Default Ask Beate Question: Using Soda Cans

I received an email from Sandy regarding this weeks Ask Beate question. I thought I would pass it along:

Quote:

Regarding a question about using metal cans to die cut shapes out of. Be VERY careful these cans can be very dangerous, not only to you but the one receiving the card. It is much safer to purchase the metal sold in craft stores, it can also cut you but much safer to work with - try and crimp over the edges on your design wherever possible.

We here in Oregon pay an deposit on our cans (and bottles) which we get back when we return them to the store. They are reused, recycled by the company. So, because I love the look, I would use something that can't be recycled and would be thrown away anyway. I might have to give in if I can't come up with an alternative.

But you ARE recycling it, in a way...it's being turned into a creative work of art for others to enjoy, instead of being turned into another can.

I also read an article and watched a video
on using the soda cans to sharpen your
dull punches.

In Michigan, our can and bottle deposit is on carbonated beverages only, and there is no deposit on te similarly packaged aluminum cans of iced tea and fruit juices - I don't know your rules in Oregon, but that might be a possible alternative without losing the deposit?
