Default Can someone explain paper piecing?

Hi,

I have seen some awesome working using paper piecing and wanted to know how it works. I read about the templates, but I am not sure how they work. Do you draw the design on paper and cut out? Where can I get the templates? Thanks!

Hi, addiemae! For stamping purposes, I just stamp an image onto patterned paper and then cut out just the portion I want. Say I have an image of a girl on a swing and I want to give her a pretty dress. First I stamp her on my cardstock, then stamp again on my patterned paper. Cut out just the dress from the patterned paper and adhere it to the stamped image on the cardstock.

I can't quite think of how a template would be needed for this. Years ago I did applique piecing with fabric that needed them, but it's pretty straightforward with stamping. Hopefully I've understoon the question you're asking, lol!

Thanks msbetsyz and jbalcer for the instructions and tutorial for paper piecing using stamps. Does anyone know how when scrapbooking? I have done this with the cricut, but I have seen some without the cricut using templates. I cannot find the link or example I saw on ebay.:( Thanks again!

Do you mean just cutting out shapes from a given pattern? I looked up "paper piecing scrapbook layout" in google and got this as the first hit:

i guess you just have to look around for templates?!

Cool Ahhh....Memories!

Ahhh...Paper Piecing! Wow! You are bringing back memories!

Paper Piecing was very popular about ten years ago in scrapbooking. Just about every layout that was published had some sort of pp on it. Bears, bunnies, etc. were the main focus.

In fact, it was a bear pp that landed me a job as a contributing editor for a scrapbooking magazine. ;) Those were the days....

Ok, back then, before Windows in Time came out with a pattern book, we used tole painting books, coloring books, clip art, etc. We'd cut out each piece, (sometimes needing a few copies of the original pattern) that would be it's own cardstock color or patterned paper.

Then, we'd cut out the cardstock/paper and piece together our finished product. I've added a photo of a doll pp. This was from a tole painting book. (Keep in mind, this layout is 12 years old!)

Paper dolls soon came out, since they are so similar to pp. Then, pattern books came out, punch art books...the rest is history.

With the Cricut and such, pp is starting to make a comeback! I'm thrilled!

HTH,
Stephanie

I have several paper piecing items in my gallery, most of mine I do just with scissors by looking at a picture

If you stick to basic shapes and then tweak them a bit by cutting and shaping you can do alot and don't really have to be artistic

it is really a matter of being able to see things as different pieces of a whole and putting them back to gether

it is certainly not hard to cut or punch a circle, a few rectangles and a triangle, to piece a snowman head. KWIM?
