I was inspired by the birds sitting outside my kitchen window and wanted them to be the focus of the card - the window is kind of secondary.

I agree with you, Sabrina, that they need something to ground them. The card I made today doesn't have something, but often, I use brick or wood (either dp or an embossing folder) for looking inside like this card, or a small print dp that could pass for old-fashioned wallpaper for a window looking out like I did in this card.

Susan, I feel like your window was grounded by the birds on the branch and the branch over the window. It's a gorgeous card! Jumped right off the gallery page!

Today's MIX is an early post and it is birds: MIX 306 - Put a Bird On It! - Splitcoaststampers.

It'll be a quick one from me because I have to be in work early and I'm not sure yet how late I have to stay...till my boss gets back to the building so I'm pretty sure it will be too late to take a photo and upload today. But I already know what bird I'm going to use . Not a robin or a cardinal.

Susan you nailed the challenge, I love your card. Sabrina you tipped my world upside down by using a Digi stamp during the week (I loved it), but I swear if you make a crazy bird card I am going to Intepol and request they find our Sabrina!!!

F4A459 is to add gold to our projects! We recently talked about our favorite way to add gold. I can't wait to check out the gallery later to see all the gold!

Thinking of the MIX challenge here's a non-paper question. Do you have bird feeders in your yard?

We just recently moved our feeders closer to the house so we can watch the birds. We are attracting so many different kinds of birds. We watched our resident mama and papa cardinal bring their young ones to the feeder this summer. I just noticed a community of, I guess sparrows. I looked them up and can't really find an exact match. They have tufts of rusty red on their head and breast. Watching the birds come and go is fascinating to us and great entertainment for our indoor cats!

After our last discussion about gold, I bought a couple of gold items & realized I had a wink of Stella gold pen. I’m going to try to play today!

I am your happy hostess for the Inspiration Challenge this week and I have chosen one of my favorite stores to visit when I am on vacation. I hope you will have a chance to play along!

If you had time today would you choose a Christmas inspiration or something else?? Check out the Inspiration Photos I attached to the challenge post and tell us which one is your favorite?

I think my favorite is the first one. All that white with a touch of pink AND a cat! I also love the nativity! Simple yet so meaningful.

Got things posted for today's two challenges! Hoping to do the IC tomorrow. Angie, you asked if we'd choose a Christmas inspiration - I definitely would!! Tough to choose my favourite of the inspiration images you posted - it's a tie for the nutcrackers and the Christmas village.

You also asked if we have bird feeders - I do, and watching the birds is one of my favourite things to do when I'm sitting at my kitchen table.

Your first thumb reminds me of a lovely little snowglobe I bought in Paris a few years ago - no kitty in mine, though. If I had time to make a card (and I am focussing on the last few special cards for family with whatever creative energy I can find) it would be those lovely woodland ornaments. I did take a look through the light section, hoping to find something like my favourite set of childhood Christmas lights, which were like little Victorian lanterns.

Bird feeders, yes indeedy. Had to replace them all at considerable expense with squirrel-proof ones as the pesky greys were not only eating all the food but pulling down, chewing up and generally destroying the feeders too. We had more variety of birds when I was able to hang them from a neighbour's mahonia tree overhanging our back yard, but they cut it down. Now I just have two of those iron poles with hooks for hanging your feeders from and they are along the back wall so the birds have some shelter. I love watching them and can spend hours...but sadly the squirrel-proofing makes it harder to see them. Early in the year when we had the exceptionally heavy snow our back garden was like Grand Central with all sorts of birds thronging the feeders. The first time, I had to climb out the window to feed them. Not planning for snow, our back door (and most than I can call to mind) opens outwards and I couldn't open it for the drifted snow. I have one for sunflower seeds, one for peanuts, one for fatballs and one for niger seed.

Angie I love the summer Santa with his floatie and crayfish...very Aussie, it was 109F here the Christmas before last! About the bird feeders, we hand feed a family of Magpies and they have 2 big dog bowls that they swim around in. One of our Maggies thinks he is a duck! Time for bed now, have a great day everyone.

Oh, Susie, that made me chuckle. Your Magpie thinking he is a duck!

Sabrina, my husband keeps trying to squirrel proof and so far the squirrels are winning. They are getting fat too!! I worry about them! LOL

Steve doesn't think the little red and brown birds which I thought might be a type of sparrow, are sparrows but we still haven't identified them. At first, there was only one or two but they have since invited their entire community. They enlist a watchman who perches on the feeder and sends the other varieties away until the community has finished. It's really quite fascinating.

