Default envelope size for homemade cards

I recently started making my own card bases and now need to buy just envelopes. I have no idea what size I am looking for
I am cutting 8.5 x 11 in half..I think thats pretty standard

Do you make your own envelopes or can they be bought in bulk somewhere?>
\Thanks in advance!

half of a standard sheet is a standard A2 envelope. You can purchase these at an office supply store or from Stampin Up or even a lot of stamping web site.

sorry...I forgot to share that I've purchased mine off of eBay. Just do a search for "A2 envelope".

it's also known as an invitation envelope.

oh, and the envelope size is probably going to be around 4.5 by 5.75, to fit a 4.25 by 5.5 card.

I bought a box last week from Walmart (Embassy brand white invitation envelopes) and didn't realize until I got them home that the company changed the size!

The new "invitation" envelopes were 4 3/4 by 6 1/2 so they would fit a standard 4x6 photo, but were way too big for my A2 sized cards. I was so mad because now I can't get the right size at our local WalMart anymore.

I did find a good buy on the A2 size envelopes at Office Depot which was even better than the WalMart price so now I can either order them online or travel 30 miles to the nearest Office Depot store to get them.

Oh the joys of living in rural America!

Thanks for the great information, I always make my cards the A2 size and had been buying envelopes at Wal-mart. For my Christmas cards I bought two boxes and got them home THEN noticed the new size! And the cards were made, my DH couldn't see the problem but it sure bothered me.
Will check out these other places for envelopes, I had priced them at Staples they were 11.99 for 100, which was more than I had been paying a Wal-mart.

I use the SU envelopes because I like their quality so much better than what you get elsewhere. I just feel that if I've put in the effort to make a hand-stamped card, I want the envelope to be comparable. I usually use the whisper white or very vanilla, depending on which works better with the card, and then either do a little stamping on the outside of the envelope and/or put a piece of designer paper (because it's thinner than cardstock) in it as a liner...gives a beautiful, finished designer look.

A group of us like to get the sample books from wallpaper/paint store when they become obsolete. They are free and with the right template make beautiful envelopes by theme or on their own. I even use the empty, large book that the samples are cut from and which has a handle for a lap-desk. I glued bottle caps to the inside to hold the front cover even. Fun, fun. Let us know how you do with the envelopes of whatever sort you find right for you. redanneinfla.
