Default Embossing

Can I use a hairdryer at a low / hot setting to melt the embossing powder?

subscribing... don't have a heat tool and have an under-utilized blow dryer!

I don't think so. I remember tyring this a while back and my blow dryer didn't do the trick.

No -- the heat is not hot enough or direct enough. It will, however, blow the powder off your image and make a big mess. A heat gun is the best investment ever.

If you are looking for a substitute for a heat gun in a pinch, these will work:

Hold it over the burner on your electric stove - not too close and use tongs or something so you don't burn your fingers

Hold it over an electric light bulb - again, be careful not to burn your fingers and don't look directly into the light.

Set your oven temp to 260 and put your card on a cookie sheet that you use for crafts only and let the powder melt in the oven.

If your toaster will stay down without bread in it, you can hold the piece over the hot toaster.

A candle will work, but it's wayyy tricky to keep from starting your paper on fire.

Just a few times using these alternate methods and you'll see that a heat gun is a great investment.

I bought my Marvy heat gun for about $22. at a local store, you can find other good brands & prices of course. It's so worth it if you're interested in embossing or crafting, but DH has used it for a few of his DIY around the house projects also.

cbet has the goods--before I has my heat tool I tried all kinds of things, including the hair dryer, which didn't work well at all! My favorite was to hold the paper over my toaster with tweezers, and the next best was over a burner on low on the stove, just be careful!!

I've also heard of some people using the heat from their iron to heat emboss. I've never done it though, I have a heat gun ...
