Default Black Copic Help, please

I have recently tried to color some penguins with various Copics in the W and N series. I was using Neenah Solar White #80 and Impression Obsession Hybrid black ink pad. The stamping was done in the evening and I tried to color the images the next day. I was traveling without a heat tool so they were not heat set.

My coloring seemed to creep out of the lines, no matter how careful I was, and it looked awful. The edges of the image looked fuzzy and not neatly colored. I worked on several images and finally gave up in frustration. The next day I tried coloring an owl on the same set of stamped images but this time using browns from the E series. There was no creeping and everything looked crisp.

Am I doing something wrong when I am coloring with black? The best results were achieved when I colored a base of grey and then went in to do my shading and blending. If you have any advice I would greatly appreciate your help. TIA!

Check Sandy Allnock's blog/website for coloring black. Have you had problems before with that brand of ink and Copics? I haven't used IO ink - only Memento, MFT, SSS, and Catherine Pooler inks with Copics. Maybe heat setting would help.

Sounds like the solvent in the Copics is reactivating the stamped ink. If heat setting doesn't fix the issue, you probably can't use that ink pad with alcohol based markers.

It could be that your marker is a wee bit overfilled. Take both caps off and try to scribble off any extra ink from the nib. Let them sit with the caps off to equalize the barrel pressure.

Thanks, I'll give your suggestions a try.

I am pretty sure IO is suppose to be Copic friendly and it seems to be with the brown ink family. I have not been able to play around, yet to see if there is something with the grey family