Stacy, I want that nativity!!! out of my price range for this year though.

Susan, yay on getting two challenges done. I will be checking to see if you have time for the IC!

I just now saw that there is a bird challenge, I do hope to play along! I have issues with squirrels too, I run after them quite a bit to scare them off.

I just was addressing Christmas cards in the kitchen and doing a bird count. I have a couple new species this year that are down from Canada since they have not-so-many pinecones this year. We have Pine Siskins twice now and Red Breasted Nuthatches often. I had seen neither bird before this year.

Depending on where you are, your red and brown bird may be a House Finch. They are very common in the US, more common than Purple Finches. Of course there are other red and brown birds, but that is the most common one I see at feeders. There is an app called Merlin that is very helpful for identifying birds, and I highly recommend a good bird book, if you really like watching them.

We get a zillion and one house finches... it snowed last night so we got some snow capped chickadees this morning. on a regular basis we get Morning doves, Blue Jays, the house finches, some other finches, wood peckers, grackles, black birds.

( we have 9 bird feeders in the yard)

and we do not have squirrels. or chipmunks or anything that might be cute and furry ( we have gophers but, they are shy, I never see them just the holes they make in the yard and flowerbeds)

I will check out the house finch and get back to you and I will check out the app! We don't see blue jays very often here. Blue Jays were very common in Kansas where I spent much of my childhood but I rarely see a Blue Jay here. My neighbor gets pretty blue birds but we don't and I think it's because they have huge wide open spaces and we have a lot of trees.

Sounds like a fun yard Stacy!

I haven't been to Hawaii, but if the people are half as sweet as Vicki, it must be paradise. Vicki's thank you message in the Featured Stampers thread brought tears to my eyes. I love Splitcoaststamperville!!!

Totally OT! I haven’t been posting (though have been reading!) since I haven’t been doing challenges, but “bird” “blue jay” “blue bird” lured me in!

Yes, house finches. Re blue birds, does your neighbor happen to have a feeder with hulled (shelled) sunflower chips? A bluebird’s beak can’t crack open seeds. But they’ll eat sunflower chips if there are no bugs, etc. to eat.

Bluebirds come to our mostly wooded yard to the deck to a Droll Yankee tube feeder with sunflower chips. Later we got two meal worm cage feeders, one designed for bluebirds with slightly larger openings. The chips are Hot Meats by Cole so squirrels don’t eat them (or a bag of hot stuff can be mixed in).

The other tube feeder has millet and safflower (mixed in a garbage can), which squirrels don’t like. Well, maybe one out of a hundred. Our little chipmunks use a deck chair to get to the rail to get some.

We put safflower/millet in a tray feeder too, and peanuts in another for blue jays, woodpecker and ... squirrels! Once in a while a pileated woodpecker will come to the sunflower chip feeder but mostly like the suet on trees.

A great kindness and safety net for birds when water freezes is a heated bird bath or bird bath with a heater in it, assuming there are outdoor outlets. We toss out Cole’s mix with fruit for robins when snow covers the ground - they can’t crack open seeds either so winter is the only time they come to the deck buffet.

My apologies for the length. Y’all hit the bird switch. I love reading about your challenges!

How universal is the magpie rhyme? (One for sorrow, two for joy...) Reading about US and Australian magpies had me wondering whether the same folklore is attached to them in places the English might have had, ahem, influence. I know it’s totally different in, say, Chinese culture.

If anyone’s up for a bit of English folk music there’s a beautiful rendition of Magpie (based on that rhyme) by the Unthanks here

We have a peanut feeder up. It gets loads of visitors, my favourites being a family of greater spotted woodpeckers (mum, dad and junior all having distinguishing features so even I can tell the difference!) and a nuthatch. Our garden has a somewhat wild aspect which is great for all kinds of birds, even without the feeder and we have a water supply for them, too.

Joanne, thanks for sharing that! Such a pretty song. I have not heard that rhyme.

Kathy, I received the same message so I went to youtube and typed in Magpie Song.

It's very pretty!

Bjeans, all are welcome to converse any time even if you can't play in a challenge! I am not able to play in many either right now. Thanks so much for commenting about the birds. I love lengthy chats! We do need to get a heater for the birdbath. We don't usually get hard freezes but it does happen. They do seem to be grateful for the water!

I looked it up and the little bird with a red head and breast IS a House Finch! Thanks so much Heidi for the info!

