What's Up With Upsy Daisy?

I love this stamp set but what is up with the stamp that says "Birthday Celebrations"?

I have asked everyone in my family and all my co-workers and friends this week and no one gets it. Maybe it's not a Virginia thing, lol

It isn't something you can say to someone in place of "Happy Birthday". It sounds like the title of something or the name of a stamp set.

Maybe I can cut off the "s" but then it would still sound wierd to me...

Just saying :)

rsalamon 08-27-2008 06:29 PM

I said the same thing to my husband when I was going through the catalog. I don't get it either! :)

Turkey1969 08-27-2008 07:39 PM

Maybe it's better used as a scrapbook page title - but even so, how often would you put more than one 'celebration' on a page??

beadfreak22 08-27-2008 07:44 PM

Aww, man! And I was liking that set! But now that you point it out, it is totally weird. I'd be tempted to cut it in half and just use the "celebration" part.

austamper 08-27-2008 08:08 PM

I don't know.... I don't see it as weird I guess. I mean, yeah it's not your typical salutation, but... it really didn't bug me. :-P

Phantom 08-27-2008 08:59 PM

Totally weird. I might get it on sale as I love the flowers and I like the idea of separating the words and chopping off the "s." There was a thread recently re: the new catalog called "things that make me go hmmm??..." and it was the first thing that came to mind. A "what were they thinking?" moment.

avajo 08-27-2008 09:22 PM

I never thought it was weird. I always thought of it as meaning , instead of celebrating a birthday ( one birthday celebration/without the s ) as meaning all the DIFFERENT things you do to celebrate ( having cake , opening presents , singing happy birthday , thus celebrations with the s ). So thats what I have always thought of when I've seen that word. Hope I haven't been too confusing.

A lot of SU! sets have weird word or greeting stamps included. I rarely use any of them and have not bought some sets because of them. If they're going to include them in sets, I think they should be more generic...just Happy Birthday, Best Wishes, etc. I love the Embrace Life set, for example, but would NEVER have use for that word stamp! Ick!

I agree with Happy Heart...SU has some weird sentiments and quotations that I just never, ever use.

Unlike Happy Heart, however, that doesn't keep me from buying. If I like the images, I go for it and just never use the sentiments...;)

SU! needs to take lessons from PTI on this one. Their sets come with tons of sentiments and sayings, and I have used almost all of them, unless the occasion never arrises. Haven't had to do any retirement cards, for instance, but heck, that little Happy Retirement stamp in Mixed Messages will come in handy one day! Also, the sentiments in the anniversary set are HUGELY useful. I use them more than the medallion stamps in that set, and those are gorgeous, too.

Commercial for PTI is over now...back to the original post....

GreenDragonLady 08-28-2008 03:30 AM

I thought of it like "birthday greetings" kind of. I didn't really think it was weird.

I guess that works for you and others that agree with you. I personally like what some call "weird" phrases. They are not WEIRD at all to me. I agree with avejo; on my birthday I do many things to celebrate. So it could have a different meaning. It does not seem weird at all to me. I am glad that SU and other companies don't just make the plain phrases for every set. I don't just make cards and other projects for typical holidays/occasions. I am sure there are others that agree and that is why not all stamps are made for just one group of people. I do like the Upsy Daisy set. I think if I purchase it I will separate the words so that I can use them together or separately. More options that way. JMO of course.

meluvstampin 08-28-2008 03:59 AM

It is another way of saying Happy Birthday. It is like, lets celabrate another birthday for you.

jpmayo 08-28-2008 06:37 AM

Now I am more confused by it...

Cathy H 08-28-2008 04:13 PM

OK - now I have about 95 SU sets - maybe 100 or more - and I have TONS of other stamps as well. How many Happy Birthday stamps do I need? I think SU is just trying to give you something you don't already have.

Well maybe that was the plan. Get you confused so you buy it and sort it out after you spend the money. ;)

I think your plan of chopping of the 'S' is great. If that works for you and is less confusing for you; go for it. Once you purchase them they are yours to do with what you want. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks any way. Right? And I saw some beautiful stuff done with the daisy stamp.

R 08-28-2008 05:25 PM

Too funny! I never even noticed a sentiment was included when I ordered the stamp set! Love those daisies!

Oh, I bought it...weeks ago...

I totally agree! I think they try to diversify and sometimes end up with odd sayings. I for one was part of the 'I don't get 'Embrace Life''. To me it sounds like a depression card. BUT, I loved the image sin the set, so I went for it!

Have to agree there.
The sentiment wont ever stop me from buying a stamp, I buy some just becuase I love 1 stamp in the set.

I was just seeing if this saying was just one I hadnt ever heard of before but is commonly used by some.

Hi, Jimmi
I'm in Smithfield!

I have lots of SU sets that have sentiments I never use :
"charm, lovely"-just to name a couple (maybe some people send cards that would use those words, but not me), but I buy the sets because I like the images on the other stamps. Maybe we should gather all those sentiment stamps we don't use and make some word collage cards!

It works great for scrapbook pages. I used it on a page of my grandparents in the mountains when they took a long vacation around the US.

I don't think the birthday celebrations is too bad. I would have preferred it said happy birthday (I already have a ton, but I like different fonts) but I don't think it will keep me from using that stamp.

Actually, I'd prefer it if they didn't put ANY word or sentiment stamps in a set! Having said that, I do like to have plain sentiments in different fonts...formal, plain, fancy, funny, cute, large and small! I think they sometimes throw an unusual one in just to make a set larger.

musicedmom1 08-31-2008 02:05 PM

Maybe it sounds better to use if you have twins, triplets, etc. or if you're celebrating more than one person's birthday at the same time. Just a thought.

cmesinden 08-31-2008 02:31 PM

I have MANY stamp sets but I am still looking to round out my collection of assorted basic phrases in the different font types and sizes. I think there are a few too many sets with "weird" phrases. I also try and remember that there are new stampers coming into our world and they still NEED those basic phrases.

I think SU needs to remember that while satisfying our need for "new" stamps there are new stampers joining our ranks and they will need basics!
