Default 'Stealing' cards

I was just wondering what the done thing is about 'stealing' a card design from the gallery (is this called casing, or is that something else?)
Should you email the original designer and ask if they mind, or do you just go ahead and post your own card, but give credit to the original?

When I CASE a card, I always give credit and a link to the card of inspiration.

I don't think anyone on this forum minds someone CASEing if there is credit given and the card is not submitted for publication. I think it's flattering when someone CASEs a card of mine!

I agree..CASEing happens all the time. When I CASE and post on my blog (or here in the gallery) I always give credit to the original card or project. Then I will PM or email the original owner and send them a link.

CASEing is the best way to learn how to do layout and color, I think. Always give credit and maybe PM the original artist to let her know.

I only think it's "stealing" if you use their picture as your own!

If I use a card as inspiration, I always say I was copying another card. If I remember whose card it was, I give credit by name, sometimes I'll just say "cased from a card in the gallery".

It's not stealing, it's totally fine, encouraged, and flattering to the original designer!

If you upload the card to your gallery, it's good ettiquette to give credit to the designer in your picture comments and linking to their card is nice, too.

Personally, I always try to pm the person just to let them know that I loved their card and case'd them, it's very flattering to hear! You don't have to, but I feel like they took the time to share, so I should take the time to thank them!

BTW, CASEing stands for Copy And Steal Everything --not sure where I heard this, but obviously, you don't REALLY want to "steal" stampers' designs. Giving credit is always the nice fair thing to do.

Just my 2cents:

My definition of CASE has always been Copy And SHARE Everything -keyword is Share.

I think if you find inspiration in a card:
1) you should give credit to the originator ... mention them by name, a link, etc.
2) you should try to find a way to "make it your own" ... change up a ribbon, brad, prima, etc ... or find a way to add your unique idea to it. This is the way you'll grow as a stamper and artist.
3) let the person know. Personally, I love it when stampers let me know they're using my design for their projects.

I think the "Golden Rule" is good here .... treat others as you would like to be treated.

It's not stealing as long as you do a few things IMHO. I personelly don't CASE, but I dont mind if my cards (off my blog) are CASEd as long as the person, emails me, links to my card and does not try to get it published or take it for their own.

I've always thought of it as "copy and selectively edit". Since I generally CASE cards as pretty much exact replicas, but of course don't have the "exact" paper or ribbon- so those things are "selectively editted"

I think a lot of us are "guilty" (not that I think of it as guilt) of CASEing others' designs... it's sometimes what gets us going again!

When I borrow a design or idea from someone, I always give credit when I post it in the gallery or on my blog.

If I don't recall where I got the idea, I will say that as well... a few times the person who's card I CASEd has left a comment to ask if it was such and such card of theirs... and if it is, I go in and amend my post to give credit.

I figure that if I post a card I am welcoming other people to use the ideas.

When I copy an idea or layout, I try to leave a comment. Almost everyone loves hearing that someone liked their card well enough to CASE it

I love scs as a source of inspiration! I really wish I knew how to credit those who inspire me better. Before creating something I often browse through dozens of projects and when I am charged up I head to my stamp room and create. I don't really copy cards but I may get inspired by a pleasing colour combo, or the use of an accessory or a general layout....by the time I'm done I have no idea what came from where though. Any suggestions?

Another thing to be aware of when you are looking at cards and find one to CASE is to check the keywords. Was the card part of a challenge? If they are, you may want to read what the original challenge was and if your card still fits the challenge then add the same keyword to your card. That way the challenge gets credit as well as the designer.

I know that rather than CASEing cards I MOSTLY just look to sketch challenges for inspiration anymore. That being said....the weekly challenge I do with my friends today was to CASE a card from the SU! Catty, so I do still CASE on occasion

I have to say I have been known to print or take screen shots of things that inspire me - Don't know if you can print directly from the gallery (haven't worked out the gallery yet) but you probably could print the picture and just jot down the details/keywords.

When I want to be able to refer back to a card design I always save it to my SCS favorites. It makes it easy for me to go back and see who to give credit to.

