I was just wondering if most/all/none of you who sell your cards and things at craft shows have or are required to have a tax id #.
I was just called by the lady who is in charge of the craft show at my church saying all crafters will need to have a tax id #.
I don't....so I won't be participating in this show.
I'm in Canada, so I don't know what your local bylaws are like, but because it's a hobby, I think this is the reason, most crafters don't have tax numbers, you can't collect tax. Try calling city hall and someone should be able to tell you.

Tax IDs are given out for businesses (i.e., corporation, LLCs, etc.). If you are a sole proprietor, which most of us are, you just need to use your social security number in lieu of a tax ID number. Hope this helps.

I would search online for the Dept of licensing for the city where the event will take place and check under business licenses to see what the requirements are. For some reason, I think there's a connection between a business license and submitting sales tax to the state. I don't know why I think that so I could be totally wrong!!
I am in Florida, and we need to have a tax ID # to do craft shows. I don't have a business lic. though, not necessary. I only do a show or two a year. I just got on-line, and submmitted my paperwork. (I got mine at this time last year) As long as I had started the paperwork before the show, I was o.k. I then have to charge sales tax on the items I sell at the show, and submmitted the $ and a form to the tax collector.
Hope that helps

Lauren ~ Can you give me a website that shows this info? I'm also in Phoenix.
Thanks ladies for all the help/info. This is really an eye-opener.
Yes, if you are going to charge sales tax at the crafts show (which you should), you will need to register with your State's Taxation and Revenue Department. They will give you all the forms and instructions. If they give you a choice, choose to pay the tax quarterly instead of monthly. I was able to get the Tax Id# the same day I applied. It was a painless experience. Most promotors will require you to charge sales tax and pay the State directly. I would suggest you include the tax in your total sales price and round up to an even dollar. That way you are not having to deal with making change.
