I'm currently reading a book by David Lebowitz, and something he wrote about his time as a pastry-chef in Chez Panisse struck me as exactly what I think about CAS. He wrote " I learned that making our deceptively simple desserts was often far more difficult than creating complex, multitieted, over-the-top sugary extravaganzas. Simplicity meant our ingredients - fruits, nuts and chocolates - needed to be absolutely top-notch..."

I so agree with you, Sabrina and David Lebowitz! And I find myself measuring the weight of each piece...for their ‘role’ in advancing the story I am trying to tell! It is indeed something that requires a light touch.

It's a fun looking sketch. I would likely rotate it to have vertical panels.

Hey Sabrina, I just found out my niece is in Ireland right now! Not sure where. She flew with a friend to help him get settled in for a term or two at a school there. I need to talk to her to see exactly where she is.

Default Sketch question

I'm not sure where to ask this. I went to the sketch challenge forum, but it looks like that is only for posting sketches and not asking questions. I was just wondering if anyone has continued to create files with all the sketches? I printed something of a while back that had something like 9 sketches per page. I had printed that file off so I could refer to it when I needed a boost in my mojo. Anyone know what I'm talking about and if it continued? The one i printed off had sketches 378-443.

Hi Kathy (muscrat)!

I like using sketches for a mojo boost too, so I did a quick search and found this sticky:

Downloadable Sketch Files - Splitcoaststampers

My eyes are closing so I didn't scroll down. Hope it's helpful.

Thanks Tina, but thats the file I have. It looks like they quit doing those after sc443 I loved having them printed out. I wish I knew how they did that file. I would continue them.

Thanks Angie. That's what I was afraid of. If I knew how that file was created I would update it. Its probably a PDF writer program and all I can do with PDF is open and read them.

Carla is our hostess for WT755 and we are adding baskets to our cards!

So what is your favorite kind of basket to add to a card? Do you have a favorite stamp or die?

I'd be curious to know where your niece is, Kathy. It's turning into autumn very quickly here, almost too cold in the mornings for sandals this week .

It's not the same as a downloadable file, but personally I find viewing this gallery the easiest way of seeing all the sketches. It's how I was easily able to find one with curved lines when I needed them : SCSketches Member Gallery

I did want to use my basketweave stencil, but my first project took so long that I didn't have time to make a card. Otherwise I have two images of animals cycling with bicycle baskets on their bikes, and a couple of other small basket images.

Be prepared to be amazed and hungry! The Inspiration Challenge this week is brought to us by Stef and it's a treat for the eyes and I am sure the cakes themselves are delicious!

It's a holiday weekend here in the US, if you have a 3 day weekend how are you going to spend it?

Do you have any cake decorating stories? A special cake you decorated or a cake disaster?

My most adventerous cake was a Barbie Doll cake I created for my daughter. It was sooo fun. It was one of those where you create the dress from the cake and then stick a barbie doll pick in the middle. Not sure I have a photo. Cake decorating isn't my thing so I was delighted with the end result. I also made my son a green tractor cake but it was from one of those shape pans and then I just decorated it with the small flower tip. Sort of like pointilism.

My husband's days off fell mid week this week so no plans there but my kids are both going to be home so we will attend church together and I imagine we will go out for a yummy ice cream treat or something! Goodness, I see changes in my daughter after only 3 weeks of being away what's it going to be like when she has been at college 4 years?!

You'll be amazed at the strong woman she grows into.
That's what happens.

My son has always lived in the Barracks as a Marine (5+ years now and counting) so, he has saved a bit over the years and just rented his first house. (a duplex)

and so the cake I picked was because that was going through my mind.

Hey, its Hunting widow weekend #2 here... no adult supervision. no food has been cooked. (yet) but, the coffee is on. Me, I am hoping to play with some of the things that I bought before DTGD and tweak them into Christmas cards this weekend. The dogs think we should spend the whole time outside. ( which will probably be the bulk of the days esp. when its too warm to be upstairs)

I am not good with frosting. no matter how hard I tried. I actually enjoy baking but, frosting and decorating cakes is not a talent I have the patience and skills for.

The only cake i ever decorated was Winnie the pooh. Like Angie, it was a shaped pan and I just used the flower tip and changed colors where needed. Pointillism for sure!

