Default Black/African American People Images?

I received an e-mail the other day from someone who was looking for images of African American people. Not necessarily African warriors or artifacts but of just regular people who look more like us Do you have any resources? TIA!!

Hey Stacy,

Your post got me wondering and I did some quick Google searching and didn’t find anything!

There is a definite lack of rubber stamp images that represent African American people. Once in a while you might come across a cute little boy or girl.

A few years ago I found a stamp of two little boys one African American and the other Caucasian. It was from Me and My Big Ideas. I’m not sure if they are still selling stamps. I found some for sale on eBay, the links are too long to post here. If you do a search for MAMBI or me and my big ideas you will see some of the stamps. They are stick figure like kids.

As for stamps of adults, it’s a lot harder to find them. Once in a while a collection will have one image in their collection. But it’s really rare to find images that are not cute. I happen to like the cute ones. Still, it would also be nice to have images that reflect everyday life. Wedding, anniversary, welcome baby, pregnant woman, family, friends and so on.

Certainly would be a nice little niche to fill for someone crafty and artistic.

We have a line of stamps called Kindred Spirits that have a eclectic mix of looks. I wouldn't say that they are any particular race, just regular women like all of us. (There are some kids and men too but the women are the most diverse.)
Check them out here. Kindred Spirits

Thanks for all your replies. Hmmm... it definitely seems like there isn't a whole lot available. I think that stamp companies are missing out on a large audience here. Gina, your stamps are a little closer to what we are looking for but not quite. Definitely closer compared to some of the other companies. I would love to see more stamps that look like me

This image ---> Little Angel was a gift with purchase stamp from The Angel Company a few years ago. She kinda reminds me of my niece. I'd love to see a little girl who looked like me when I was little... with braids or puffy pony tails It would be so neat to find images of little boys that kinda look like my son too.

Wouldn't it be awesome if one of the stamp companies created some images even if only on a trial basis? Maybe a SOTM type deal to test the market? I think they could attract a whole new customer base.

MFT stamps has a line called Who's That Girl and she is good for EVERYONE! Check them out HERE. She is every woman!

Also, one of our design team members did a great tutorial on coloring in different skin tones including African Amercian. You can check that out HERE. I found it REALLY helpful.

You ladies posted some wonderful links here. I understand what Stacy means. its hard to find images of different races doing everyday things. Most images that are labeled as African American are tribal or african dance images with ppl in costume and all. Where as that is my heritage, it isn't my everyday life.

LOL, Stacy! Before I realized this was YOUR post, I was going to refer the poster to YOUR blog! I've always loved the way you take our TAC images and color them with darker skin tones. Just last night I was looking at your wedding cards and the little girl eating ice cream.

Stacy--

I'm always on the lookout for African American stamps for a friend of mine. She recently found these:

http://sunshineandgigglesstamps.blog...stamps_25.html

No one has mentioned the Stamping Bella Ketto stamps yet, either.

Good luck!

LOL, thanks Diane! Yes I do have a few on my blog. I just remembered that TAC has some kiddy stamps that were retired quite a few catties back. I might have to hunt down some retired images

Cute stamps Kim! Thanks for the link.

Stacy, TAC used to have some that included a little girl (putting on shoes?) and a boy lying in the leaves. Babies too! I always thought they looked African-American...

Stamp Francisco has vintage African American images, and more contemporary ones too.

BTW, thanks so much for that Pansy Lane link. I have been looking for a large hamburger stamp like forever!

I like the vintage images best. These two companies have unmounted plates of vintage photos.

Hi Stacy,

Stepping in here to say that I wish there were a few more images as well. I am of mixed race and my children are. My daughter has very curly hair and has already been teased at school (kinder!) and she now thinks that it is not beautiful. It would be nice to have a few more images that were celebrating all the differences.

Thank you to all that posted links of what is out there

Slightly off topic. I understand the point of having no heads on the women but I also find it kind of creepy. JMO

I'm so glad I decided to post this discussion. I was hesitant because I didn't want it to be taken the wrong way, so I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one scratching her head! LOL

I received quite a few private e-mails with links to some images so I wanted to share a couple more sources...

This link was shared with me http://lyndasscrappyplace.blogspot.com/ Such cute designs! You can purchase her digital images from her Etsy store http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=7168270

Here's another cute image http://www.simonsaysstamp.com/servle...DA-WITH/Detail

TAC had a few sets a couple of years back when I hated coloring so I missed out. I'm currently ISO of a few of those retired sets. Here's a link from EBAY that I was able to find. I am not suggesting you purchase this set from this specific seller. I do not know him/her, I'm simply providing the links for a visual reference

This is a great set! It's called Working Women. I was able to locate this set from a fellow demonstrator. I know of another who has a new set available if you're interested. http://cgi.ebay.com/The-Angel-Co-Wor..._trkparms=65:1

Road Trip This set is funny and has some great sentiments!

Here's another link from InStyle stamps http://instylestamps.com/category_62/Retro-Stamps.htm

I'm so glad to see your post. My family is like the United Nations and trying to find images that reflect us has been difficult. Bella, Magnolia, and Dandee is where I have shopped in the past. Also, there is an Art Impressions (front and back) that I just love. This card is shown in my gallery in 3 pictures so you can see what a front and back stamp is all about.

You probably already have the Lyra Skin Tone pencils but if not, Dandee carries them. They have an amazing range and are also great for coloring critters (bears, dogs, etc.).

Thanks again for starting this post and thanks to everyone for adding new companies to my list of favs (not like I need to buy more!).

The "front & back" concept is CUTE!

I have had the Lyra colored pencils on my wishlist for awhile now. Since I've been using Copics a lot lately I've kinda forgotten about them. I'll have to move those to the top of my list
