Once, when I lost an earring, my mother suggested stretching a stocking over the end of my vacuum hose, secure it with a rubber band, and then vacuum the floor with the hose. It worked! The stocking caught the earring before it could be sucked up by the vacuum! You might give that a try to find your die.

It is interesting how we do find things when we least expect it.  Thinking of my jade pendant lost many years ago.  We really thought we'd find it when we moved...nope. Gone.Forever. Sad.
Oh, I can relate! The frustrations of dealing with small things that become moving parts! I had a foot for my sewing machine go missing for more than a year. If you think dies are expensive feet for Bernini sewing machines have them beat hands down. I just have lots of stuff! That's sort of my major frustration with stamping, trying to find a place to store all this stuff and still have it accessible!

I am sorry to hear it is still being a stinker and hiding.

I dont see in your original post and dont remember someone asking. Do you have pets? You might look in their bed/hangout or around it. I have heard many a jigsaw puzzle piece has gone riding on the back of a cat...

I moved my trash can away from the desk too. I cant put it under so it's behind me now.

I like that stocking/vac idea.

I know this sounds crazy...however you store the dies...have you looked between/behind layers like if you have CS in a pocket or something?

David Brenner, comic :
Why do we always say "I know it will be in the last place I look?" ....
Because who keeps looking after you have found it?

Yes, reading through this thread, while filled with helpful tips and ideas, also let me know that I'm not the only one who has obsessed about a lost craft item. Breaking up a set just drives me insane, even though I know it's not important at all in the grand scheme of things.

I once lost a capital letter E from an alphabet stamp set, so had to get creative by using the capital letter L and adding two horizontal lines. If it had been the lower case e, then I would have added that little line to a letter c. Dies, on the other hand are much harder to substitute.

It amazes me how something will get mentioned here, and then it turns out to be so "timely", because it happens with me, or I need to know it also.  I lost one of my little dies in a set while I was working on challenges.  Well, I had things piled all over my working table, so I thought' Oh, it's probably in there somewhere.  Well, someone must have mentioned here not to throw out the trash until you find it, so I did not throw out the trash in my trash basket in my craft room.  And you guessed it, after cleaning off my table and not finding it, I found it after going through the trash can.  It was at the very bottom among a ton of glitter.  It was a little thing, and I am so happy that I found it.  What a blessing!  God works in mysterious ways; must have had me read this thread, so you all could be a blessing to me!  Thanks for being so helpful and coming up with the answer once again!

I don’t need to shop for one, I just have to sneak it away from my hubby’s workbench in the garage

OH MY I thought I was the only one that sneaks tools off of hubbies work bench in the garage, I don't think he uses them much because he's never said he couldn't find something, so far I have his Magnetic Pick Up Tool, his leveler (yup hanging pictures in my craft room and need one) I have his tiny screwdriver and my best find out there was a tiny metal sniper for cutting my dies apart.  I figure when he needs them and complains he can't find them I'll confess. OH MY GOSH HOW TRUE HOW TRUE, it's  happened more than once to me the only good thing that comes out of that happening is I always give the duplicates to my daughter who is also a stamper. She's the one that got me started, she offers to pay but I've gotten so much out of this hobby I tell her it's my way of paying her back for introducing me to stamping etc.  By the way I saw a tip to get a small magnetic bowl to keep those tiny dies in while I'm working and also if you loose one to pass it over the area and sure enough it really worked. So thank you to whoever posted that tip I'm sorry I lost your name.  Magee

I apparently lost a rectangle stitched die, I found it three feet away from my desk in a box holding some plastic bags headed for recycling. I do have and use a magnetic bowl and I do have and use the telescoping magnet, my very bad habit is starting with a clean desk then not putting things away as I use them, pushing it aside until I have a small clear area. I had used the rectangle dies but used some, changed sizes and obviously did not put back on the magnetic sheet. Luckily I found it! Time to clean my room again. Abbysgramma did your die show up yet?

I just thought I would let you all know I still have not found that die leaf I lost the end of Aug.  I haven't given up hope but it going to take a miracle I think to find it.

Abbysgrammy - I thought about you and this post when I dropped a little heart die from the first set I’ve ever purchased. It landed in the garbage can. I had to empty almost everything Thankfully, there was nothing yucky. I did find it stuck to a piece of tape.

Haven't read through this whole thread, but I have one way that will 100% guarantee (for me, at least) that you will find you missing stamp or die. Just order another set. Like magic, the missing piece will pop up immediately after you've paid for and/or received the replacement set you ordered. Every single time. rofl Doesn't matter how long you waited to order the replacement, either.

I also picked up a magnet sheet, I use the magnet vent covers from
Lowes. You get three 8 x 15 magnet sheets, you can cut them to what ever
size you need & they are a great deal. I have one on my craft bench
& put the dies I'm working on there so that they don't get lost.

SMarlowe, that's a great idea (magnetic sheet on your work space)!  Sadly for Abbysgramma, this one wanted to be a bird and flew off somewhere while she was cutting a new set apart.

Yeah, had that happen before I put the magnet sheet down but luckily I found it by accident, but found it.

The original question was about how to find a lost die and that's sure a good question, and plenty of us have been there.  If we're also talking about how to avoid losing dies when cutting them apart, my strategy is to do the job into a largish deepish clean trash container.  That way I catch all the dies but also catch those nasty pieces between the dies.

I have the opposite problem.  I found a die and I for the life of me can't figure out where it goes!

Ladies after all this time I FOUND IT!!!!!  I just dropped an ink pen an moved a iris cart that I have moved several times to get it and it was laying right there on the floor by my pen.  I have swept under there several times an it wasn't there.  I must have a craft room gnome playing tricks on me.  I am so happy to have it back.  Just had to let you all know.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who keeps checking this thread to see if you found that lost die...yay!!! You obviously struck a chord with a lot of us, because I think there are quite a few happy forum members reading this.