Awww Susie, thanks so much for posting about Vicki's response to being FS! I went and read her comment. What a sweetie. I hope to post my card tomorrow.

Misti has posted the CAS challenge and it will be a helpful challenge!
How many birthday cards do you create in December?

The TLC challenge is up too! Judy's challenge is Assembly Line stamping!

Do you enjoy creating the same card in multiples? I am not a fan. A recent challenge nearly killed me. LOL However I believe I could create THIS one over and over. I would probably create a bunch of different plaid cups though.

I end up needing 10-12 birthday cards in Dec. plus a couple of Anniversary cards. Both of my boys & my fil have Dec birthdays.

It depends on the card, whether I like to do multiples. But if I do make multiples 12 of one design is about my max.

Angie, thanks for linking up the You Tube for the Magpie song. I grew up in England till I was 10 and I certainly remember the rhyme from when I was a child there, but don't know if it is commonly known here in Canada.

Glad the CAS challenge is birthdays as I have a couple coming up later this month - it will get me to make one tomorrow (heading to bed now).

Will have to think about the TLC challenge as I don't make multiples of my cards. Though I'm running out of time to get Christmas cards made so might make a few multiples!

It's funny how different we all are with our card making. When my mojo goes on holidays without telling me, I replicate a card I've made before (hence all my cards with the dead bird in the girls hair), but I can't for the life of me make duplicate cards in one session. Mind you I can't watercolour or make CAS cards either.

I'm loving this thread. I wonder how many people, other than Splitcoasties, got to chat with friends from the USA, UK, Canada and Australia today.

I have several December birthdays to create for. Goodness, how can it be that the little girl I used to mind when she was just a baby turned 18 today! I sent her a special Chibitronics card...some time during the year I had the sweetest card from her thanking me for sending cards each year. This year I haven't even got to see the family once life is too busy. January used to be my busy month for special cards with my parents as a sandwich and my sister as the filling - now it's only my sister left.

Not a fan of multiples except where there's a practical need - like shortage of time. Once I made about twenty Christmas cards the same and I said never again. Four is usually my limit when a challenge calls for easily reproducible cards. I tried coming up with a design for Judy's challenge. I like the card I ended up with, but by the time I moved onto embossing the second one, I debossed by mistake. It might be salvageable, but I think it's time for bed....

Kathy, I received the same message so I went to youtube and typed in Magpie Song.

Sorry Kathy, I didn’t think to check for a region restriction. Thanks for tracking down an alternative Angie! Rachel and Becky Unthank come from Newcastle (about 30 miles away from where I live) and I love the fact you can hear the Geordie accent when they sing! Sounds like the rhyme might be peculiarly English though.

I made cards for December birthdays... but they are also for VSN this weekend, so I can't post them yet! LOL

Same thing happened with Misti's pearl challenge recently.

If I could actually get my VSN samples done, I could play along with the other challenges too.

Right there with ya! Only reason I got a CAS card made is I’m on the DT & since I’m guest DT for the sketch challenge, I’ll have a card for that one. The others I can get back to soon!

Todays Teapot Tuesday cards can be sent to Nick, a destination suggested by JRHolbrook, Judy aka Gracie. Anita's our hostess, her challenge is here: MMTPT542 ~ December 11th, 2018 ~ Modern Technology - Splitcoaststampers

In the light of her challenge, I'll ask a question of my own...what's the most-used app on your smart device? Not counting a browser . I said Solitaire, but in fact it might be the Google Drive app as I access it frequently for work, SCS stuff, saved knitting pattern patterns and recipes, addresses, my birthday card list and so on ...

Ohhh I don't even have to think about this question...hands down it's Borrow Box. My local library gives all the members free access to books, written and audio, free of charge on Borrow Box. I guess I know what my card for Nick will be

Susie, I laughed when I read your comment about not posting a question. My brain could not come up with a question at 1 am.

I was enjoying watching quite a few episodes of Mrs. Maisel with Elisabeth. She had a 2-hour school delay today because of ice so we stayed up and watched extra episodes. THat is a FUNNY show! Some bad words but funny and oh, I do love those dresses she wears!!! I then proceeded to type up my Project Bin blog and found myself asleep sitting up several times! LOL As my final act before toddling off to bed I posted the color challenge but not a question came to mind except, what am I still doing up? LOL

Great question Sabrina, I think it's a three-way tie for me. Facebook, Messenger (I connect with friend groups that way) and 1010!

Oh, and Susie, your most used APP sounds wonderful!!!!
