Default Embossing Buddy worth the $$?

Just wondering if I should order one...I've been using the "dryer sheet' method (learned here on SCS) but I got pretty frustrated today when it just wasn't working very well - little bits of ep all over my cardfronts. Is there a particular brand of dryer sheets that works better? Or am I better off buying an Embossing Buddy (even though I'd rather spend my $$ on stamps!!!!). I should mention that a few years ago I picked up the a competitor's version of the Embossing Buddy (cheap, at Michael's) and I hated it - it left a residue over everything, discoloring the darker colored cardstock I'd used it on. This has soured me towards purchasing Stampin' Up's version, so I'd like to know if it's worth the investment or not. Please comment... Linda

I have wondered this too... I am also one who would rather spend the money on stamps, but since I am embossing my Christmas cards this year, I was wondering about that...

Thanks for the answers!

I like the SU one better than the cheapy I got at the LSS. It doesnt leave the weird residue that my cheap one did.

Yes, definitely worth having. Really helps when embossing, lasts a long, long time. If you get a haze on your colored cardstock, after your embossed image cools, just lightly buff the paper with a Swiffer cloth.

It does work!! I did a swap one time with some embossing. In the process of my mass production, I forgot to use "my buddy" on one of the cards. And there were tiny spots of black embossing powder that remained on areas that I didn't want. So, it's definitely worth buying.

Thanks so much for your answers and tips - I've added it to my list of "must haves" and will include it in my next order. And now that I read on another thread that it also works for prepping a cardfront for glittering, sounds like a good investment.

I wondered about the answer to that very question. Thanks for the info.
It's on my list.

I've heard of people on here saying you can make your own from cornstarch, etc. But honestly, for only $4.50, you can't go wrong. It cuts down on static in shaker cards if you rub it across the window sheet before you put the fillers in the card. It also gets rid of fingerprints on glossy paper so you don't accidentally emboss them.

The embossing buddy sure confuses me! I have stamped for 18 years, embossing A LOT, and have never needed one. After blowing my cardstock, if anything is left (which is seldom) I just use my small brush and wisk it away. Maybe my climate in Oregon is damp enough that static just isn't much of an issue!!

I hesitated at first, but ordered one many years ago from SU. I love it. I was so mad at the little flecks. I also use mine on window sheets when doing shaker cards to keep everything from sticking to the plastic. You won't be sorry (at least I hope not!)

I LOVE my embossing buddy. Yes, you probably can make one, but considering the time it would take for me to get the stuff together and make it, I think the small cost is well worth it.

If you're still having problems after getting a buddy, it might be your embossing powders. This might come as a big "duh" moment to demonstrators, but I had problems with lots of other embossing powders - mostly the ones that I bought cheaply at a big box store. Since they were colors like black and gold, I figured that I didn't need to invest in the more expensive SU! ones. WRONG! The cheap powders seem to have lots of dust in them, and no matter what I did (including try to brush it off), it would always seem to stick to the paper and leave a residue of embossed powder that wasn't quite embossed, but not clean paper, either.

I'm a pretty big skeptic when it comes to "you must use these powders - they're better" or the "SU! scissors really cut rubber like butter" but I have become a believer. If you're really looking for the *best* stamping stuff in one place, trust SU! to find it for you.

Now, there are other companies who make fine stuff and other embossing powders out there that work great (Ranger products come to mind for inks and powder), but beware of the cheap stuff. In the end, it might not be worth it!

I will second that! I was using cheap EP and getting frustrated with all the little stray speckles even with using a embossing buddy. Tried the SU! EP and no more strays!

Another case where SU! sells awesome products!

Default Michael's

I picked up the Michael's version with a 40% off coupon about 3 years back. It still works just fine. I've never had a problem with it leaving residue. I don't know the difference between what Michael's has and what SU has but whichever one you get, it's definitely worth the price! It's a definite must have for stampers!

Christine

I had this exact problem with the SU! one. I purchased it in 2002 maybe? Perhaps they are better now? I really don't know. What I DO know however is that the one I had was sold on ebay and I will never purchase another! I just use a small paint brush to get rid of the extra ep and that works like a charm.
