I do the same - usually make cards a specific person and purpose. But I do make extra backgrounds (alcohol inks, watercolors, Oxides).

Some are ugly but often there are parts that are neat so I cut those out because maybe they’ll grow up to be die cuts one day. Sometimes I use a little viewfinder to locate the neat parts: like a little piece of cardstock with a small rectangle cut out. It’s moved over the ugly background to find the un-ugly.

Or sometimes a background looks blah but cut into strips with some “air” in between on a base, it goes from blah to ahh.
