The minute I get a new stamp, die, embossing folder or piece of equipment I have to rip open the package and try it immediately to see what it looks like on paper. Then I put the sample with the die, embossing folder, etc. I keep a package of cheap cardstock to use for for my practicing .Do others do this or wait until you need it for a project?
It depends on my mood. I got my cuttlebug and used it right away, but things like nesties, I wait until I can find the right image for the shape. Or when I got flower soft, just had to have it, but didnt use it until almost a year later. Stamps...I have stamps, some a year old that I have not used yet, but I am getting to it. No more spending until I use every stamp.

When I get a new stamp I have to stamp it right away to see how it looks on paper . When I got geometric shape Nesties I had to try some to them, but I didn't cut every size. The two frameabilities were cut/ embossed the minute they arrived LOL
I really don't try out my Nesties right away on my CB. I do like to test the borders - usually find some complementing cardstock (yes, the good stuff) and run a bunch of the A2 folders and borders so I can slap it all together. I go in stages, sometimes I do a bunch of Nesties, then borders, then stamp, and color multiples of the same image. I don't like coloring on the cheap cardstock from M's, with the texture of the paper, it sucks up alot of ink and the color looks nothing like it does on the good stuff.

I try to use it really quick, but usually only on a project. It's sorta lame of me though because I tend to only use new stuff on my projects, I have awesome stuff that I'm not using because it's not fresh to me anymore. I need to stop buying *shudder* and revisit some old favorites.
I mean later... I just did another SU order so not now, let's not be crazy ok.

I've been known to snatch a package of new product right out of the UPS driver's hands, run back to my stampin' room and tear open the box in under 30 seconds....LOL
Yes, there are stampers JUST LIKE YOU! *insert grin here!
I still have SU new 09-10 in-color ribbon that I got back when it first came out. I think I've used an itty bitty piece of one color. Same with the in-color CS. I just haven't had a "need" to use any of it yet. But one of these days.... ;>)
No, I don't. I really should though since I have a lot of things that have never even been opened (hanging head in shame...LOL).
Well, you need to go stand in the corner for that!
:p KIDDING!!! I am KIDDING YOU!!!
It always depends on the amount of time I have when I get the new thang at home. Usually, when I get home, there are all these other things that need immediate attention (like supper, or helping with homework, or . . . such is the life of a parent, eh?!) , so it can be days before I am able to play with my new toy. But, delayed gratification isn't always a bad thing . . . especially when I know it's there, waiting for me . . . in the rubbah room . . . muah ha haaaaaaa!!!

Absolutely! New toys have to be played with IMMEDIATELY!
When I get home any deliveries that have been made are waiting for me and I just rip it open, like you, and try it there and then
When it is a new stamps I try them out by indexing them, this way I can tell DH that I have used them and I know what I have on hand so I don't order the same one by mistake. With nesties and other items I do try and use them with in a day or two. The month of December my craft room was packed up so that we could move and it was driving me crazy every time a new package would arrive and I couldn't us it right away. I don't think that I could go longer than a couple of days before playing with my new toys.
No, not all the time. I have a few stuff that I haven't used in months and they're new. They're nice, cute, usable and all that but they're not calling me yet or it's a tool that I still haven't found good use for yet. I'm a collector though so it's most likely why.
I just ran up to my LSS (which is closing so that stinks, but crazy cheap prices right now so that's fun, but mostly it stinks) and got a bag of stuff. I can't decide after this thread if I should break it all in right now or if I should horde some of it for a while.
It's a lot of stuff... I dunno.

