Which is better, the square punches by CM or SU, for making the 1" or so squares for layering? CM's punch is $20, and you get both sizes. You have to buy 2 separate SU punches to make the layered squares, so it's $14x2, $28. What are the advantages of one versus the other?
I have the CM punches and plan to get the SU ones. If all that you are wanting to do is punch squares, to layer, the CM ones are fine. If you ever want to punch a window in a card it is impossible to use the CM ones. They do not go deep enough on the paper. You need to think about what you want to use them for now and in the future. Don't get me wrong CM has a lot of really good supplies, but their punches are so stiff and hard to use. My hands get sore if I have to do cards for a swap. I have all of them and really don't use them. I have tried sharpening them with aluminum foil and I just gave up. Spend the money and get the good ones. I believe EK makes them specially for SU.
The CM punches are harder to punch. Also, you have to be careful that you don't accidently hit the "other" punch and leave a mark in your paper. On the positive side, it is very easy to align the paper to punch out a mini frame (with a whole in the middle). I love this look for scrapbooking.
since all i use are cm punches...hmm....LOL I have to agree about the making a window thing. Cm punches aren't deep enough to do the trick. However, if your CM punch is breaks or is difficult to punch, you can take it back to your consultant and get a replacement for free.

I love the CM punches for layering. However I agree with Mrs. Zellar--they are harder to punch and if I have to punch more than a couple of times my hands get sore. The SU punches are much easier to use.

I have both now and I would definitely recommend the stampin'Up punches. I found it harder to have them side by side because of the same reasons stated above. What I love about the SU punches is that you can easily turn them upside down and punch them out while looking at where you're punching AND you can do it with one hand. So much easier on the hands. And no waste of paper from the other smaller square or circle.
CM punches are great quality and I can't say anything bad about them other than they are extremely hard to push. I had all of them and sold them when I discovered how much easier the SU punches are to push. So...both being great quality, if you have hand/wrist problems, the SU punches would be worth the little extra money.
Just thought I'd jump on this thread as I posted a similar thread a few days ago. I actually HAVE one of the CM double square punches that I was trying to exchange. I decided it was silly to buy the square punch when it is so easy to cut squares, and I already have a regular square punch, so I've been looking to exchange it for a circle or oval one. Would you like to buy it from me? Then I can get the one I want. Lemme know...
