I was in Dollar Tree last night looking for padded envelopes to send out my DS' birthday invites in, and I found some really cute punches.
This may be old news to all of you, but this was the first time I'd seen them. I'm a new demo and have been trying to avoid buying non-SU stuff that I won't be able to demo.
Since we just finished a beach vacation, the two that I got were a shell and a crab. He was just too cute, with his little pinchers sticking up. I would say that the punched image is about 1/2" square, approximately. These are "box" punches, not handheld. They had others, including an adorable little train engine. For $1, I decided "what the heck?" Who cares if I can't demo it?
Penny,
At my local Dollar Tree, there was a flier up with a recall notice on the dollar punches, saying that the loose pieces may break and be a choking hazard to children. Of course, this was a few months back so they could have changed the design.
They had the same flier up that referred to twin-pack punches, but these were not mentioned. I am hoping/assuming these are OK - they are by a totally different company and come in singles, not twin packs.
I have both of the one's you talked about (Crab and shell) plus a few other's and i really like them except that they a Hard to use.. I end up with a very sore thumb if i use if very much at all...

When I see things like this all I can think is "What crazy fool is going to let her child suck on her paper punches?" Of course kids will be kids.

Try turning them upside down so that you have a larger area to press on (the base of the punch). Seriously...I have freaky wrists and doing it any other way kills me!
I'm glad the dollar store punches worked for someone, mine lasted long enough to test them on the store receipt before purchasing a set for my SIL. The one never worked again and the other one was to hard to use. I pitched that dollar in the trash can. They were the Miss Elizabeth brand. Is it the same brand name?
I've never had luck with Dollar Store punches either - they're fine for copy weight paper, but anything heavier and I want to hurl them across the room. Just my .02 - hope they work out better for you!
For those of you that use those punches and don't want to hurt your fingers, there is a company I'm sure you have heard of...LTD commodities. I haven't seen a catalog lately but they used to have a handle contraption that you put the punches in and squeeze. You can use your whole hand instead of just your thumb.
Nothing here about the Dollar Tree punches, but when I use some of my harder to use punches, I turn them over and use my foot to do the pushing...works pretty well and my hand doesn't hurt!

I got the crab punch yesterday and tried to punch with it this morning. No luck will not go thru cardstock and barely goes thru regular paper. I did get some "photo tumblers" that the bottom comes off and you can stamp or whatever on the insert.
One of our dollar stores has great stickers and stuff for scrapbooking, and I always miss it! When I go to crop nights, I'm always noticing new stuff, and so many times they say 'dollar store find!' I guess I'm not on the ball enough to make it there in time!!!! LOL
Just a thought for the punches that are hard to punch (but do still actually work), try punching out some wax paper with them to ease their punching ability, and if they are too dull, punching through aluminum foil is supposed to help sharpen them. To try to get in on the good buys, call or ask them next time you're in the store when they get their deliveries. They are usually glad to tell you and you can be the one to get the good finds.
