So, with the launch today of the new 2018 Stampin' Up catalog, I decided to do something fun. Everyday this month I am going to post a card to my blog that uses what I already have to recreate a card from the new catty. Today is my first one and it's right off the cover.
I'd love to challenge everyone to try and do the same, I think you'll be surprised at the beautiful cards you can make with what you have.
Oh don't work, there is still tons of wonderful new things in the catty that I just have to have, just not as much as I initially thought.
When I teach either at home or in the U.S. I always show how to use a single stamp in many different ways, either by layout or technique. I want to show them how to get the most use out of one stamp. I start out showing how to do a basic card, and then show class examples how they can bring that card up to rthe next level.this seems to be very much appreciated by them.
Definitely a great idea!! I always THINK about what I could do with what I have, that will work with what's in the catty or online...but somehow, doing it doesn't always happen!
Beautiful thread! Thank you! I plan to keep uncovering "old friends" as I have LOTS of them that haven't seen ink in a long time! New friends can wait.
:rolleyes:I added today's card on my blog. I am having so much fun doing this. Today's card used Riveting which I had split up and couldn't remember the name of the stamp. I think it took me longer to find the name than it took to make the card.
Hopped over to your blog this morning and caught up with all of the cards you've posted so far... In most cases I like your card better than the one you've CASEd, so great job on that! I've been trying to convince my shopaholic stamping friend that she should give this a try instead of constantly adding more and more and more to her collection - so far to no avail. I DID tell her NOT to buy me any more stamps for birthdays, Christmas, etc. I told her that last year, too, but she still sent me five sets at Christmas(!). I've already purged a lot of those, unfortunately (my style has changed since we lived near each other and saw each other's stuff all the time).
It's very rare for me to feel the need to buy a specific stamp set based on a card I like - it's more likely that I'll want a die or the paper used, lol! That said, I try to refrain as much as possible on those, as well. Thanks for giving us another example of why it's smarter to "shop our stash"! I'll be checking in on your blog now and again to see the rest of your CASEs.
When I see a card that I want to CASE, I usually see what I have to substitute. I am getting some new ideas from you. Thank you so much for posting this.
Well, look at that Riveting card...how cool is that? Great job! I love that set, and I, too, split it up. Gotta go dig it out. Thank-you for these neat ideas.
I, too, am enjoying seeing your CASEs of the cards using your already owned supplies. Thanks for the reminder today of the leaves from the owl punch. I had forgotten about that feature, and had considered recently getting rid of that punch (gasp!)! I'm glad I still have it!
I also noticed today your continuity in backgrounds, as in the shell~themed photo staging of your cards. I really like the continuity!
I'll be perusing your blog from time to time, as I've enjoyed your card samples. Happy summer!
Yes, thank you! Most stamps I buy are single stamps at the thrift stores. I think a lot of times, they are donated from someone's sets as ones that they either didn't like or need so I truly benefit from that.
Seeing different ways to use my "orphan" stamps is really nice.

Your cards are delightful! I am, however, even more impressed with your ability to find stuff in your stash! I can usually think of something I have that would work for this type of project, but finding the stamp, then the embellishments, and the paper is usually more than I can pull off. Especially the printed paper!! I find it impossible to find paper in a particular pattern or color. When I'm planning a card I usually start with printed paper and go from there.AND you're doing one every day!
What's old is new again......
Bravo on your cases! I'm with Leslie. I don't think I could put my hands on it that fast. Right now, I don't even know where my markers are!
I'll be checking back in to see your progress. There are lots of great cards in the new catty!
Funny I should read this today ...when yesterday I copied a snowflake card for last years catalog using a BoBunny snowflake set and some SSS ink....loved the results
Brilliant idea, I have also decided to cut back on my spending, I literally have thousands of stamps I haven't or have barely used and now that I'm retired and we want to travel it's time to reassess and spend less.

In one of the stamping magazines from YEARS ago, that was my favorite section... one stamp three ways. it was always cool to see what different people came up with.

I love your "old" new cases! I have many older SU! sets and prefer them to most of the new sets. Since many of them are simply a revival of an image from 5-10 years ago, it will be easy to case some samples from the current and older catalogs. Thanks for the great idea!
Sue, I'm starting to grasp that buying more stuff is a lot easier than really using what I already have. I try to challenge myself now to "shop" my own collection at home and use the time I would spend driving to and putzing at the store to actually make something. Shopping and buying are so easy--as long as there is money. But using the beautiful and fun stamps and papers I have is really more satisfying. Your friend might enjoy the challenge to shop at home, too, and have a personal workshop/class right there at home.
Heather, it's interesting you bring this idea up. I keep old SU catalogs to CASE beautiful cards, because the examples are great. When this new catalog, came out, I felt pretty uninspired by most of the stamps. Very little really grabbed me, and the prices were often discouraging, especially knowing there will also be shipping and handling on top of that. Lots of lovely examples, though.

So well put!
You reminded me of something Laura Bassen (Laura Fedora) said in a live interview on On-Line Card Classes. I transcribed just this one response, and have posted this before. I re-read it fairly frequently, not that it always stops me from buying. : )
"When I wasn't doing this for a job, I only had a small amount of stuff, since I was very frugal, and only bought what I absolutely loved. And when I had that, I'd push the creativity level with each product - not just two times, not just three, and would find - oh my gosh - you could really push the envelope when you stay at a product. I knew if I pushed, something amazing could come out, but I don't have the time to push to do a second and a third and a fourth project with one product. And I know it deserves that."
And juststampin, thanks for a wonderful idea and great cards!
You inspired me to case pages 94-95 "Fresh Florals Suite" in the new catty. Take a look in my gallery at my 3 latest cards. How do I attach my card that I uploaded here?
Anyway, I used my Bloomin Heart Thinlit to create a die that looks like the Detailed Floral Thinlit, using old Orchid Opulence Paper. I made my own DSP with the Bloomin Heart stamp set, and made a "faux" die to copy the new "Lovely Words Thinlits" out of an old alphabet stamp, "Alpha Attitude Lower".
Thanks for the idea! This really stretches my creativity!

This is a brilliant idea, and would work for practically any stamp line. For someone who has been wanting to curtail her "incoming stamps", what a great way to look at things! We don't always have to have what is new, when old will make do!!! You have inspired me........
Great Idea!! Just visited your blog and I have to say, the way you are going you don't need anything from the new catty!! Well... Maybe paper! Good job re creating those cards!
Heather, I love your challenge. I do something similar. Each month I choose a theme and make all the birthday cards using that theme in a different way or with a different technique. Often it involves one stamp or a set of stamps. Amazing the many looks you can get from one stamp. Your cards are better than the originals IMHO. I have been very uninspired by the last two SU catalogs, both with stamps and samples. They should hire you!!!
As a demonstrator, can I just say 'Bravo!'!
I had long fretted over not having the latest and greatest to show my friends and customers, yet many of my had-to-have sets never saw ink as my company cycled through promotions and new catalogs, without carrying my faves over. So I have stopped with the excessive purchases. Your idea has given me a jumpstart to get back to those sets I've kept for years and learn to love them again!
Thank you for sharing...it's really wonderful!
