Where do I find wax paper in Australia?

A couple of times in the past year I've been wanting to buy wax paper but I can't find it anywhere in the supermarket. Today I was looking for it again, and I asked another shopper if she knew where I might get some. She also has not been able to find it for herself for quite some time, and thinks the silicon baking rolls have replaced the wax paper. Is this true?

I jokingly told her that I may need to buy a roll from the US for my crafting purposes, LOL. Any suggestions about where I might be able to buy some locally?

Is there an alternative to using wax paper in the intricate spellbinder dies so the die cut releases more easily from the die? I'd like to join in VSN and one of the supplies needed is wax paper also.:(

You just may have to buy a roll from the U.S.!!

I haven't been able to locate it where I live either, amongst a handful of other items I can't find here! :( I'm not in a large city where the supermarkets are bigger and potentially carry more products. I'm thinking perhaps a bakery / cake decorating supplier? Though there aren't any of those that are local for me either. It's a challenge some times! There are days when I truly miss the simplest of things that I could so easily pick up at shops back in the U.S. but are nowhere to be found here. I'll keep trying and will surely let you know if I find it!!

Misstreez 08-20-2010 05:53 AM

I remember being able to buy it once upon a time. It's such a simple everyday item that was in every kitchen draw at one time. I wonder what else has gone 'missing' from our lives?

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have heard that what we have in the States as wax paper is greaseproof paper in England. Can you get greaseproof paper there?

Metalcharm 08-20-2010 01:45 PM

I also had trouble finding it but did stumble across some in the last year. I am pretty sure it was Woolworths homebrand (nd if not it was certainly bought at a Woolies supermarket) if that's any help.

Do you want me to send you some - could fold some up in an envelope??

We use to be able to get greaseproof and waxpaper. Our greaseproof paper doesn't have the wax coating, which is what I need.

I'm making plans to go to Toowoomba today so I'll go find a Woollies while I'm there. If I have no luck there I'll see if there are any specialty cooking shops that might have it.

I think if I find any I'll buy a couple of rolls of it. The lady I was speaking to at the supermarket said she only has a little bit left and hoards it for when she really needs it. LOL

Diamondz 08-20-2010 02:33 PM

I'm sure I got some woolies home brand wax paper fairly recently too, as it was needed for one of dd's craft kits.

Woolies is starting to look very promising :D

Please keep us informed on the success of your trip to woolies. I realize you may not be back from your trip so I will check late.

No luck with a couple of supermarkets that I went to in Toowoomba. I went to a kithchenware shop for some advice. They gave me a list of a few places to try, catering and cake specialists. I'll give these businesses a call on Monday.

Everyone I talk to knows what I want but noone can remember the last time they ever seen it. One lady even remembered the rainbow coloured wax paper, and then we reminisced about buying bread wrapped in it......

jeannemlehrman 08-21-2010 07:09 AM

Does your breakfast cereal box have a wax paper bag lining?

meluvstampin 08-21-2010 07:44 AM

If you cannot find any let me know. If you pay for the cost of the item and shipping I will buy some and ship it out to you.

sewflake 08-21-2010 09:28 AM

I'm with meluvstampin, I would be happy to ship some out to you. It can even be placed in an envelope (flat) and send 1st class international, that way the cost should not be too high.

fiddlerontheroof 08-21-2010 11:12 AM

Ditto to the two ladies above -- I'd be happy to mail some out to you. The idea of just folding it flat in an envelope is brilliant (and cheap!).

I remember the summer I spent in the UK. ALL I wanted was a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Well, grape jelly is unheard of in the UK (or at least the part I was in) and peanut butter was impossible to find as well. My grandma sent me some. Best PB&J ever.

Mrs Noofy 08-21-2010 12:24 PM

Maybe if we each sent an envelope full of wax paper you would have enough to last a life-time! When do you need it? I would be glad to send some.

No, we don't have that anymore either.

Misstreez 08-21-2010 03:04 PM

Thanks ladies for all the offers to send me some. I'll get in touch with Metalcharm about sending me some. She lives somewhere in my country. so thats a good start.

I rang my mother to ask her to keep a look out for some when she goes shopping. She lives in the city so she may have better luck with finding a roll.