I've decorated a lot of cakes in my time, including a good few wedding cakes. I liked making the decorations but NOT trying to get the royal icing as flat as flat (not a fan of fondant paste).

Best memories...making a rabbit for my sister when she was, I guess, 8 or 9. I used two pudding bowls, and desiccated coconut on the frosting. She didn't want to cut it because it was too cute and it went stale.

What was I thinking of, maybe that year or the year before I had made an Italian chocolate biscuit cake for my brother's birthday. So no frosting, but we had a set of birthday candle holders that were a train, with an engine and carriages. I sorted hundreds and thousands (tiny round sprinkles, jimmies, I don't know what they're called bin American) into different colours to spell out "Happy Birthday".

I loved the cake I made for my brother's winter wedding. His wife wore a remodelled family wedding dress with vintage lace and a designer friend used the Celtic knot motif from it for the invitations. So I made a whole load of of those with gold outlines and blue filling to use for decorating the sides of the tiers, and a little white church to decorate the top.

I decorated another cake for a friend, very traditional style with yellow roses, and set it up at the reception venue. Next time I looked at it, it had acquired a little model mountaineer abseiling down it, to represent the groom.

I loved the inspiration site today! Believe it or not for all my craftiness, I have never made a cake. I just hate baking.

I took three vacation days so I'm in the middle of a six day weekend and loving every second of it! We went to the zoo and golfing. Now we're at a family cookout.

How fun to read about the cake stories or lack of a cake story!

Stacy, I hope you and the dogs enjoyed the day! I always enjoy a backpacking widow day! That's so cool that your son has saved his money and is now enjoying his first rental home!

Sabrina, your cakes sounds amazing! So sweet of you to make cakes for your siblings!

Kathy, I bet that was a cute Winnie the Pooh cake!

Jennifer, I think I would enjoy baking more if I didn't have to cook! Just doesn't seem like there is enough time in the day to do it all. I make a mean German Choc cake though. No real decorating with that.

The try a new Technique is revisiting Washi Tapes ( you know that stuff people hoard until they are confronted with a challenge for it?) hee hee...

I have some, and mine all seems to unstick mid project so, I do not use it much except on the backs of envelopes and then I cover it with clear packing tape so it stays put.

There are some gorgeous things in the gallery already for this challenge.

WT756 is things that use gas.

There are some super cute cards in the gallery already.

Do you have a favorite card or a favorite image of featuring something that uses gas?

Actually, I was wishing I had a motor-mower stamp. My favourites that I have are Snoopy in a bug and a lovely LOTV one of a bear cleaning an old vintage card. And my Stampalicious Road Hawg. But since I wanted to make a card for my brother, I actually didn't use any of those.

I don't have the right image but I was thinking a gas grill would be different.

Sabrina ... Maybe you substitute a tractor (unless that is a motor-mower)?

I'm hoping to clear off enough space to stamp a few cards. I joined a swap but my day off was spent at work so I have to clear and stamp today.

I'm literal-minded, and since the challenge title was gasoline and not gas, I ran with that. I do actually have a little tractor stamp, I just thought a petrol mower would be fun.
We bought a little portable table-top gas BBQ for our holidays this year, which would run off the same camping-gaz cylinders as our two-burner cooker. It was great, both because it was so much quicker than charcoal, and also because some of more southern campsites don't allow charcoal (except in the communal brick BBQs) because of the risk of fire.

Just took a peek at the thumbs for the IC. Some great inspiration there. I'd already been thinking I'd like to make a wreath card. But primary focus today is sorting out my next couple of TLC challenges.

Judy's TLC challenge is for us to use the colouring medium that makes us the must uncomfortable to use. By a mile that's markers, for me. I only ever do marker blending if a challenge calls for it. I don't even have Copics because I know I don't have time for the learning curve they would require.

Well, I don't think I will be able to play today but if I could it would probably be colored pencils. Ugh. I am terrible with colored pencils.

I actually color with everything but, it goes through cycles.

I think the thing with markers I don't particularly like when I use them is it just looks too smooth and too flat. ( even if I shade and shade) I do not end up marginally happy with a marker image unless I add pencil over the top to it after.

but, I do use markers for skin on people go figure eh?
