I haven't had any time to play in the VSN, but want to wander over to see the challenges and at least some of the cards made. I still need to go check out the FS challenge, as well - never enough hours in the day!
To your question about books, Angie, reading and paper crafting are my two favorite ways to spend free time. Right now I want to read a book that's been on my shelf for a long time but I've not yet read:
"An Alter In The World" by BarbaraBrown Taylor (non-fiction) and
"Beneath A Scarlet Sky" by Mark Sullivan (fiction).
As one of my teacher tee shirts says "So many books, so little time"!

Great T-shirt, Claudia! A sentiment I agree with wholeheartedly! I’d also like one that says “so many rubber stamps in my craft room, so little time to use them all!”

I’ve looked at the VSN challenges and there are lots I’d like to do. I’ll see how the week goes as we have till the 24th. And want to get one posted today for Di for FS. But need to grocery shop first!

To answer Angie’s question - the book I would sit down and read is the new mystery by Louise Penny - I’m saving if for the quiet time between Christmas and New Year’s.

Ang in answer to your question, I would love to sound smart and say War and Piece, but you know that wouldn't be true LOL. The book I have waiting for me on the bookshelf is called War Paint. Basically it is the combined biographies of Miss Elizabeth Arden and Madame Helena Rubinstein (although in their 6 decades of business, they never met).

They were both born in the late 1800's, neither had any formal education and they both built their business before the First World War. Elizabeth Arden's real name was Florence Nightingale Graham - I found all that out on page one!!!

I once told my library teacher that I didn't have time to read a particular book one week. She gasped and said, "Susan there are 168 hours in a week, you will need a better excuse than that". After that I read every book she ever gave me and I know there are 168 hours in a week as well as I know my own name.

Books - I'd like to read Barbara Kingsolver's Unsheltered, I've been hearing snippets of it on Book at Bedtime and it sounded interesting but mostly I fell asleep before hearing it all.

Lyn's the TLC hostess today, with Artist Trading Coins - which gives people who don't play in the MIX challenge an opportunity to give them a try

Yes, it's Monday and housework here but I booked the day off as yesterday was a long day, 6 hours driving and six hours down in Cork. So I'm sneaking up to make a quick card with mine as I don't intend to trade them, and still have my two MIX ones sitting on the desk waiting to be made up into something.

Interestingly, none of my circle dies actually measures 2 1/2 " and I don't have a punch that large, but by layering on a ring (which I do have , mine do come in at a finished size of 2 1/2".

Our Teapot Tuesday destination this week is a 99th birthday celebration for Irene, the mother-in-law of one of our new Dirty Dozen: mmtpt543 ~ december 18 2018 ~ birthday celebration t627308.html

And the colour challenge is Basic Grey, Lovely Lipstick and Daffodil Delight, with the dessert option of a tag. Oops, forgot the link. Here it is:cc718 more than basic its lovely daffodil 12 18 18 a t627283.html. Next week, being Christmas day, will be the same colours.

I didn't get my card for Irene finished in time to take a photo yesterday but I'll be back with it after work. Birthdays soon before and after Christmas can so easily get combined with Christmas. I had fun making a very non-seasonal card including a nod to knitting, which is one of Irene's interests.

I love the color challenge today! So bright and cheerful! Just right for the end of December after all the red and green we have been working with!

I am playing along with the teapot challenge. My card for Irene is a very summery card. I really enjoy creating bright colored cards in the winter!

How is everyone doing just a week away from Christmas?
Everyone taking deep breaths and drinking eggnog?

I was a little flustered yesterday and sweet Sabrina came to my aid.
Do you have a friend or are you that friend who brings a breath of calm to the busy holiday season?

Yes! I have a friend I can count on to bring me encouragement and prayers as needed. We text all day long, sometimes just saying what were making for supper, other times to share our aches and pains. We are two peas in a pod and sometimes I will text her an answer to a question she was just about to ask, and vice versa.

I also have a wonderful prayer group on SCS that helps me through and encourages as well!

Ways To Use it is up!!! Bring on the Bling!

Today's questions are all about bling. What season do you use bling the most? What is your favorite way to add bling?

Christmas is definitely when I use the most bling. I love enamel dots, is that considered bling? Gems are pretty but they are a bit troublesome going through the mail. Sequins are the best. They are light and coordinate easily with color combos They are also economical!

Your turn, share with us about bling!

My favourite way to add bling, is to use liquid pearls. I'm not sure if they are classed as bling though. Then again, Stickles are considered bling and as liquid pearls and stickles are cousins....see where I'm going Ang?

Stickles for me, followed by Liquid Pearls but I use those in a very understated way. I like rhinestones, too. Yesterday was our work lunch so I was MIA, but now I'm running down the home straight and looking forward to a little just for fun stamping time when I finish up in work on Friday. The only thing left on my to-do is a Guinness can bird ornament for my sister, we have a loose tradition of giving each other a tree decoration each year.

Yep, Susie, I would say liquid pearls are bling.

Yay, Sabrina! I am glad you will have a little bit of time for stamping soon!

I am not sure, I think I am going to try and get my crew to bake with me today. Crafting of a different sort! We are supposed to have some nasty weather coming in so my people are all talking of staying home today. Yesterday they were all out Christmas shopping while I stamped. Kind of weird to have grown up kids doing their own shopping!

