From what I understand, it was hand cut. Some people have copied it by tracing the butterfly on vellum paper (or similar) and then making a template from that.

Customers can order the Big Shot from their demonstrator beginning September 2 (ask your demo for a copy of the downloadable brochure). The holiday mini ordering period is October 1, through December 31, 2008. They will be mailed probably two weeks prior.

As someone else indicated, the large butterfly on the cover was done free-hand. A felllow demonstrator apparently called SU to ask and was told that the designer did it by hand w/o a template of any sort.

I really like that butterfly. I was so hoping it would be one of the new dies for the die cutting machine. I think it is dissapointing to know that SU would feature such a beautiful creation on their front cover when most of their customers will most likely not be able to duplicate it. I certainly cannot freehand a butterfly like that. Sigh!! Thank you to everyone who answered the question. I can't wait to see what dies they will be selling.

Thanks for the info. I have looked and looked thru the cattie and unable to find it as well. Maybe the SU designer could design a template?????

My demo thought it was hand done but also done using some of the punches.

I don't know what the designer used for the butterfly on the SU catty ... but I do know that fiskars have one or maybe two butterfly templates for their cutting system .... you could trace around it and cut out by hand if yu didn't have that particular system but wanted the template

here is a pic I found when I googled so you can see it.

If it is a hand cut butterfly than why is there two in a bell jar at the musuem at Riverton. I took pictures when I was on the tour at convention. Also on the third page of the Decor Elements in the upper right hand corner is the bell jar with the butterflies in it. In the new catty page 199 stampin' supplies doesn't give the details on the butterfly either.

I have an idea that would be easier than drawing free hand. Stamp a large butterfly stamp (I have many from different companies). Cut out that image to use as a template. I would choose a butterfly with simple lines so its easier to cut out many times. Me and Carrie Lou has quite a few that would work great.

Another possibility is to download a dingbat font and print one character as large as you want to make a template. There are several butterfly fonts available. Here's a free one: http://www.dafont.com/butterflies.font

It seems strange to me that it was hand-drawn. Why would a stamping company put a hand-drawn image on the front of their catalog? How does that get you to buy stamps or die cuts? If we could hand-draw the stuff, then we wouldn't need to buy the stamps and dies. Very odd to me. I loved that butterfly, too, and was looking forward to a die.

I think the butterfly is beautiful and SU was using it to advertise the DS paper and the Pretties kit (body of the butterfly)...

I agree... that doesn't make a lot of sense, but if you look really close it does have a couple of imperfections that look like cutting lines. I think it is gorgeous and am thinking about photocopying the cover and making my own template!

I just did an image search of "butterfly" on Yahoo, and was rewarded with a great picture of US swimmer Ryan Lochte, LOL!!! Anyway, there are also tons of butterfly images that you could print out and use for a realistic template.

I just traced it from the computer screen. I can barely draw stick people . I had the PDF catalog open, and zoomed in till it was the size I wanted. What I did was trace it on to a transparency using a sharpie marker (I just traced one half of the butterfly). Then I cut that out and used it as a template to trace it onto a folded piece of cardstock, with the middle of the butterfly against the fold. It worked great. Only thing though, the butterfly comes out a little skinny. I think I'm going to try to widen it. The one on the catalog is kinda folded, with it's wings tipped towards the camera, so you can't trace it like it really is, KWIM?

Anyway, I'm attaching a picture. It definitely needs a little tweaking, but it was very easy. I don't know what to use for the body though, since I don't have the pretties kit. Got any ideas?

Sizzix has 4 or 5 butterfly dies. Perhaps this will be a new one.

Sizzix has lots of dies for butterflies. One of them is a BigZ die that would appear to be the same size as what's on the catalog. I have one and it sure looks the same size to me. You can purchase the die in AC Moore stores. I've never seen the die in Michaels in my area though. Michaels in my area only carry old stock of Sizzix or Cuttlebug items.

On Mel's blog (posted in this thread), she uses a stick pin and pearls from a necklace...it looks very similar to the pretties kit and the colors are really nice.

Thank you! :O) It was so fun! Next time I think I'll try the butterfly layered in two different sizes...