I think this may be pretty common...I do it too. Or I may spend an evening in front of the computer, just browsing and then later down the road I have an "idea" that maybe was lingering in the back of my mind. In those instances, I'm not sure if it's original anymore or CASEd. KWIM?

I like this definition a lot! Thanks, too, for discussing the overall issue in this thread. I'm still kinda new to all of this, and I've been wondering what "CASED" meant to different people.

Is there a place on SCS where you can add favourite scs stuff to. I can't see it. This would be great. I often just print or save the picture of the card and note that it comes from scs but mostly I forget to ever go and look at these again.

that's exactly what I mean! I never really intend to case a card usually my projects are compilations of inspiration from all over the place plus my own touches. I do favourite a lot of things and try to comment to people when I fave them but, looking back I can't really figure out which cards might have 'spawned' my ideas. I could have seen them months ago...it's really hard to know the line between a case and an original creation...is there such a thing anymore??

CASE'ing is Copy and Share Everything. As a demo, I was given this information from Stampin' Up! I find it very flattering when I am cased.

This is such a sharing community! I am flattered when someone is inspired by my designs, sometimes I don't get credit but honestly I think it's just because they don't know ant better and they are not being malicious. I always give credit, I love to send stampers over to Beate's tutorials if I have posted something on another gallery that was inspired by a tutorial. BTW there are very few totally new ideas, we learn techniques form each other than make them our own, that's why there is so much incredible art out there. That is also why much of it is similar. Keep inspiring, and don't forget to give credit where it is due!

If you are able to post comments in the forums, then you should be able to create a Favorites gallery. When you are looking at the page of a card, under the listing of supplies there is a row of commands (in gray type) including "Add to Favorites Post A Comment Report Photo ...". If you click on Add to Favorites, then it is added to your My Favorites Gallery. Now, to see the cards that you've added to your gallery, then you have to be logged into SCS. If you click on the Gallery link at the top, then above the "Welcome, <username>" line will be links to "My Gallery, My Albums, My Favorites."

Does this make sense? I hope it helps you!

Kitkate, to answer your question, there is a button that says Add to Favorites right below where it says Keywords (when you're viewing a card in the gallery). Click that button and the image and info is saved to your Favorites file.

To view your Favorities, look at the top of the screen, a little bit above the card image, there's a link that says My Favorites. Click that, and there's the card(s) you saved!

It's a great feature.

Hope that helps.

One good way to make sure that you have the name of the stamper to credit is to save the picture of the card with their name--either in your faves or on your computer . You just right click on the image and choose "save as" splitcoast automatically adds their username to the file name so you can just refer back to that. I save files on my computer titled "layout," "ribbon use," "technique" etc... :0)

I'm so glad to see this thread. I have been inspired by so many from this site and wondered if it was cool to re-create. I wanted to be sure to never offend anyone. I did assume (rightly and justly) that done of my recreations should be sent in for to publications or for contests, thanks for that info! I have learned so much from everyone here and I'm especially thankful for that!

I respect individual's art work today and give credit where credit is due; however I personally believe that we all get waaay to hung up on what is whose.
For if that was the "Case" then everyone has taken much from my great and grandmothers. You see, they were making cards and scrapbooks with embellishments (& not the store boughten kind) long before I even came along and I see many of the same techniques, color combinations, and design elements in things today that I have from them. The only difference is their art was totally hand made with natural dyes, materials, and substances. Personally, I believe we all bring our special brand of style to each and every piece we do and share...whether it was inspired, original, or Case'd. have a Happy........

This thread was very helpful. Thank you everybody! I have a dilema: I have made and sent a package of 8 or 10 blank notecards (as a gift) to friends. Now they are asking for more and want to pay me for these cards! I have resisted this because I'm afraid of copyrighted material. The thread said nothing about selling cards to friends. Is that okay? I do a lot of CASE-ing--where I take a card and change a little to suit the needs/desires of my audience.

Oh I like this one much better. That is what this site is all about, ladies. We are all sharing (borrowing) ideas with one another. Great update to an old definition.
