Default Regular, Jumbo or No Wheels??

So, I got this big box of someones old SU! stuff given to me about 2 months ago. It included a couple of wheels, ink and a handle. The handle is the regular size handle with pink passion, eggplant envy, handsome hunter and certainly celery ink cartridges. The 3 wheels were all party type wheels with cupcakes and balloons, I sold the one called "confetti balloons" and the "party" one but kept "confetti streamers" since it looked pretty versatile. I added Daisy Field to my collection last month. (this should give you my wheel history;))

My problem is that I have yet to find one card that I have needed or wanted to use any wheel with so I am wondering if I am not a "wheel person" or I am not being creative enough or what.

I see alot of cute things in the catty and the gallery using the wheels and it makes me want to buy them but I know they won't get used.

I do like a lot of the Jumbo wheels in the catty more than the regular ones so maybe I would use them if I switched over to Jumbos?? But then I need a new handle and cartridges, what to do?
What do you use more often? The standard size wheel or the Jumbo or would you say I should go "wheel free", maybe they arent for me.

Thanks for your answers.

Do I talk too much?

I just use the standard wheels and I wouldn't say I love them but I use them from time to time.

I have several small wheels. I rarely use them and am too cheap to ever invest in the large ones. If there was some way not to buy the handles, inks and wheels each time I would feel better about it. For now just the small wheels for this cheap girl.

I didn't use my wheels much at all until I got a jumbo wheel. It was SO MUCH EASIER to use than the standard wheels! Now I use both sizes, but prefer the jumbo for sure.

I don't always think of the wheels first, either, but here are some ways I use them a lot:

- If I want envelope liners, a coordinating wheel makes it a snap to make the paper.

- If I want a border along the bottom or side edge of a card front.

- If I want a strip of paper across the card to anchor the focal point.

- They are a quick way to decorate gift wrap and gift bags.

- they are almost as quick to use as a background stamp.

- They are easy to clean...just pop them out and rinse under the faucet!

Like I said, though, it wasn't until I got a jumbo wheel and played with it that I got more comfortable with wheels.

I have both Jumbo and standard. I go through stages where I use my jumbo wheels but not my standard, and then I use my standard and not my jumbo and then I don't use either. I think I prefer the jumbo though. I just like how it covers more of the page quicker. O.k. that totally made no sense. lol

Jumbo wheels are nice because they can actually be used as the focal point of your card, which makes a quick, easy card. I have a Christmas card that is ... well, I'll just link to it instead of trying to describe it! lol

I didn't want to get into buying all the ink cartridges so I haven't bought any wheels.....yet. My SU demo used the wheel on a regular ink pad and it was just enough ink to line a card! Any thing over 5 1/2 inches and you will run out of ink.

I love both sizes of wheels. I use them like Betsy suggested above. I have a direct sales branch and when I send out envelopes, prizes or packages, I love to wheel up the outside of it. And if you're making wrapping paper or matching tissue paper - wheels cannot be beat! I'm very into coordinating everything, so that might be why I like them too - use on a card, envelope, packaging, etc.

I do buy the color cartridges, but people on SCS say you can just wheel across a regular ink pad and so you don't feel like you *need* to buy all the cartridge colors.

I LOVE my jumbo wheels!!! They make such a quick and easy background and the ones in the current catty are awesome! They are much easier to use then the smaller wheels. It has a larger surface area so you don't get the rocking you can get with the smaller wheels. My customers love them too!!!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE all the wheels. I have soooo many and they do get used all the time. I personally do not like inking my wheel on a pad because as a scrapbooker I need continuous ink. That is why I am so glad that SU has them available in all 48 colors for regular wheels and 24 colors for jumbo wheels. I have ALL the ink and they also get used all the time. Good luck with your decision. I would have to say that you cannot go wrong with whatever size wheel you choose.

I don't have any wheels, but if I were to invest, I think I would go for the Jumbo wheels. There are a few that I think are really cute - like Wash Day, Barnyard, etc.

Smile both...

I have both kinds of wheels and like them a great deal. I have been on a recent non-wheel slump and was thinking I didn't use them enough. Well, like blueflower above who posted a card ( I have a similar one in my gallery) I thought I'd post a few cards I have made with wheels and found I use them way more than I thought I did. I have even done a few scrapbook pages with them.
The blue leaves are fine foliage jumbo wheel (retired)

And the dragonfly wheel done for a scrapbook page.

I don't have a lot of cartriges and mostly use my ink pads and even spots if that's the color I need to ink up with. Someone else said if you need to wheel a longer than card size space that craft ink stays wet longer.
Hope that helps a little

I like the wheels, but I don't like the expense. It seems inexpensive at first, but ink cartridges add up fast.

Annie - try the above ink trick - just use your ink pad. I have stopped buying the ink cartridges and just use my ink pad but it only goes 5 1/2 inches as stated above.

