Default Have you ever "used up" anything craft related?

I was doing some scrapping this weekend and came across some partially used packages of embellishments from many moons ago. So it got me to thinking......

Other than staples like cardstock or adhesives and such, have you ever used up the entire package of anything??? I'm not sure that I have. Even if I only have one left, I hoard it because if I use the last one, they'll be ALL GONE.

Seriously, how silly is that?!?!? I'm not even sure if I've ever used an entire roll of ribbon or an entire package of patterned paper. Certainly not embellishments.

Am I all alone in this strange habit??? Thank goodness there is no "shelf-life" for scrapping/stamping goodies.

Oh, I am so with you on that "It will all be gone" thing. But yes, I've finished off quite a few ribbons, and the Maya Road chipboard birds. And even some eyelets have needed to be replaced . I'm working hard on using up Primas at the moment.

I love to use up stuff. I used up all my kraft cardstock a while ago and it forced me to shift my stamping. eventually I bought more but I get a good feeling when my spot for something is empty. Unless it is tiny rhinestones, then I go panicky!!

I used all of my crochet trim up a week or two. I cried out like a woman in mourning. HA! DH ran to see if I was okay. It is okay. I ordered more.

See, I think it might feel good too. But I just can't get over this "what if it's gone and it would be perfect for this project?" kind of feeling. I think I need to work on realizing that there will always be something else that works for the next layout/card/project.

I think I'm going to do a mini purge and have a swap/take what you want table on Saturday and donate what's left to my LSS. They donate unwanted supplies to a woman's shelter.

I've used up lots of ribbon that I just loved...and I, too, have mourned. Most of the time I can't find it again... {sob}

And in my early days I had a supply of beautiful plaid paper (I'm a sucker for plaids) and rationed that out VERY carefully...but it is gone now...

It's like the boots I'm wearing today...scuffed and worn, but I love them. Wish with all my heart I'd bought two additional pairs. (Hmmm...maybe that's why I double-buy on craft stuff!!)

I can so relate to everyone's feelings about this. It makes absolutely no sense, but a lot of us seem to "save" special papercraft supplies that we love.

I talk to myself constantly about it. "You bought this to use on your cards. Use it, you silly person! It does no good sitting in a box or on a shelf."

Here is a quote from the wonderful Erma Bombeck when she was ill with cancer. It always reminds me to get on with my life and stop saving things:

If I Had to Live My Life Over:

“… I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it melted in storage. I would have talked less and listened more. I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained, or the sofa faded. I would have eaten the popcorn in the ‘good’ living room and worried much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the fireplace. … I would have sat on the lawn with my kids, even if it meant grass stains.”

Well, it's craft-related, but not papercrafts-related - I was really into thread crochet tree ornaments a while back, and I remember the incredible feeling of accomplishment when I used up my first ball of white crochet cotton. Because using it up translated directly to a huge pile of snowflakes and other ornaments!

I can relate to the "but then it'll be GONE!" feeling.

But I've used up packages of brads (pretty easily replaceable) and a roll of Soft Sky ribbon (which was OK because I had another roll - which I still use sparingly, LOL).

I have one roll of ribbon that is really beautiful (at least I think so) and I'm affraid to start using it because I haven't seen it anywhere again. So if I use it up, I can't replace it. I keep telling myself I'm being stupid, but it still sits in the container waiting the that "extra special project for someone worthy of it".

I have used up some craft items. I do get a mini panic attack when it happens but I force myself to move on.

I try not to hoard embellishments, but the thought of running out is always on my mind. Silly things like..."I can't get it locally.", "I'll have pay a lot of shipping if I need to reorder that ONE thing.", etc.

I decided to put all of my packages of pretties on binder rings hanging in my craft room. I look at them more often and am beginning to pop things off and put them on projects. Sometimes seeing them a lot reminds me wny I bought them. They look prettier on a project than in a drawer or basket.

With that said...I have used up some Prima flower packs, crocheted lace, pearls, rhinestones, linen thread, baker's twine, ruffled ribbon...

Yes, I used a whole pack of spring rain buttons. I used up tons of rhinestone packs. Completely used up several bottles of stickles. Magnetic closures from basic grey.

Designer paper! I have been making cards for 6 years and finally used up one whole pack! Any why do I buy another pack before it retires (SU) when I have barely dipped into the first pack just because it matches a stamp set and it just sits there!

I was like that for a long time, because I could only get stuff at my LSS which was extremely expensive - then they went out of business and I thought - what if? lol.

Or I would buy something at the Craft Fair and even if there was another one next year, I might not be able to afford to go.

But one day I was making some bulk cards for my grandsons and needed little half pearls just to make them nice - and ran out!!! I went to a couple of just craft/art stores - and these places had taken up slack with scrap booking and cardmaking stuff - at much lower prices. I was so excited. I could buy enough stuff to never run out again. lol.

The other one was "Oh, they were so expensive ...".

I used to hoard until last year and since I quit I've been using up a lot of things and it feels wonderful. I was saving for the special project or like Karen ""Oh, they were so expensive ..." but no more.

I feel good because it's no more "money sitting on the shelf", I'm not hoarding, and the best is I don't feel guilty if I buy something new. Ii only have a couple items that I wish I still had but I just find something else in my stamproom (i.e. the store).

I don't hoard, but if it looks like I'll run out of something I use frequently, I'll reorder.

