Ahhh..I feel the transformation......eekkkkkk....
I keep looking at the galleries and how everyone coordinates with the colours. I thought it was silly to have to get SU paper (sorry:oops: ) But the more I look the more I see the sense of it. Plus...I want to do the colour challenges...see...this is how the insanity begins 
More to buy...lol
So is it ethical to "hide" the SU stuff from my dd who is only 16 and does not try to match colours. I mean NO matching...and she uses lots and lots of different colours...bless her heart...
I mean I can use up my huge stash of LCS cardstock that way right?
Come on you enablers....

I let my Girl Scouts (13 and 14) use the crappy stuff I bought first that came in strange combo pacs from ACM. I have gotten some good stuff like Bazzill-but the SU paper cannot be beat for matching. |

Heck yes it's ethical! My girls KNOW not to get into my SU paper. There is a whole cabinet of old cardstock (pre-SU) that they know they can use! |

I have a box of old cardstock that they can use and my oldest son knows not use my SU whisper white cardstock when he needs white paper. I told him specifically where the cheap white cardstock was and he could only use that.

Oh, I'm so glad you came around to "matching"! I also thought in the very beginning (over 8 years ago) that I could get away without using SU's coordinating color system. It lasted about a month. It really does make creating so much easier!!
As for your daughter I say hide all the good stuff! My kids have their own stash of other stuff. They don't seem to mind. Of course the ones that stamp are only ages 9,7, & 5!

Because my dd is so not interested in scrapping or stamping, whenever she asks to use my stuff I let her use whatever her little heart desires. I figure it's only once-in-a-while. Now, if she suddenly caught the bug I'd have to restrict use of the SU paper, I think.;)

My 16yo dd is hilarious...she "scrapbooks and stamps" but it is the funniest thing to watch .
I think she has it in her head to accomplish 2 pages a day. So up she trots with her album...and boom 20 mins later she comes down. DONE. Away goes the album. I have asked her if she gets enjoyment out of it..she says yes..and "it has to be done" She is getting better though. I think in years to come it will be neat to see how she has evolved. And in the end she will have a scrapbooks...I will probably still have boxes of books.
When we stamp she says "hand me a colour", "What colour," I ask, "Doesn't matter, just a colour". She makes me chuckle.
The upside it is one of the few things her and can do together that we don't have issues with. So it is a very good thing

Well, I have 2 boys, so the "pilfering" of my SU cardstock is not an issue, except when there is a "project" due. And when that happens, the cheapo stuff comes out!
But SU is my fave hands down! Nothing matches their quality, color or price IMO!
There is a purpose for the cheapo stuff aside from letting the kids use it; I use it for templates or as a "dry run" for projects. So my "naivete`" purchases from years past are serving some sort of purpose;)

I didn't think I needed SU paper till a friend of my mom gave me all her scraps (she would only use full sheets of paper), and let me tell you I was hooked, the weight and feel alone of this paper had me hooked. My paper is stored in a 4 drawer filing cabinet. The children are not allowed to touch my top 3 drawers (A-L SU paper, M-Y SU paper, All neutral SU papers), but the 4th drawer they can touch (All cheaper cardstock that my mom donated to me when I started stamping). When the kids had thier Family Consumer Sciences class this last year and the teacher needed card stock I went through and pulled her out about 6 inches (no joke) of cheap card stock), and I still have about 18 inches of the cheap stuff left for them to use. I use the cheap stuff also on projects that I know will get torn up right away (for the little treats I send in during the year). My 18 yo is now attending stamping classes with me, so she is allowed to use my *good* card stock, if she asks first..LOL
Horde the good stuff, make them use the cheap stuff. They also know where my GP white is that they can use all they want of, they have been told not to touch my Beckett Expressions whites. :-)

Ethical??? You have a moral obligation to do so....
I agree wioth craftymel, I use the old stuff for templates and 'dry runs'.
I got my Many Marvelous Markers the other day, told 12 yo DD, "these are MINE, they are not for you to use. If I am not at home and you cannot ask to use them, the answer is NO. It will always be NO". I don't even want to share them with my customers! LOL

Approach from a different angle.... that (old non SU!) paper is now hers, for her use only - SPECIAL - and you can't use it! Unless of course maybe you beg! LOL

I should add just for the record that I keep my patterned paper and generic cardstock in wire shelves out in the open... except my SU! paper which is in folders in a special carrying case. Everytime DH says "Hey I borrowed some of your pretty paper for a project I was doing" I PANIC for about 15 seconds until I realize it would have been WAY to much effort for him to get to my "good" paper! LOL...

My kids only get to use my "pre SU" papers and computer paper for their projects. The good stuff is all mine! I bought some cute DP at my LSS a while back for a lunch tin but it was sooo hard for me to put it together b/c it didn't match my paper and ink. I am spoiled now and must have colors that match.

Think about how you treat her for everything else? Do you give your kids the best cuts of steak? or reserve them for adults who will appreciate them? This is absolutely no different! ;)
Besides, if she's 16, she's old enough to be earning her own money. So, if she wants "more", she can pay herself and buy her own SU! cardstock. (she won't waste it that way). It's the same as the "shoe rule" in our house: We'll pay $xx, if you want a more expensive brand, feel free to spend your own money!

How true! She has just got a job and really has more expendable income than me now She was flipping through the catty and wanted the Monkeys (forget the name) I told her now that she was working she was welcome to buy it. She said...Oh...I don't want it that bad...only if you were buying it...lol. |

My kids are younger but they only get the non-SU stuff to stamp or draw on. Then again, it's mainly my 2, almost 3 yo, dd who wants to sit in my room and stamp with me :-) The boys only do it for a specific purpose!

I call it "sharing". Hailey gets my "crappy paper" which to her is just the best, the other stuff is boring. She gets the paper that makes you dizzy to look at and yet, her stuff that she produces is good! Children have no creative blocks/rules. Just go for it she thinks and WOW! So, share away!

Not only do I do it with special paper, but they also know the SU markers are HANDS OFF! I don't know what's worse, going for the marker you need and not having it be there or having the brush end all smoooooshed ... HA ` gret thread!!!