LOVE my wheels - standard or jumbo!

I have both and use both - I LOVE my jumbo wheels - great for making backgrounds and just cards (roll on to a 2" strip, color and slap on a card)...

If you are doing cards you don't need every color ink cartridge - you can ink up the wheel on a pad...

I have a handful of smaller ink cartridges to coordinate with the wheels I have that I might use for things other than a card...(like for example I have the snowflake wheel so I bought a blue ink cartridge, a heart wheel - I bought a red cartridge)

The larger wheels I have I seem to buy the ones that are easily colored in (hoolyhock, butterfly, etc...) so I usually use my black cartidge...

I love both size wheels, but the Jumbos are my favorite for saving time. Both size wheels are great for making matching envelopes for cards.

Thanks for all the tips! I have heard that you can wheel right across the ink pads so I will try that!
Does this work for the Jumbo wheels as well?

I am so in love with those 2 Jumbo's that go with Simply Said that I think maybe trading/selling my standard wheel stuff and buying the Jumbo stuff might be the way to go!
Keep the great ideas coming (have to go to lunch but i'll get back to "work" when I get back;))!

I'm sorta wheel "impaired" myself. I have a few that have never touched ink. That said, I just bought a jumbo on - Spot On - and I love it. I use it more like a background stamp, but it's great for non-card sized stuff, like boxes or longer cards. I've thought the same as you about the Simply Said wheels - and I don't even have Simply Said. I think those wheels could stand alone easily - I've actually seen a few very cute cards done this way.
So, I guess what I'm saying is - maybe try a jumbo one and see what you think!

I have a few of the regular wheels and don't use them. I even got the wheel guide in hopes that I would use the wheels more. Now the wheels and the wheel guide go un-used. I have not allowed myself to get the jumbo wheels since I don't use the regular ones, but I think jumbo wheels work better (are easier) for making backgrounds on cards.

I only use the jumbo wheels...I found the small ones much too hard...they rock and I would always end up with ink along the edge of the wheel, where it wasnt' supposed to be!

I also only use my inkpads for ink, as I don't need continuous ink...once around is enough for me! lol

Here are some examples of me using the jumbo wheels as focal points for cards...

I love wheels period, but I think I like the jumbo ones the most. I do have a better method of applying them, the clearsnap stampress, just roll the paper through the stampress and out comes your designed border. Very cool. It does both large and small wheels and I got an excellent deal on ebay for it. Less than half price. Very cool. I am very choosie about my wheels though, so I don't have any left that I don't use.

I love my wheels, but I have unmounted them because I just couldn't get it right! I do much better now, and reach for them more often.

I did the same thing - and you're right, now both teh wheels and the wheel guide just sit! I keep looking at the beautiful cards made with wheels and want to get more, but know they will probably sit with the ones I already have! Maybe I just need to go over to the gallery and see what you all have created with the wheels i already own and get re-inspired!

I've only been using SU products for a year or so and have only puchased two wheels. My first was a standard and I found it somewhat difficult, but this summer I bought the jumbo Basic Outline to go with Bud Basics and I love it! I think it's easier to handle. (Pardon the pun!) Now I plan buy two jumbos for backgrounds, Speckled and Rough Texture.

I love both.
I work in a hospital blood bank and all units go out in a paper bag, so I brought in my wheels to make seasonal bags. The patients love it. Bet that's a little different use of them!!

I used to always get frustrated with the regular sized wheels because I couldn't get them to stamp evenly. (I didn't have the wheel guide.) But now that I've tried the jumbos I'm a total convert! I love them and in the last few months I've purchased 5 of them. I use them all the time!

The new background-type ones in the catty (Rough Around the Edges, Rough Texture, etc) are quicker than using a big background stamp, and half the price! And I too use the ink pad for inking. I only have a jumbo cartridge in black.

I have the regular wheels, and use them from time to time...it depends on the project that I am working on. (I have been stamping for 6 years now.) The wheel guide was a great tool for me because I could never get the wheel straight, so that was a plus. The jumbos are nice, but I really don't believe that I would use them enough to make the investment....too cheap I guess.

I love the wheels but won't waste my money on the cartridges. Most people I know just roll them over their pads.

I will be unmounting my wheels - I think I will definitely use them more and won't need the extra ink cartridges! I'm just trying to get thru unmounting my stamp sets first.....

I have a bunch of the regular size wheels and never use them - too frustrating. I've experienced the same problem Sara mentioned about getting ink along the edges of the wheel and having to throw out the whole project. But I'm so glad you started this thread...from reading about the ease of rolling the jumbos, I'm going to go ahead and risk buying one and giving it a try. Linda

I only have regular wheels but I don't use them very often. Most of the time I use a background stamp.

I love my wheels. The jumbo are just wonderful. I no longer buy ink cartridges. I use them as background stamps most of the time... they are a lot cheaper.
