Default Do you ever make a card just to be making it

Yesterday my niece came over and I was in my craft room. She was looking at some cards that I had on the counter waiting for the embellishments to dry and set. She was asking me who this one was for and who that one was for. Out of the 10 that were sitting there only 2 were really for someone.

The others I made just to be making them and to have on hand just in case. She was surprised and said "I don't know of anyone who makes something just to be making it".

Of course she is only 23 too. And she doesn't do or make anything until the she has to at the last minute

Yes, I do this 1) so I don't have to make them on the spur of the moment 2) to test a design idea for a larger mixed media piece 3) to practice techniques

YES! Actually, I'm not a card SENDER, but a card MAKER! I do make birthday cards for my friends and family, and I do make sure they get them, but I was never into sending cards. Making cards is a pure delight, and I donate 95% of the cards I make to Operation Write Home - after my SU customers have gotten to see them and be inspired by them, that is.

I make cards for the sheer joy of making them, practicing techniques and having fun!

All the time! I very seldom make a card with someone (other than my immediate family) in mind. I love making cards just for the fun of it. For my family, if something comes to me or I see something on Pinterest that I think they would like, I go ahead and make it for them sometimes months and months in advance of when their birthday is or Mothers/Fathers Day. But mostly I just make cards for relaxation and escape from my real world. It's very therapeutic!

Only when I'm doing a specific challenge, or trying a new technique, and can't think of someone to get the card. I really don't like making cards without a designated recipient, because I don't like to have a ton of cards sitting around with no purpose.

I actually stopped doing challenges if I can't think of a recipient.

Yep! All the time. Probably 50-75% of my card-making is "just cause".

Most of my cards are made this way. I get to try new techniques, or just try out some of my large stock of stamps, embossing folders and dies this way. I do make some just for an individual, mostly my young nieces and nephew.

I never do. I have to have an occasion to make one and I always send them.

I think LOTS of people do make cards for the fun of it, without anyone in mind.

I make cards that I see on blogs that I like. Doesn't have to be for someone, it is just that I like the design. Generally, they will work for giving them to someone I know. I change some things to make it personal for the one I am planning on giving it to.

I completely understand. I only make for someone but would like to get into the habit of making for making sake and donating/selling. We shall see.

I love making cards just for the sake of it. When I get a big stock pile I give as gifts and some I sell. My hairdresser has a customer who loves home made and takes anything
I make to work and sells so quickly I cant believe it. She then gives the money to my hairdresser and that covers my and my daughters hair cuts, colour and foils every six to eight weeks. I love trying out new techniques, do in bulk and can always find a happy home for them.

Yeah, I absolutely love to make them and do a better job on them when I am not stressed out needing it right away. I probably have a stash of over 700 cards for all occasions and every holiday just sitting in containers in one of our spare bedroom closets! I told my kids and husband to sell them at my funeral to offset the cost of my burial! LOL!

Yep, I'm a card maker rather than a card sender! I like to make cards to try out an idea or play in a challenge. Sometimes I have a recipient in mind when I'm making a card but most times not.

I recently cleaned out my stash of cards & sent them to a couple of friends for their use.

Yes, I enjoy the process of making the cards and have a major stockpile. That way when Hope You Can Cling To rolls around, I can package up a bunch more than I make for the challenges and send them off to Houston.

Constantly..it is like a compulsion that I can't control and not planning to stop anytime soon! I haven't purchased a card for 10 years...well if you don't count the dollar store cards for people who don't appreciate the handmade one. I have shoe boxes of cards waiting to go! LOL

More often than not the cards I make are just for the fun of making them.
Don't get me wrong, most do end up being used. But they go into my stash first and then when something comes up I go through my stash to choose the one that's right for the occasion/person.

All the time! They go in to my stash and I pick from there when I need one. I tend to leave them blank and I add the greeting depending on what I need it for. My stash is organized by Birthday, Sympathy, Thank You, Friendship, blank, etc. I do send a lot of cards.

I think I am in the minority as most of the time I make cards for a specific purpose/person. I seem to need a deadline or the card just doesn't happen!

Generally, I make cards as I need them, or more honestly, at the last second when I need them.
Sometimes, I'll make a few of the same design but I sort of know who I'll be sending it to.

I have a white board and I write the cards I need to make for the next few months written on there and I tick them off as I make them.

About 90% of the cards I make are for the pure joy of making them and trying new ideas. I stash them for future use or send them to Operation Write Home. I love having a justification for making so many cards. Our troops love being able to send handmade cards to their loved ones.

Most of the cards I make are for swaps and shoebox projects at gatherings or for the troops via From Our Hearts. I do go to monthly classes just to make cards for fun. Most shoebox cards and class cards go into a box for later use and they always seem to fit the recipient that I need them for. What I cannot use a I make into gift sets for birthdays and Christmas or they go to the troops (donating helps "justify" my spending habit).

