I have ordered a set of 60 Faber-Castell oil based pencils. A Christmas gift from my husband. If someone has already used these, can you tell me what kind of paper I should use. I am planning on blending them with Gemsol.
I am so excited to be getting these, not to mention the hundred pencils I already have. I would appreciate any help.
I find oil based pencils work ok on most card stock. I use mine with baby oil and have never had anything come thru the other side or show any type of film on the card stock. Used both fine and heavy cardstock and buy whatever is going.
yes I use baby oil to blend colours or to smooth one colour out. I use blending stumps, link for a good site here Drawing Supplies | Drawing and Coloring . i just buy the cheapest i can find, they work well and use really fine sanding paper to rub off any colour absorber by the stump and to resharpen the end of the stump. they are like a pencil shape but really really tightly wound paper. i use a small container with a couple of off cuts of felt in it and just squirt the baby oil into it. it soaks into the felt. then you just push the tip of the stump into the felt. you can see the baby oil soaking into the stump and can feel the oil on there when you blend your colours. the wonderful think is you never see any oil on the back of the image and it does a wonderful job. when finished i just put a lid on the container and reuse whenever. rarely have to top up the baby oil in the felt.
Oooh lucky you - I got a couple of Walnut Hollow oil-based pencils in a mixed batch that was mostly wax-based (Prsimacolor type) and they're lovely! I agree they'll work on just about any paper, just test on a scrap if it's a new one and you're unsure.
A lot of people who don't like to work with mineral spirits such as Gamsol use baby oil instead - it works basically the same way and Ailhelen has given you some really useful info there.
Welcome to Splitcoast!! I used the Polychromos pencils in this video - you'll love them! Some more tips on blending in there too. I like cardstock with a little tooth or texture - Bristol is nice.
Dear Ailhelen, thank you for taking the time to give me all that wonderful information. I promised my husband that I would not use them until Xmas. Not sure if I can keep that promise because I am anxious to use them as soon as they arrive. Have a wonderful Holiday.
I was just talking to a guy in the art shop near work yesterday morning. He's a big fan of Polychromos - he said that when he was living in Canada and could only get Derwent or Prisma, he ended up asking friends to send him Polychromos .
I'm sure you'll enjoy them.
I know you said you're planning to use Gamsol, but I like using the Derwent blender pencil when I need to blend mine:Amazon.com : Derwent Blender and Burnisher Pencil Set (2301774) : Wood Colored Pencils : Office Products