I love all kinds of bling and have a huge stash of sticky backed gemstones and pearls, little jars of glitter, and sequins. And a more modest stash of stickles and liquid pearls. My favourites are the gemstones and glitter. And I’ve got quite a lot of glittered cardstock,

Does glitter and glittered cardstock count as bling?

Christmas cards are the ones I use the most bling on. And I still need more to hand deliver locally so will try to get something made today for the challenge.

A baking day sounds good, a shared baking day even better. I kind of promised to make baklava and bring some in for someone in work; if I check and see that she's rostered on for tomorrow I might make that this afternoon. And we are right out of my pears preserved with ginger which is DH's standby dessert, so I could do with making a batch of that before Christmas. My main traditional baking will be the Bûche de Noël on Christmas Eve. The traditional decoration is little meringue toadstools but I bought some nice red and white china ones last week.

Oh my goodness, your Buche de Noel looks fabulous! It’s making me hungry just looking at it. But it’s first thing in the morning here, so too early for chocolate for me. Off to eat breakfast now. Then I’ll fit in a bit of crafty time before heading out for groceries.

That's what I count as bling! I like wink of Stella or spectrum noir sparkle pen to add sparkle. I don't use brads or other bumpy stuff if I'm mailing, but I'd certainly add them for cards hand delivered. I like sequins too.

Susan sparkling paper counts to me!

Sure wish they could get the problem with the "likes" fixed!

I had a great at-home day today - made two cards (one for VSN, one for Ways to Use It), baked a batch of Christmas cookies, and decorated my living room mantelpiece and put up my tree. I'm one of those who doesn't like the Christmas decorations to go up too early - maybe because that's how it was at home when I was growing up. Decorating was done 5 or 6 days before Christmas and then left up till Twelfth Night (Jan 6). My favourite period of Christmas is between Christmas and New Year's - it seems so much calmer and peaceful then.

Janelle's MIX challenge is to use clocks or clock-related elements: mix308 wind down holidays t627345.html

And Jeanne's F4A is one layer cards: f4a461 uno layero 12 12 18 a t627348.html

Carla sent some lovely laser-cut bits in her card to me including some clocks, so between that and Janelle's early post I'll be doing my darndest to fit something in today, but I have to swing by for a few groceries after work, and we are going to a light exhibition at the zoo this evening so we need an early dinner.

The zoo lights were fantastic last year, so I'm looking forward to it. I booked the tickets the first day they were available . I just hope the current drizzly weather has dried up by tgen. Here's a link to last year's album: https://photos.app.goo.gl/k4HPPTFx4xhJCM0V2

I got A MIX card made before work, but despite my best efforts I didn't incorporate one of Carla's laser cuts. Since it's only just sunrise here, the photo will be after work. I also didn't get the baklava made yesterday, I thought it would be better to decorate the tree so it wasn't sitting in the middle of the floor for yet another day . I only had a birch branch with a few decorations last year, it was fun seeing them all again.

p.s. did you notice the paper holly on the bûche, I was really pleased with that.

The paper holly, the little bird, the meringues! It's all stunning Sabrina!

Oh my! So thankful for the linked challenges! This week I have been heading to bed earlier so I didn't get a chance to see the challenges. Today, upon waking, Steve had me out of the house without allowing me coffee or a stop by my computer. It was not worth a "discussion".

I desperately need to make a one layer card for someone. I hope I can play later. We are about to eat lunch, ummm make that supper. it's 5pm!

Who likes to create one layer cards? I love them but it's hard to do when Copic coloring because the copics come through. So I really rack my brain coming up with designs.

I make heaps of one layer card fronts, but I guess once they are stuck on a card base, they are no longer considered one layer cards. My smack & squirt backgrounds and messy mixed media are not possible, Copics and Sharpies are all ruled out as they bleed through, so I guess it would be fair to say I struggle with one layer.

I do not like making one layer cards at all - they seem a bit skimpy to me and do not sell at my fundraiser at all. I think my buyers like getting "more" for their money - or just like the extra substance and dimension. So I don't ever do one layer challenges. I did one of the VSN challenges today but that's all I had time for.

Susan, that is so interesting. I can see that happening. A friend of mine worked our fair entries and urged me to enter a card that had more layers even though I thought the CAS cards were prettier!

I love making one layer cards! I have some heavy weight Bristol cardstock that doesn’t bleed through with Copic colouring, at least for lighter colours - not sure how it would do with lots of dark shading. Interestingly, when I did a craft fair a few years back it was the packs of one layer cards that did sell, the more complex layered stuff not so much. I packaged five cards with mixed sentiments and themed images in cello bags tied with ribbon, hang on, I’ll see if I can find a picture, I’m sure I blogged some. Here we go, these were seaside themed ones:

Ditto to what Kathy said, Joanne, they're lovely.

I don't tend to make one layer cards because they're not "me" when it comes to sending them. Sometimes they just turn out that way, and I'm happy when they do. I've made some that I love, especially using the Bordered sentiment technique, and a dry-embossed frame always adds a lot to a one layer card IMO.