Although, not that long ago, amazingly enough, I ran out of -- of all things -- white cardstock and dimensional foam stickers!!! Whaatt!?! Ya think I would've noticed they were getting low, eh?!

I too can relate to "saving things for the special occasion" and not wanting to use something I think is special. I am getting better at it though. One thing that helped me was a sermon our priest gave and the main point I remember about it that "Every day is a special occasion". I often remind myself of this and have starting using my crystal every day etc. etc. Who knows if I don't use it today I may never get to use it. As far as the craft supplies go I also think it will give me another chance to go shopping for more if I use it up now. No matter how special it is there is always something else just as special out there!

I use up a lot of ribbon and embellishments but a good portion of that is for my classes/clubs. I do tend to use up a lot of ribbon for my 80+ Christmas cards every year so that's always satisfying! I am trying to make a better effort to use up my retired embellishments since I can't demo with them. I have I think once, used up a whole pack of DSP with the exception of little tiny scraps that were even too small to use on a card!

I used to be like you too but there are always new things coming out. As the Chinese saying goes, old ones don't go new ones don't come. So use it up and get new ones, doesn't have to be the exact same thing.

Nothing really except SU Whisper White CS and I just ran out of Very Vanilla this morning!
I've also ran out of the silver brads I buy @ Michael's.

I always think, "It will take ten years to use up that tiny container of white embossing powder." I still have half of it after about four years of use!

I've used up ribbon making Christmas cards.

I just used up the last of my Basic Grey Magnetic snaps and now I will have to order more! I bought like 10 packages of them a couple of years ago and finally ran out!

I use up an entire SU! Pretties kit on swap for convention.

I also eat on my grandmothers good china regularly and give perfectly great stuff away on Freecycle too. Oprah taught me that.

I'm trying to tell myself it is okay to use up whatever I have whether or not it is something I can replace. There are items that I know are now discontinued/retired but I'm trying to use them as it is doing no one any good sitting in my craft room.

Even though I have enough ribbon to wrap the moon like a cosmic Christmas gift from God, I am so cautious when I pull some out for a card. Same with twine.

I see these tutorial videos where the person keeps the ribbon on the roll and just says something like, "Okay... so grab your ribbon and wrap it around your card like..." and she proceeds to just WRAP her ribbon around the card front as if it's just .... well, just ribbon!

Then she makes her bow or whatever it is she's doing so crazily haphazardly with it and she has a lot extra (like three or four inches!) and just cuts it off. Now, granted... she may stash it somewhere or she may just toss it.

Me? I bring my card up to my ribbon spool on the wall. I pull out the ribbon to JUST measure it about 1/2" longer than the card I'm decorating. (You know... about 1/4" on each side to tape in back? ) and cut.

I act like I can't buy more ribbon.

You'd think I was raised in the 20s and had to go to breadlines before I went to school!

Gah!

My list is all consumables:

Paper: I buy white and cream cardstock by the ream, and I'm on my second ream of white. I've used up several packs of Night of Navy, and my only pack of Going Grey and Snowflake vellum (neither can be replaced). I've had to restock my Stardream paper and now I buy it in larger quantities. I'm on my second large box of white envelopes.

I've also used up several jars of certain embossing powders.

Twine. I've had to replace my natural-color twine several times.

Basic silver brads. I was a major brad addict for a long time.

And, of course, lots and lots of adhesives, stamp cleaner, and gamsol.

Glad to know I'm not alone, Linda!

And glad to know there's hope for me. I think I need to do that as well... I mean, I can't take all my supplies with me when I go to the big craft room in the sky!

(I often imagine heaven to be a huge place where I can craft for the LORD and never worry about "Is my ink pad running dry?" or "I think messed up on this embossing." Perfect crafting - what a concept!)

Hi, my name is Elizabeth and I am a paper hoarder. I am afraid to use my beautiful Designer Papers that I have had for almost a millenium, because I may not be able to find it again. Never mind the fact that I could find even more beautiful papers on a daily basis at my LSS, or the fact that the papers I bought said millenium ago are now quite outdated and I'm not sure if I still like it....But I must keep it and not use it because I may not be able to find it again....

Hi, my name is Elizabeth and I am a paper hoarder.......sigh.

One indicator of this is how much scotch tape you use to wrap a gift. My dad taught me to use the tiniest sliver possible, and I cringe when I see people use a full inch at a time.

Maybe I need counseling, too.

Hi, my name is Elizabeth and I am a paper hoarder.......sigh.
I have a shirt that says Paper Ho...do I need to get one for you, too?! I love that shirt, but you know, can't really wear it in mixed company! LOL

We just had a challenge at Use It Tuesday that MADE you cut into the paper. Yes, you had to slaughter it!! I know. I could hardly breathe myself...but amazing the gorgeous creations you can make when you actually USE IT!

I am DONE HOARDING. DONE. I am going to find satisfaction when I use something up. Who is with me?

What a timely thread---

I was making my April cards for my card exchange group at church. I USED UP 1 PACKET OF EYLETS!!--only a zillion more packets/cards of embellies to go!

Funny how we buy and hoard. When we come upon (uncover) that 'perfect' paper again we wonder 'what was I thinking of using this --- paper for?' LOL Have done this fabric also.

Gah!
Ted thats so funny, I'm the same way. I think oh my look at all that waste. I cut first and they put on my card. I think I just about have it down on how much if I tie a bow but I don't do that often because I can't tie them very good. I do know for sure when I tie a knot and I like it when I don't have to cut of much to trim the edges.
