I have decided to give it a whirl and buy some unmounted stamps and mount them as cling stamps. I went to Frantic Stampers and they sell 1/8 thick and 1/16th thick.
Could someone advise which one I would use? Thank you so much.
I don't think I have ever used 1/16th thickness, that seems pretty thin. I buy mine from Stampers Best. It is great quality and alot less expensive. Once you start unmounting, you can't stop! lol.

Just to try before you buy, you can put some Aileens tack it over and over or mono-multi directly on the back of the rubber and let dry overnight, then it will be semi-sticky for an acrylic block. It stamps very well on the back of a squishy mouse pad.
If you use this method, just use an ity bit of the glue.
The 1/16 thickness was originally meant as a way to add cling to stamps that already had cushion - like SU! stamps that you took off the wood, or if (like me) you never mounted them on the wood.
Thing is, that still made the stamps too darn cushiony, in my opinion. It's cheaper to use two-way glue if you have intact cushion.
That being said, the 1/16 thickness works better than the 1/8" thickness for small or narrow stamps. I've ordered some stamps from CC Designs, and everything I've gotten from them is on the 1/16" and they all work great. They do have a different feel to them, though. Also, the 1/16" is black, where the 1/8" is grey. If you were thinking you wanted to index the stamps at all (some stampers use staz-on ink to stamp the image on the cling side of the cushion), you can't really make that work on the 1/16" black cushion.
Since you are using it to add cling to bare rubber, and it sounds like you are used to using regular wood-mounted stamps with cushion, I'd go with the 1/8".
I have some smaller stamps...actually things like flower stems...that I put on 1/8 and am thinking I need to get 1/16 to put them on because the thicker "cushion-iness" gives me too much rock in my stamping. I get lines around the image even when really closely trimmed. So that's the next purchase for me. My itsy-bitsy sentiments will also go on 1/16.
Don't mean to hijack this thread but have a question about the backing that clings to the acrylic block. Is it okay to use a fine Line Sharpie to label the stamp? I have some that I keep putting back in the packaging because I want to know the stamp but would like to reduce storage space and store the stamps on those cling pages you keep in a binder.

Yes. I have some alphabets that I have labelled the EZ Mount back with the letter (easier to see if the word is spelled correctly thru the clear block) and it doesn't affect the cling, and I have some that were indexed by the previous owner by stamping in Staz-On and those are fine as well. Myself, i wouldn't use the Staz-On method with a solid stamp and I wouldn't color the whole back with Sharpie, but that's not what you're planning on doing, so you should be fine.
Absolutely LOVE the Thin mount! 1/8" makes smaller, or thin long stamps TOO TALL and Unstable.
Also, Takes almost TWICE the storage space. I have TONs of stamps!
After I fill up a storage board, I ink all the stamps, and stamp an index page to attach to the back of the storage board. Fit both in an 8.5x11 page sleeve, and stand up in a basket - NOT in a notebook.