I tend to wait some before I use a new something; for me, I almost always have a covered desk and have to finish something up before I can work or use something new. It's more out of space issues than anything. Because my crafting area doubles as my ministry office, new play toys sometimes have to be shelved and stored until work is cleared away!
If I have time, I love to break it open and try it out. If I don't have time OR I've gotten too much in all at once, I'll wait...begrudgingly, but I'll wait.
I pile up my new toys until I have an hour or so to sit and play and then - oh yea.... I play.
My hubby got me a couple of new cartridges for my Cricut for Christmas and they sat unopened until last week-end. I don't get large blocks of play time and I hate to rush thru the fun.
If it is a die or embossing folder, I *have* to try it as soon as humanly possible. I have all my embossing folders organized now into a photo box, they each have their own divider and they are separated into categories. So right away I grab the cardstock I use (it's pink or purple core'dinations because the box is pink with black polka dots), emboss it, sand it, and put it on it's divider, make the label for the tab, and put it in it's new home. That way I get to play with it AND get it put away all at once!
As for the dies, I have a little photo album separated into categories, so I will cut the die, paper piece it together, and glue it down to a piece of cardstock, then put it in the photo album. Again, so I can play and organize at the same time! Then it gets put in the drawer, which has rows for different categories, in the appropriate spot.
OH, on all my dividers, I put a label that says who made the folder, the official name of the folder, and if different, the name I call the folder. If it's an exclusive I put exclusive HSN or exclusive OMC (oh my crafts) or whatever store it is exclusive from. That way if a folder goes missing, I know who made it, what it is called, etc, and it's easier to find if I know if I am looking for a Sizzix or QK or CB.
Stamps - I don't buy many anymore. I love them, love how they look, hate to use them. If it's a sentiment I want/need I will buy it. If it's an image I do not buy it anymore unless I have a very specific project in mind for it and KNOW I will use it. I got tired of collecting drawers and drawers of stamps I won't use. Not that they don't get used - they do - my cousins use them, my sisters, aunts, mom, etc. But I don't add to it much anymore unless it's one I really, really want and know *I* will use it. They still add to our collection though. When I DO buy a new image, I stamp it right away to see how it looks. One of these days I'm going to reorganize the stamps - make index cards for each category with the image stamped, get them all put back in the right drawers (they all are mixed up somehow) etc. But not today. Today I need to organize my CB/Sizzix small folders in their new tin. I got the borders done though and it looks awesome, just have to finish altering the tin!
Next is the Texturz plates which are all flopping around inside a drawer. I want to find a Photo Box big enough for them so I can organize them the same way as the folders.. Maybe somewhere I will find one!
I always do. I cannot understand my SIL as she buys stuff and lets it sit unopened. Last time I was there she bought some stamps still in the bag 6 months before and never pulled them out! Well I did for here!LOL
depends where i am if its at work i will play during break or lunch. If its home then yes right away. Trying to be good at buying but its not going too well LOL
If it's a craft tool, cartridge, embossing folder or stamp, I do stop and work with it for an hour or so to be certain it's what I expected or that it does work properly.
If it's paper or embellishment, then no. That can wait till have a need for it.
I have to say that I am about 50/50. I still have some things that I have not used or opened, ink, stamps, embossing folders etc. I just like to see the big brown truck pull up or go to the LSS's that are close. Some day I will have time to play with everything!!!????
I will SOMETIMES use stuff right away, like a lot of people said, it depends on what it is. If i buy a new Slice cartridge I will take it out of the box, make a cut, and put it away, but if it's a stamp or stamp set, i will only ink it up if i need it and yes, there are many sets in my collection that have never seen ink. Big $$ items or machines I have waited a while to buy I open RIGHT AWAY and make something with it. (like my Silhouette)
My mom has a brand-new in the box Silhouette that's been sitting in her room for 6 months!!! That drives me nuts!!

Do those of you who wait find you loose the excitement of the item?
almost all the stuff I buy, I buy because I saw something done with it that I HAD to try (Toby by the way I just paid for a PTI order with that silly polkadot set we talked about in another thread). So I want to capitalize on that excitement and get cracking while I still have it.
I worry that if I wait I will not be as excited when I do break it open.
But if I waited maybe I wouldn't feel I need to buy new stuff twice a week. It would be nice to stay more on budget. (I want to make clear I'm not bankrupting my family over this hobby, just that I could be a bit better with my stamp money)
Oh and if your mom, Toby, wants to send that silhouette my way I'm sure I can give it some love.
My BFF has had a brand new expression in the box for about 5 months now. I threaten to steal it and cut things. Actually I told her I might buy SCAL for it and really take it. haha.

I think i do lose excitement if the stuff sits in the box. I actually forget what I have that way! I know have some bellas that i've never used that i was really excited to get!!!
haha.. i'm glad you got the polkadot set. i just used it again in a card i posted today. i love it and i know you will too!!
and i'll tell my mom i'll steal her silhouette and sell it if she doesn't start using it! haha..

OMG--yeah, I couldn't wait 6 months. A few days mebbe . . . but any longer, I'd go off the deep end, when it comes to something like a Silhouette! LOL!

I see something I like, in a demo or an example online or whatever and then I buy it order the stuff for it. I get the goodies, set them aside and keep thinking, "I'll get around to trying it soon." Then, when I stumble across it on my shelf or in the box I can't remember where I saw the example or demo or whatever. ACK! I'm so glad I'm not the only one.
Any ideas on organizing my list of "things to do with stuff I just bought" ?
When I see a card I love I print it with the supply list and keep it in a binder. I put the supplies needed for a card on my shopping list . Then when I can buy the supplies needed I know exactly why I wanted them.
I always have a little notebook in my purse where I keep my grocery list. I use a separate page for my craft list. When I go to Hobby Lobby or Michael's I don't make impulsive purchases , I only buy things on the list . I also watch for the things on my list to go on sale. Because I am new to this there are many basic supplies I need.
I have never been an impulsive shopper in any aspect of my life . I go shopping with a purpose. I have a friend who goes to a store "to look around" to see if there is something she doesn't have. I told her unless she buys a Hobby Lobby store there will always be things she doesn't have. LOL