When I see a design - or inspiration for a design, I make it! Usually 8, 10 or 12!
Yes I have a large stash, but twice a year I make donations to the parents/caregivers at Shriner's Hospital for Children. A group of us also makes cards for the patients to give to whomever they wish, the person who made their prostetic, OT, PT, Nurse, each other. Brings joy.
I also put sets together to give as Birthday gifts and have a special Graduation pack of Thank You's for graduates. I send at least 6 cards a week out to folks who need cheering up.
My motto is - make them for your joy, share them to make joy for others.
Happy Day to all!

I send cards to Operation Write Home ---http://operationwritehome.org/ It is the most incredible organization---hand made cards are sent to our deployed troops for their personal use. Quite a moral booster. I ALWAYS have cards to share. I've even hosted OWH card making parties. 12 of us sent 240 cards/envelopes for our troops. Please check out the website and see if this fits. Thanks

I make cards for friends and family, but often forget to send them! However, nearly all my cards are for Operation Write Home. I keep/use the ones I make that don't meet their requirements (I love glitter and dimension).

I enjoy making cards for people--or challenges. Not all cards made, actually make it to the mail box, but then I have cards made for those moments that pop-up. I enjoy making cards for specific people & I try to combine the challenges with the person I am making my cards for! I love that extra inspiration! I have to say, as I look at my "stash" of cards, there aren't many there that are recently made! (I used to make two of everything & that is most of what my stash is now.)

I make cards almost every day. I take part in the SCS challenges and the Teapotter challenge. I had a huge stash, but found a craft store that will sell my cards. I'm not getting rich by any means, but it funds my paper supply. But I send a lot of cards to family and friends too. Before I retired and the stress of my job nearly drove me over the edge, stamping was the only thing that kept me sane. It allowed me to hibernate for a short period of time in my craft room and forget about the world and my job. Now I stamp for the pure joy of it.

I especially love making Christmas cards and do send them to friends and family but I needed another reason to keep making the large number I like to make. So I decided to hold a small sale in my home every November and I donate all the money I make to the therapeutic riding stable where I volunteer - the money helps to fund kids and adults with disabilities who can't afford their riding and who don't get enough funding from their health care plan. I now get to make Christmas cards to my heart's content without ending up with a growing stash sitting there unused.

I do to try out a layout, etc, but I usually leave off a sentiment so I can use it later. Sometimes it's just fun to make a card, ya know?

Mostly, no. But this is more a time issue than anything else. It is hard for me to find time in the evenings during the work week to stamp, so when I stamp on the weekend, I need to be working on cards for friends, family, co-workers. If i didn't have FT job, I might do more challenges and then donate what I don't want for a specific person.

When I am learning a technique...I dont make a card. I use postcards and then save the one I like best as my "sample" in my how to book/directions. They are easy enough to mount to a card if I wanted to.

I would make cards for all reasons...to send, to have a supply for sending, or to just keep.

I actually do both. When I find a card I just have to make, I make two and a half. That's right. Two to give away, and a card front to keep. If I do something extra special on the inside of the card, I just put it on the back of the keeper card for future inspiration, to display or . . .

I craft to relax. I have a very stressful day job and when I get home I take about and hour to "play" before I exercise, eat and take care of other chores. When usually have a specific organization in mind (Ronald McDonald House, Paws with a Cause, or OWL) and I make cards until I have enough to fill a flat rate box - then I ship them. For my sons, dil's, husband, sisters, etc - I make cards specific for them. I keep a stack of nice thinking of you, and pretty "blank" cards for all purpose sending. Everything else gets shipped out. I figured this is still more productive than, let's say - playing golf or bottle cap collecting. LOL

No. I guess I really don't have time to make cards for no reason. I make cards for my nephews and nieces, birthday cards for a friend's daughter's client's children (whom she babysits), and occasionally, a card or two for Operation Write Home. Maybe if I was retired I would make cards for no one in particular.

This is what I do, but sometimes have to do a streak of Bday or Sympathy cards if I'm running out. It seems like I just creatively freeze up and get brain block if I feel I need to create a specific card immediately. It takes the fun and element of discovery out of it for me. Guess I'm just not good with deadlines

I usually have a running list of swaps to participate in so that's what I make cards for. I have to have a specific reason/theme to feel productive.

I never make just 1 card - I'm one of those stampers who feels more comfortable making multiples of the same card.

I keep cards from swaps to send to family and friends in addition to the ones I make. When I make cards for a swap, I usually add 2 cards to the total I need and put those 2 in my stash.

My twin and I have a Christmas Open House every year and I put out cards I have made/saved and let friends take whatever they want.

Excellent tips!
