I do not use my SU black either. I prefer CTMH black or Staz-on.

Don't throw it away. If you lift some off with a watercolor brush, you can do some nice shading (with a lot of water).

This is all I use mine for anymore. I always use my Palette or Staz-On now. And yes the black does have a purple tint to it

Well if I want a nice dark purple ink, I know where to go!

Seriously, since I started with this hobby I'm convinced pretty much anything can be re-purposed, you may just need to tweak your thinking

Default Su Black

I thought it was just because my pad is old. First SU product I purchased many years ago. So its not only mine. I do like the Versafine and Stazon so will use them for things I want really black.

So, since this complaint has fallen on deaf ears with SU, did they ever give any kind of an explanation as to why it is this way?

You know, I've never said anything to anyone at SU! so maybe that's the problem!

Silly me, I just changed ink's. But I still need a different type of ink for my copics, so I dont think it would matter too much to me.

I did.

And all I got was the standard "thanks for your concern, we'll look into it, blah blah blah."

Staz On or Pallette Noir for me too. SU Black just plain sucks because of the purplish tint to it. Perhaps some day they fill fix it? I guess I can hope.

I had been having tons of problems with my SU! Classic Black. I could never get a good image out of the ink. After trying my Palette pad and Staz on pads I was so much happier with the results. If I hadn't started demo'ing for TAC I wouldn't have tried the palette pad. I'm so glad I have it now.

I've pointed it out to people that the black looks purple. I'm so glad I'm not the only one that sees it!

I tried SU black with clear stamps and it's awful. I mostly use VersaFine black for rubber stamps but I used Memories (from JoAnn's) with the $1 clear stamps and it works really well. Palette noir is next on my list to buy. My SU classic black is nearly new and isn't juicy at all - it's really difficult to get a good image. Oh well. At least there are alternatives!

This is such a good thread. I recently stopped stamping for over a year and moved during that time. When I went to start stamping again a few months ago I noticed that the ink that was on the lid of my Basic Black stamp pad was all funky colored (read purplish). I didn't know what had happened as all my inks were together and only that one was really messed up. It seems to even stamp different than what I remembered from before.

Thanks for clearing up this issue. I'm pretty sure I have a Stazon pad so I'll give that a try.

First, I am glad for this thread because I always saw the purple too, and never talked about it. I just figured it couldn't be helped. lol I also have become increasingly frustrated with it over the last few years because it seems to run more and more all the time, and it drives me BATTY!!

Anyway, I have and use StazOn, but of course those inkpads dry out quickly so I try to hold out as much as possible, but I'm getting ready to go all Staz-On black... and now I read this thread about Pallette Noir.

I have never tried Pallette Noir, so I have a few questions for those that love it so much:

1. How does it perform when coloring in images with say, a blender pen? Does the black run?

2. Does the inkpad dry out quickly like Staz On?

3. What kind of ink is it - Alcohol, Pigment, Dye?

4. What is the price like for this product?

THanks so much in advance for your help!!

I personally have issue with all SU ink. (no flames please) I find that I cannot get a crisp image with it - something is with the texture.

I think I will search the boards to find if there are any pointers about how to use it better.

1. In another thread someone very kindly did a test using different ink pads & markers. The Pallette Noir did extremely well, in fact better than the others.
2. I have no idea whether it dries out quickly.
3. I believe it's like Brilliance, it's a cross between pigment and dye.
4. It's a little pricey, but not too bad. I think around $7.99 or $8.99.

Now I know I'm not the only one with purple black ink. My pad is mostly all purple around the edges of the case. I also thought it was probably because it was getting old. I use stazon for a lot of things. Maybe some day they will decide to change it. Thanks for all the info.

I didn't realize how purple my basic black was until I got my vintage violet last year and I thought it looked black. But that wasn't true, it was the other way around. And it's annoying that SU claims that it is waterproof... It soooo is NOT waterproof... on any cardstock I've tried.

The Palette Noir ink pad sells for $6.00 in the TAC catalog and I have found that it stays juicy for quite a long time. They call it a "hybrid" ink, with the benefits of both pigment and dye inks. It has worked great for me with any coloring technique I have tried. HTH

i've been trying to tell my sister that the SU black is kind of purple and she has always disagreed! i did buy some reinker though and reinked my pad and now it is black.

has anyone else tried the reinker or just gave up on the basic black?

i also own versafine and like using that as well.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! This is extremely helpful!! One last question - if it's a hybrid ink, does this mean that you can emboss with it as well?

For anyone that ever had the hybrid chalk inks from SU! when they were offered, is this the consistency of this Pallette Noir pad?

I don't use my Classic Black either - it looks like a deep purple to me! I absolutely love my Palette Noir ink and use it all the time - works great with watercoloring and my copics

Yes, you can emboss with it. Actually, you can emboss with dye ink too. It just gives you a more subtle look & you have to work pretty fast.
I don't think any chalk ink would be like the Pallette Noir. I love chalk inks, especially Color Box, but it's a whole different look. HTH

Funny! I love the smell of my black Stazon. Kind of an anise smell. I always take a little sniff when I open the pad.

I stopped using mine a long time ago and have found that Basic Gray is a wonderful substitute. It is indeed a light black and when I'm coloring I don't always want the lines to be quite so bold so I have found this a perfect solution.
