Default In desperate need: Empty spools for ribbon

Hi all. I've seen some of the threads recently on ribbon storage, and have been inspired to make myself a ribbon storage box. My DH is out in the garage drilling holes in my plastic sterilite container as we speak.

I have several kinds of ribbon that are wrapped around flat pieces of cardboard. I need empty spools that I can wrap the ribbon around, so that it can come out of the holes in my storage box properly.

Where can I find empty cardboard or plastic spools for my ribbon? Anyone have any they need to get rid of??

I have no idea where to even look for empty spools. Do they exist?

Thanks
Kim

Thanks Amanda. Just PM'd you.

I could use as many as people have to give. Probably 20 or so. Can I just say...I will never buy ribbon wrapped around flat cardboard again. Why didn't this issue occur to me as I was planning to make the ribbon holder?? Oh well. The best laid plans....right? ;)

Do you have a store near you like JoAnn's that carries ribbon by the yard? I've gotten empty ones from them before. I went to the counter where they cut fabric and they just gave me their empty ones they were going to throw out.

Debbie-

I did think of that, but had no success. I actually was hoping they just had a package of plastic ones I could go buy today (since I'm in the middle of this project and have ribbon everywhere. Cat keeps trying to attack the ribbon and run off with it. You get the picture)

I called both Joanns and Hancock Fabrics before posting here. They said they did not have any empty ones laying around. I asked them if they could save some for me. Joanns said they would if they remembered to. The girl I talked to sounded a little confused by my request, so I don't think I'll hold my breath on that one.

But, thanks for the suggestion! (There goes Max with another piece of ribbon....)

This might sound silly, but I use empty cardboard tp rolls for all my ribbon. In SoCal we have an awesme ribbon store - Fabric Barn - and I buy a ton of ribbon by the yard. The tp rolls work great!

Ok I have the same problem with ribbon storage. Not enough rolls and too much ribbon. When you max out on ribbon spools can my name be added to this ribbon spool list!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Me too... Any loose ribbon i have bought goes onto tp rolls or paper towel tubes. they hold lots and are really easy to fit in the box....

I've also gotten empty rolls from fabric and craft stores. In a pinch until you get some true ribbons spools, I've taken an empty paper towel cardboard tube and cut to various widths and wrapped the ribbon around them. It's not the best solution but may work until you can get more ribbon spools.

Thumbs up Empty ribbon spools

Please please please add me to that list. I have hunted everywhere and can find nothing. I have just set up an entire room for my scrapping and 3 quests (mostly relatives) and my little cardboard holders do not work any longer. Would like to put the ribbon back on the spools. Thanks so much in advance.

You could easily make some with a cardboard tube with the ends slit so they bend and then glue the end slits to cardboard discs with holes cut in the middle the size of your tube. Would work until you get "real' ones...

I made my own spools with toilet issue rolls and chip board circles. I cut down the tubes and glued on the circles to the end. (I punched a circle in the middle of the circle)

I too have used empty paper towel tubes. I tend to like them better that TP rolls because they are narrower around and because they are longer I can store more ribbon on each one. I just add a strip of re-positional tape down the tube then I can add ribbon as needed. You can then use dowels and 3M hooks to hang your ribbon where ever you want. You could probably even put the tape directly on the dowel and roll ribbon onto it without a cardboard tube of any kind.

Default ribbon spools

Hi, I am also looking for some empty ribbon spools. I would be happy to pay for shipping. Does anyone have some that need a new home? Thanks!

Oh wow. And my DH thinks I am crazy for saving empties when I have them! Unfortunately right now I dont. Sorry :( But I do feel vindicated now! lol

One note: the center holes are different sizes and they will sit differently on a dowel if that is your plan. I had trouble with that. You could fix it by making sides. You cant fix different diameters so easily though.

Another thought would be empty rolls from your gift wrap ribbon for the future-ask friends and family since most people have those. And old thread spools you could make ends for-you can drill the center hole bigger. If you go to a garage sale maybe you can find some super cheap rolls of something you wont mind dumping just to get to the holder.

If you have the moxy...go in a dept store to the gift wrap dept and ask them if they have any ribbon empties.

It is an interesting Q...the storage specialists should see this and stock empty rolls! Or maybe someone should start a business lol.

I guess I will be saving my t-tissue rolls since I have been orgainizing ribbons in my new organizer
Craft Mates Ezy Stack Ribbon Rack Organizer - Walmart.com

I love these organizers; I put the name of the SU ribbon on our side of container, taped or glued to spot. this container has dividers that can be removed for thick/wide ribbon. I pick them up at my walmart store and no shipping. Walmart stores even have searches from different sites that don't charge you for shipping; as long as it comes up in the walmart search engine to order

Hmmm I bought a cheaper made version of that at the dollar store and used it awhile. I like my swing arm pants hangers.
