens more vibrant. Hope that helps.

Thanks Michelle!
I tried putting a piece of designer paper (one that was very dark red) in the barrel and then put beads on the outside of the pen. You're right... with the thickness of the barrel and then the beads it was hard to even see the paper! I should have left the beads off that one, as it was really cute without them... oh well... live and learn!
I'm going to try the label and then the beads like you suggested!
Thanks!

So Michelle are you using the sticky sheets for the beads or are you wrapping the entire barrel?

Hi Keri,

I first stamp a design on my self adhesive address labels that have been cut to fit over the see through barrel of the pen.

I attached the stamped label to the pen.

Then I cut a piece of double sided tape to match the same size as the label and I apply the tape over the stamped label.

Then I roll the sticky barrel into the micro beads. That's it.

I have a sample that I made for my DD. She's giving them to friends for Christmas. I'll try to post it. My scanner isn't always reliable though . It's a lexmark and was free with the purchase of our computer. I'll see if I can up load a picture.

Please let me know if these directions are confusing.

I just loaded the pen on my gallery. Sorry, but I'm clueless on how to post a picture here. Not that great with computers

Hopefully, that will help.

Default another option for beaded pens

I have been experimenting with the beaded pens! Here is an informal instruction sheet (with options):

1. a. cut an adhesive sticker sheet (white) to 3 1/4 X 1 1/4 and then stamp whatever you'd like on it OR
b. cut a piece of SU designer paper to 3 1/4 X 1 1/4 OR
c. cut a piece of copy paper to 3 1/4 X 1 1/4 then stamp

2. a. wrap the stamped adhesive sheet around the clear portion of the barrel of the pen. OR
b. using a 2 way glue pen, make the designer paper "sticky" and adhere it to the outside of the barrel of the pen OR
c. roll the designer paper/stamped copy paper and insert it in the pen. (IF USING THIS OPTION, USE 91% ALCOHOL AND RUB HARD TO GET THE RSVP LETTERS OFF OF THE PEN.)

3. Using terrifically tacky sheets (I buy at hobby lobby) cut it to 3 1/4 X 1 1/4 (use your paper cutter). Wrap exactly even with your sticker paper/designer paper only on the clear barrel portion of the pen. Do not touch the sticky part.

4. Warm the tape with your heat gun to increase adhesiveness.

5. Roll in microbeads until covered (use a SU set box or shallow tray of some kind). Then mash them into the tape. Lay flat and let "cure" overnight. Small beads work best for the pens.

You can also use the alcohol to remove the letters on the barrel of the pen and then place beads inside the barrel of the pen. I have used metallic gold beads for this and paired it with a gold embossed covered legal pad. This is another quick option!

I hope this helps someone make these fun pens! Disclaimer: I am not an "expert", but these are the methods that have worked for me.

Have fun! If you'd like to see some examples, I have some in my gallery.

Thanks for all the info Jody!!
That's a great tip about warming the adhesive with the heat gun... especially if the weather is kind of cold!
I made a couple of pens last night and can't wait to make more. I just went to pennywise to buy some different color beads. Yeah! Another package on the way!

By the way... has anyone seen copper micro beads for sale anywhere? That's one of the colors I was looking for and pennywise doesn't have them.

My advice is don't drink and write.

You know, alcohol (drink) and rsvp pens (write). I know it was a pathetic little joke. Besides, the original line is probably not a phrase one should make jokes from.

And here I thought I was suppose to be rubbing the alcohol on the pens!
I can't imagine how my rsvp pens would turn out if I was drinking while doing them! But actually... it might make the writing on the pens disappear faster if I was drinking. (Man you've got to rub hard!)
