Okay, I was all set to buy 3 backgrounds this month (Just Jeans, Soft Swirls and Linen). However, I dont have all the colour familes in spots yet. So, although I would love to get 3 backgrounds, I think I would rather have all the inks first. I cant afford to buy everything at once ... do you think its silly to miss out on the background deal so that I can get all my colours first? Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks ladies, you are all so awesome with your answers!
I would get the backgrounds, don't pass up the deal. I don't have all the colors in inks, but I find that the ones I have work just fine. I do have all the markers, so I can color in if I need to. I think you could wait a few months and add ink pads as you put in future orders. Just my two cents....
I'd go for the Backgrounds as well. You can't beat a sale and you never know if they will change some colors in the next big catty....and then you'll need different colors than the ones you are going to get. Does that make sense? I just got the color wheel and had a DOH! moment when it arrived and I realized I'd waited until just before the big catalog comes out and the wheel will change.

There aren't color changes every year, right? So why would the wheel change? I thought last year the wheel was changed for the first time in a while....I could be wrong, I haven't been a stamper for more than 2 years. The color wheel is very near the top of my wishlist!

The changes last year were the first in what, five or six years? Even way back then there were only two changes -- Rocket Red changed to the "truer" Real Red, and Luscious Lime became Creamy Caramel. I'm convinced your purchase of the Color Coach is not in jeopardy, and SERIOUSLY doubt that there would be another color overhaul after the addition of nearly an entire color family's worth of new ones last year!
The reason the new colors were hyped so much is that an overhaul that major had never happened before. Think about it, if we always had to turn around every year or two and make a major purchase of new colors, how on earth would the vast majority of us (both demos and customers) have any money left for STAMPS? ;)

Personally, I'd go for the inks. Just my opinion. If you do decide on the backgrounds, are you sure you want just jeans and linen? They're kind of similar. I'm a more-bang-for-your-buck person, and if it were me, I would get 3 very different backgrounds. That said, I think you'll be happy with whatever you decide.

I would go for the backgrounds, as well, but I have one question for you...do you have a versa mark ink pad (water mark pad)? If you don't, you should get one and if you already do, you are sitting in clover! ;) You can get awesome effects using the background stamps on med to dark colored papers using the watermark ink - you don't need the special colored ink pad to match the cardstock, versamark works on all colors (granted, it doesn't show up much on light colored cs.)
I'd go for the backgrounds, if you for certain know that there's 3 that you have to have. If you're waffling over the 3rd one, then you might as well get the inks instead.
Plus, Stampin' Up keeps us guessing on promos, you never know when inks could be the next promo, not saying it is, especially with retirement time coming up, but still, you never know for sure!
Wow, lol, pretty divided opinions! Maybe you should just flip a coin, because there are valid points either way, kwim? In my house, $8.50 is a pretty substantial incentive. If you REALLY want these backgrounds, and you aren't just picking three to take advantage of the sale, then that's a pretty big savings. (Although, as my dh says way too often..."HOW MUCH am I spending to save that??)
On the other hand buying another set or two of spots will really broaden your options considerably.
That's my dilemma. I'm not sure there are 3 that I want! Is it really worth spending 8.50 on the 3rd one just because..............I don't know. I'd go with the ink.........I can always walk across the street and borrow the stamp from my demo!
I don't think the background sale is that great a deal, either. If you only want one or two bgs, order one and a set of inks! Your tastes may change if you haven't used backgrounds before. Get the best of both worlds. :-)
I'm taking advantage of the bg special because there were 3 I really wanted. But I've passed up specials several times in the past when they've just not held much appeal. I say get the inks because you KNOW you'll use those. And even if they were to go on special in the future, you'll already have used them for a while. But whatever you choose - have fun with your new toys!

I totally agree that the colors probably won't change, but to me it would have made more sense to wait for the new catalog to be sure. Only because it's already close to the time when it will come out. I keep it in mind that people are always asking for new colors from SU. I like the color coach, but I could have waited two months just to be sure. SU could get away with 2-3 new colors a year, in my opinion but I wouldn't like it because they'd probably get rid of my favorite colors...that seems to be my luck.
I would more than likely go for the inks! I have several bg stamps and I just don't use them that much. I rather have the colors and the bgs hands down.

Two or three new colors every year still requires too much product turnover -- remember, in addition to the classic/craft inks and cardstock you have the watercolor crayons, markers, designer papers, eyelets, ribbon (not exact matches but still require tweaking in order to coordinate properly), die-cut boxes and tags, the aforementioned color coach... the list goes on and on! I still say you're worried about nothing and your purchase is safe from being obsolete for a good while longer. ;)

Do you really want at least three BG stamps? If not, go with the inks. I was trying to figure out the three BGs I'd get. Couldn't come up with three that I just had to have so I decided to go with the things I knew I'd use.
