Default Flag issues with courage...

I'm just now cruising through the new catty and found Courage. I love the set but want to know what's up with the smaller flag? It looks like a patch on his shoulder. It bugs me that the field is on the right side. There's no way the field would be on the right side as you're looking at the patch as it is being worn. Am I seeing this wrong?

The flag is a patch on his shoulder. And it is my understanding that the flag is always worn with the stars facing the front, the soldier moving forward with the flag flowing behind him. Otherwise, it looks like the soldier is in retreat mode and that's a bad thing!
Does that make sense? When the flag is worn it should always look as if the soldier is moving forward with the flag flowing behind.

It is correct the way it is shown. Here is an explanation from the DOD:

Following is a quote from the Department of Defense website...

"Thank you for your inquiry about the proper placement of the American flag on the uniform of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Army Regulation 670-1, “Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia,” updated most recently September 5, 2003, addresses explicitly the proper and lawful placement of the U.S. flag patch on the Army uniform.

The regulation states that when authorized for application to the proper uniform the American flag patch is to be worn, right or left shoulder, so that “the star field faces forward, or to the flag’s own right. When worn in this manner, the flag is facing to the observer’s right, and gives the effect of the flag flying in the breeze as the wearer moves forward. The appropriate replica for the right shoulder sleeve is identified as the ‘reverse side flag’.”

We appreciate and share your concern for the respectful display of our American flag on the uniform of the U.S. Armed Forces."

For more information on Army Regulation 670-1 please visit the following web site, http://www.usapa.army.mil/pdffiles/r670_1.pdf

Hope that helps!

You learn something new every day! That flag had been bugging me since I got my catalog. Glad to see the explanation of why it faces the way it does. Thanks!

And I thought I was the last person to know this... You will also see the flag in black & white on some active uniforms too.

Would have been nice if the home office would have commented on that in the catalog or at least on the SU web site- It bugged me too, and that kept me from ordering it. I feel kinda ignorant about it now...LOL! Thank you for clearing that up.
