Thumbs up Cards for Recovering American Soldiers

This might have already been posted but I got it in my e-mail and figured I'd pass it along..

If you're already doing cards all it costs is a stamp.

Please DON'T do this!!!! Walter Reed CANNOT accept any package or card addressed to "Any Recovering Soldier."

I checked this at Walter Reed's Website and this is what I found:

Walter Reed Army Medical Center officials want to remind those individuals who want to show their appreciation through mail to include packages, letters, and holiday cards addressed to 'Any Wounded Soldier' or 'A Recovering American Soldier' that Walter Reed cannot accept these packages in support of the decision by then Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Transportation Policy in 2001. This decision was made to ensure the safety and well being of patients and staff at medical centers throughout the Department of Defense.

In addition, the U.S. Postal Service is no longer accepting "Any Service Member" or "A Recovering American Soldier" letters or packages. Mail to "Any Service Member" that is deposited into a collection box will not be delivered.

Instead of sending an “Any Wounded Soldier” letter or package to Walter Reed, please consider making a donation to one of the more than 300 nonprofit organizations dedicated to helping our troops and their families listed on the "America Supports You" website, www.americasupportsyou.mil

This is such a lovely idea and I was about to jump on board and send it out to all my friends, but a little voice told me to check it out. Glad I did.

Thanks, Linda and DLS881. I was going to go find this info myself and you saved me the trouble! I send cards through Sue Salsburg to the troops overseas, but I wanted to start sending to the recovering troops as well.

Just a guess but I imagine that before 2001 this was an appropriate way to send cards to the troops. The times have changed what is and is not acceptable but "chain mail" with outdated info will always be out there. The best we can do is try to get the accurate info out there and maybe the dated stuff will fade away. Thanks for bringing the idea to our attention though so we can support them through Operation: Quiet Comfort or one of the other organizations out there.
