Default SU makes the Oprah Winfrey Show!!!!

I just saw SU on Oprah!!!!! This week, Oprah is doing a series called The Great Debt Diet. It features families in financial distress and puts them on a program to reduce their debt.
This one family is over $100,000 in debt. Today, they were highlighting their addictive spending habits. The daughter had 60 pr. of jeans ($70 ea.) and 30 Victoria Secret bras ($30 ea.). The mother is addicted to crafts and said she had $1000.00 of scrapbooking stuff alone. As she said this, the camera zoomed in on her SU stamps!!!!
If Oprah only knew how much stuff we all have, she'd probably just do a show devoted to us!

I saw that too and also thought "That's not a lot"! Then I started feeling guilty!! Told my bf about it and he said "Well, you have to live life, and that makes you happy". WHEW!

I guess, though, if it's not something you're using, $1000 IS a lot.

I saw the commercial and I thought I should probably watch that show. I'm glad I didn't! I know I spent way more than that on my scrapbook/stampin stuff. I'm sure I will spend more.

Man I wouldn't be worrying over $1000 worth of craft stuff - I'd be freaking out over the $900 worth of bras and $4200 worth of jeans! (I havent' spent that much on clothes in my whole life! - well maybe for everything - let alone 2 types of things!!)

ONLY $1000? Poor thing. I guess the difference is they are $100,000 in debt, if I was that much in debt I sure wouldn't be buying stamp stuff. My DH says as long as don't spend money we need for food or bills I can get what I want.

Do you think she might be embarassed and fudging a little (!) on the cost of her supplies?? It doesn't take long to ring up $1000 worth of art supplies. Which seems to be a small matter compared to $100,000 debt!!!!! How do they sleep at night???

I watched that too, but missed seeing the stamps. That lady was a trip. I think she just threw out a number for the value of her supplies. I'm sure she didn't add it up. She really had no idea what anything cost.
I found it amazing how much the two families spent on eating out. We almost never eat out (except my son who works 3pm-10pm at a mall). I guess that's why I can afford to buy stamps.
I don't think you fail the debt diet if you can pay in cash for your stamps. Now that I'm paying for college, I'm not so sure.

Ok, I have over $1000 in stamp sets alone (my husband doesn't read this board!), and my collection is nothing compared to what others on this board has I have a feeling stamps are her only problem!

Considering that on yesterday's show (I think) she was thinking up ways to "cheat" on the spending plan, I wouldn't be at all surprised if she was fudging on the craft expenditures as well. I saw the footage of her shopping -- she goes to the nice yarn shops, where most decent yarns are between $6 and $10 for a 50g ball. Fifty grams of yarn usually doesn't go very far, so I'll bet she easily dropped $75 to $100 per trip.

Maybe it's my own bias but I feel 100,000 in debt. At least she has a good supply of scrapbooking materials. What I would be worried about is the other $90,000.

I know I don't have $600 CAN in SU supplies because that is my budget for the year and last year I had to take money out of my fun budget for other things. However, I also scrapbooked for 6 years. I'm sure if I went through all my cardstock/magazines/embellishments/templates/stickers/etc I would definately be over $1000 CAN/probably US as well.

This is just too funny...I can't go by any craft store without stopping!! I was just looking at all of my supplies and thought of all of money that it's all worth!! I should contact my insurance agent and put a rider on our homeowners policy...LOL What am I going to do with all of these supplies? I even have bought something, brought it home only to realize and find out that I have it already!! No wonder it caught my eye!! Thanks Ladies for bringing a smile to my face this morning. It makes me feel better that I am not the only one that's addicted to stampin' and scrappin' supplies.

:big grin:s and hugs, Joanne

I saw this yesterday too and thought only 1000 dollars please thats nothing. But it looked like she had more than that. I can easily spend that in a month but I don't have 4000 dollars worth of pants, 77 shirts, and 30 bras hanging in my closet either. Thats crazy her one daughter with 77 shirts, just t-shirts.

Darn! I was supposed to be recording the show for my brother . . . and I forgot. I agree, if you are that in debt then you should not be spending money on such things.

I wish I saw that episode!

I missed whether the $170,000 in debt included their mortgage? If it did, then I personally don't think they're in bad shape (some people have $200-300,000+ in mortgage debt alone!) and she should be able to spend on her hobby! : ) Just my 2 cents!!! ; )

I didn't see the whole thing either. It was at least 4 shows long, so it was hard to catch all of it. I'm usually starting dinner during Oprah.
However, I suspect it does not include their mortgage. You're right- most people have a significant mortgage. This lady was getting advances on her credit card, I think they said. She had so much charged that if she paid $500, she was just paying interest. It amounted to 120%, I think they said. So, I'm guessing her credit card debt was huge. We have a mortgage, and a home equity line to pay for college, but I'm happy to say I pay my credit card in full each month. That is how people get so behind. They say kids are coming out of college these days with $10,000 in cc debt. Yikes!

Okay I don't feel so bad. I do have some credit card debt to pay off but all my bills are paid ontime or early and my car is paid off. I would be better off but hubby had to file for disability last year and went 9 mths with no income on his side and we paid off $7000 in medical bills from last year alone. I am just glad that thru all that I was never late on anything whatsoever. Yeah I spent a bit on scrapbooking supplies but it kept me sane thru his being hospitalized 4 times last year...45 days total and having 2 surgeries. It was not a good year. But I retained my sanity thank goodness. Thank you Stampin Up for assisting with that. When the going gets tough I get STAMPIN!

Heck one of my sewing machines alone is worth 3,000. I have a room full of stamping, sewing, and all kinds of other crafting hobbies. BUT we have zero debt! Our retirement house is paid for (DH retires in 8 years from Air Force), cars are paid for, and we pay our credit card every month ... I have never paid interest on my card.

I wrote articles about saving money for a couple years. In my opinion most people that say they want to be debt free, don't really want to do the necessary steps involved. I was a tight wad from the beginning straight out of high school!

Okay, but you outgrow jeans and bras...never stamps, embellis or paper goods. Doesn't matter what size you are, you can always scrap and stamp!

No no no. They shrink in the wash! Or at least that's what I've been telling myself.

You are absolutely right. They do shrink in the wash. I even hang mine to dry, so it happens in the washer.

Ummmm, ya! At least that much. They should count graduate school loans, etc. and see what they get. Much more than that!!
