The Splitcoast team is curious about your predictions for what the big papercrafting trends will be for 2011!

Did you know ahead of time that owls would be hot? Had the jump on buttons and sewing themed stamps? Bought seam binding before seam binding was cool?

Since we're only a few days in, let's see who will predict this year's hot styles and trends for 2011!

I think we'll see a repeat of the trends of 2005/2006. A return to whimsical line images, paper tearing, colored pencil/watercolor pencil coloring, and more country kraft elements (jute twine, raffia, etc).

I'm starting to see and thinking there will be more:
tags
silhouette images
matching image/die combos
brighter bolder color (instead of dark or pastel)

Bicycles and typewriters. Love the typewriter trend even if I haven't got any yet apart from Snoopy - I learned touch-typing in my teens.
I'm useless when it comes to colour trends .

I have no real basis for suggesting this, but perhaps we will see more "green" craft products (i.e. recycled paper content, hemp, etc.)?

Anything sewing or needle art related seems to be hot right now. This really started in 2010, but I see it continuing into 2011.

Was just in Target and saw some dishes with gears and stuff like that. Steampunk stuff will probably be hot this year.

I was thinking this as well. And mustaches are all over etsy, I'm not really sure how that'd hit paper crafting but thought I'd mention it.

yes, dies are definitely making a big comeback! For a while, everything was Cricut and other electronic cutting - I'm seeing more companies doing manual dies again.

That darned crystal ball gets a little cloudy, but I could see Victorian and Heritage style products making it big this year.
Fabric and lace may be coming out of the sewing chest and making it into our paper crafting more than before.

Maybe mine are more wishful thinking

Collage
Scenes (Stampscape, Art Impressions, etc.)
Watercoloring
Jewel tones - dark and rich colors
Natural fibers and colors - think mother earth
Basic stamping - not so much done with electronic media and tools

Here's what my Crystal ball says -
I see less vintage and more retro - think '50s.
Lots of textures.
Repurposeing ("findings" like hardware or sewing notions)
Going Green.
Using more art mediums, like Gesso
More sewing, both machine and hand embroidery

Fun thread - we should revisit it at the end of 2011 and see how we did.

  • Colors: Maybe seafoam green?
  • Color combo: Ivory and burgundy
  • Even more beautiful journaling boxes
  • Net or mesh or textured ribbons
  • Embroidery

Tea! I have always loved teapot, tea set, any tea-themed stamps, and used to have to really search to find them. Now just about every company has a new set out or about to be released.

It's a particular style and sub-genre of science fiction - think League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
It combines Victorian era items with mechanical items like clocks and gears. Hot air balloons are also a popular feature. If you look it up on wikipedia, it has a good article about it.

stuff i think we'll see a lot of this year:
steampunk
lace/fabric on cards
owls -- i think they're not ready to go away yet!
more and more ways to make flowers

stuff i wish we'd be done with:
birdcages
cards with 10+ layers, ribbon, flowers, etc.etc.
hearts (ok i know they will be around forever, i just think we have enough already)

stuff i'd love to see more of:
giraffes
retro/ 40s and 50s
simple cards
"green" products

- more vintage
- lots of layers with mixed textures - metals, fabrics, stitched papers, ribbons, glass beads
- richer colors that are slightly muted
- more die cuts and less machine produced embellishments

Well here's my prediction. I love scanning all the stamping/card making magazines and I'm starting to see many samples/articles on hand made flowers, color resist which utilizes wet embossing and a brayer, steampunk or grunge, combo of embossing folders with stamping, and shadow stamping.

The color gray is becoming the in-vogue neutral.

More of a wish than a prediction: More stamping and less electronic paper piecing, less DP layer on layer, and less outline stamps that only look good when intricately colored, less cutsie, more elegant.

Emerging/strengthening:
- Silhouettes, cameos and doilies
- Green craft (recycling) and natural touches (dried flowers, leaves, jute)
- Zig zags as design elements, background papers or stamps (ethnic yet urban and modern)
- Minimalist, clean and simple, angular thin frames
- Paper cones (Victorian and modern)
- Honeysuckle pink, aqua, turquoise

Staying strong:
- Steampunk
- Retro 50s vibe
- Cards that have unique folds (tri-shutter)
- Stand up cards (easel)
- Stamps that match dies

Here forever:
- Ribbons, lace and buttons
- Butterflies and flowers
- Vintage (but more vibrant and less brown)
- Glitter

What Id like to see:
- Clear stamps that smell like chocolate
- Sentiments from groups instead of an individual (We love you; we will miss you; were proud of you, etc.)
- Netflix for stamps!

Default Post- consumer recycled cardstock

I'm hoping for cardstock with high post - consumer content. Actually, I'm interested in any new products produced in an environmentally conscious manner using biodegradable materials.

Hope this is true. I totally love grey! I have both SU's (one retired) and 2 from CTMH as well a 3-4 random others. It goes with so much, so well.

I think bold contrasting colors with rich tones will be big this year. Fabrics and textures with sewing and embroidery also.
I like vintage and retro, along with steampunk. I am liking the green trend with up-cycling products for projects! Altered art will make headway!
