Question Another Postage Question...

I know postage issues have been talked about alot here, but I am hoping for a little more clarification on a couple of things...

1.) Has anyone mailed a card using the new WIDE ribbons??? I LOVE them, but they do make my cards quite "thick" and I'm assuming they won't go through them mail with a regular stamp...any experience with this?

2.) When adding extra postage for a card, do you simply add the extra postage, or do you also write something on the envelope noting that it won't go through the machines they use??

Any help is appreciated!!! :-D

Hi Darce,

I just asked for clarification last week at my post office. Whenever we add a bow (doesn't matter which ribbon) it creates a bump on the card. This causes the postal machines trouble, and the card needs to be hand-posted. So, we must pay an additional $0.17 beyond the current $0.41 postage. The post lady actually sold me some $0.17 stamps and some $0.58 stamps, since I tend to be "guilty" of using bows, brads, etc. a lot.

The p.office workers actually have a little "slot" tool to help them to show us that our stuff is too thick for the machines. (I needed a little convincing I guess.) ;)

Usually it is 17 to have them can cancel a piece of mail. I think you can write a note on the envelope saying, "Please Hand Cancel." But you might want to check with your local P.O. to get their opinion. After reading lots of Post Office issues in these threads, the one thing I have learned is that each P.O. will have a different answer to your question.

Thanks for info...so do you have to indicate on the envelope that it's supposed to be hand-posted?

I use the trick that someone here shared and use the slot on my paper cutter to figure out if something is too thick...when I use that wide ribbon, it doesn't even come close to sliding through that little slot!!!

We can write "Hand Cancel" on the envies to be sure it doesn't go into the machines and cause trouble.

When I give them to the post office lady, she stamps them in red ink ..
Hand Cancel. ;)

I have a copy of the Letter-Size Mail Dimensional Standards Template that the gal at my post office gave me. On it it states the Maximum Thickness is 1/4". It says check the thickness and height standard by sliding the piece through the 1/4-inch slot lengthwise. If the piece does NOT pass through, charge regular postage plus surcharge.