SuG 08-21-2010 05:08 PM

maybe this is foresight to us in the US. Better all run out and stock up. Can you just see the big wigs in the supermarkets scratching their heads trying to figure out why there was a sudden rush on waxed paper :)

I'm sitting here reading this thinking of the two rolls I have down in my kitchen and wondering why in the world can it NOT be found in Australia?? Is there a shortage or is it just not used any more? I don't get curious about a lot of things and its kind of joke between my hubby and I, but after reading this thread, I really want to know why there's no wax paper there!

I too, would be happy to send you some!! good luck

I wanted to know, too, and did a little googling. I haven't found the answer yet, but I did find this comment from Feb 2010 on a blog:

"Freezer Paper is available in Australia at Spotlight stores. It's not avavilable in groceries/supermarkets at in US but try a big craft store, and ask at the counter - you can usually buy a small amount, not an entire roll. "

I don't know what a spotlight store is, but I thought it might help you out.

mtgchic 08-21-2010 07:34 PM

I found this, too: Buy Wax Paper BULK 3 PACK - Supermarket Items - BargainDeals.com.au Australia

Misstreez 08-21-2010 08:49 PM

Thanks everyone for their help. It's a puzzlement to me that the stuff is not so readily available.

I got in contact with some of my friends and family in the city, and my mother found some for me! Yay. I've asked her to buy me a few rolls (@$2.30 ea). One lovely lady, who just happens to live in the small town i've just moved to, has also had trouble finding some also, so I'll give her a roll.

DivaTam 08-22-2010 12:37 AM

It's definitely not as common as it was. I think with people moving to using baking paper, zip lock bags and 'nude' lunches it has gone out of use more. I still have a roll in my kitchen and one in my craft room but it did take me a couple of trips to the supermarket for them to have it in.

heading to the store, better stock up!!!

SuG 08-22-2010 06:14 AM

I can't think of one think I use waxed paper for in the kitchen. I really think it is becoming obsolete in that room. Now the craft room is another story :)

And when the day comes that it can only be found in craft stores thats when it'll get a premium price tag on it.

justwritedesigns 08-22-2010 07:41 AM

How odd! Hard to believe it's getting scarce. I use it all the time. In the kitchen, I cover things going into the microwave. It's really useful for baking. And of course crafting. Also, I always keep a piece of it under my project whenever I'm using glue or adhesives. That way if it goes over the edge, it won't ruin my card by sticking to it and I can get the excess adhesive off. (Adhesives do not stick to wax paper.)

camcas2 08-23-2010 04:12 AM

Just sent you a PM-I am in SA and bought some in Coles supermarket last week! Our local Woolies/Safeway does not have it any more

It's the only thing I use to cover things in the microwave - keeps 'em from splattering and doesn't release any nasty chemicals if it gets too hot, so I don't have to worry if it's actually touching the food.

shazsilverwolf 08-23-2010 08:42 AM

Just a quick comment, Greaseproof Paper in the Uk is not the same as Waxed paper- Greaseproof is more similar to tracing paper. It does not have a waxy coating, so wouldn't produce the same effects as waxed paper.Maybe an on-line supplier?

stamphappy1650 08-23-2010 08:59 AM

I never thought about wax paper being a hard to find item but now that I think about it, it's on the bottom shelf and there is ususally only a couple of rolls. I think I better get a few as backup.

I use it alot more since the information came out about chemical releases from plastics when microwaving (is a micro-wave smaller than a regular wave?) Sorry ... had to say it :)

Others are right that if we have to buy wax paper in the craft stores it's going to cost a bunch because they will make it tiny little sheets in a cute package and refills will not be made available.

GramMcCaul 08-23-2010 09:23 AM

OK - have added waxed paper to the shopping list -- have a full roll but not taking it for granted -- LOL

WAXED PAPER, All Natural Soy Wax, 75 Sq. Feet on eBay (end time 10-Sep-10 00:57:44 BST) from USA)

Did a quick internet search, and here are a few links for waxed paper, both on rolls or in sheet form.:)
Hope these help

Misstreez 08-24-2010 08:58 AM

My mother found some near where she lives. She'll be getting me a couple of rolls. :)

I was thinking the same thing LOL
I not only use it for cutting intricate Nesties and paper quilling, but I also use it in baking

sewflake 08-24-2010 11:14 AM

It has started me thinking too, I need a new roll or wax paper. Going to put it on my shopping list too!! Maybe two or three rolls in case it becomes obsolete....what will be next, aluminum foil??

Metalcharm 08-24-2010 01:52 PM

lol Misstreez is going to be responisble for the world wide panic buying of wax paper! ;-)

Diamondz 08-24-2010 02:19 PM
