stamping and not stamping
So I live in a area where I have to drive miles and miles (like 100) to buy a stamp of any kind! Our Walmart carries a handful, but it has been the same handful for a year! So I am trying to come up with ideas on non stamped cards, just paper, layers, some embellishments, etc.
So any ideas out there? And how many of you out there don't use stamps??? |
Ah, but that's what the internet and home stamping companies are for!!! i have to use stamps!

Honestly I order almost all of my stamps online. A lot of places have free shipping is you order a certain amount.

Have you tried finding a Stampin Up demo that will do a customer direct order for you? That means it will come right to your house without having to have a party. I'm in New Jersey and my demo is in Washington state. It works very well for me. I really can't think of any way to make a card without some kind of purchased item ie. embossing folder, embossing powder, etc.

As Joan suggested there are endless online companies that you can purchase through. You have the ability to shop around and compare prices on so many site. I do understand that some people are not comfortable in ordering over the net though.
Do you have anyone that you know of that is a Demo for any stamp comp like Stampin' Up, TAC, CTMH... that you can place an occasional order to help build up a collection? I think you should be able to visit any of those companies' websites and search for one that is close to you. Best wishes! |
If you don't want to buy stamps online or just rather not use them, maybe one thing you can try is quilling.
Here is an example of quilling: http:////www.splitcoaststampers.com/...51?si=quilling You can computer-generate sentiments, or write them yourself... You can search on the internet for free clip art if you need an image. You can use punches, die-cuts, embossing folders etc. Before I ever owned a single stamp, I was making cards by drawing the images... sometimes those didn't turn out so well, but it was fun anyhow. |

You could install some free dingbat fonts, such as this one:
http://www.dafont.com/ladybug-dings.font If you search the web, you will find flowers, animals, and all kind of images. Print, color, cut them and use them on your cards. You could print a whole sheet with all kind of sentiments, and cut them to use on your cards. I prefer stamping :) |
Iris folding is a lot of fun - and generally they are large enough that nothing else is needed with them.

I made a card yesterday that had no stamping - I used my Bug! That thing is so worth the money and makes wonderful cards!

Our Walmart does a lot of patterned paper for scrapbooking - you could look at the patterns and cut out some of them like you would use a die cut.

try using stickers. One year I ordered way to many holiday stickers, so I just used them to send out my cards! Just layer, layer, layer.

Craft Creations is a magazine published in the UK with tons of card ideas that are more papercrafty than stamped. They have projects from back issues of the magazine free online here
They have tons of quilling, paper piecing, decoupage, punches, paper embroidery - just lots of different ideas. |
Here's three cards from my gallery that you could adapt with computer printed sayings instead of stamping. You could use the basic layout and change papers/colors for the season or theme.

I use to live 100 round trip to a mall and stamp stores. I would internet shop all the time. Now I live in Hawaii and the price increase on everything out hereis so high, sometimes it is still cheaper to internet order. There are many wonderful companys with decent shipping and new companys that advertise on SCS that you can order from to fulfill all your needs. Just tell us what you are looking for and we will direct you to the right site!

Stepharella, sounds like you'd make a great demonstrator because you could fill a need in your area. If you're having to drive a distance and are having trouble finding great stamp sets, then so are others in your community. Why not sign up (SU has a great signing incentive right now) and not only get your stamping needs met (and at a discount), but fulfill the needs of others while making money! Sounds like a win/win situation to me.

There isn't even a wall mart were I am! We are lucky to have many Stampin' Up demonstrators, one Close to My Heart demonstrator and one very small locally owned craft store in town. I find that I can make some very nice cards using punched out flowers and brads, stickers, or even my kids craft supplies (sparkles, sequins, foam cutouts etc).
Does the gallery on here have a section of unstamped cards? That would be an idea. Some people have started fun challanges to use odd things on a card like spagetti, or old puzzle pieces. I saw one card in the gallery that used pine needles! I think that lack of selection in stamps leads to even greater creativity in some people! Just think positive and call it a blessing that you can get really creative. |
I have quite a few stamps, but sometimes none seems quite right, and being on a limited budget, I try to use other things I already have. I have a cuttlebug, so some of the small embossing folders have great images that look great instead of a stamp, and you can use rubons or peel off stickers for the sentiments. I have made many a card in a hurry with punches and peel offs. Designer Paper always makes a card much more interesting, with a few little charms on the front.
There is heaps of scope to make a card with no stamps, my favourite right now is a punched circle in the front of the card with a charm hanging in it and a simple rubon sentiment at the bottom. |
Paper-piecing is another great way to embellish cards and scrapbooking pages. Simple designs, like those found in children's coloring books, are fun and easy to do, and the results are quite nice. There are also some online sources for simple patterns for paper-piecing.
Another way to embellish cards is to use die-cuts. I have the old Sizzix machine that I use once in a while. Punches are another way to create nice things for cards, and then you can use pens to decorate and add nice dimension. Linda |
I have made quite a few non-stamped cards, but not posted them here because I thought we weren't supposed to post anything that wasn't stamped in some way.
I don't have any Valentine's stamps--but made nearly two dozen Valentine cards using scraps of handmade or designer paper, vellum, hand-cut hearts, and some heart buttons I found on sale someplace last year that I cut the shanks off of (and a generous helping of Stickles glitter glue). I also sometimes download clipart from the internet and combine that with stickles, etc., and some of my nice patterned paper--this works especially well for those one-of-a-kind cards when you don't have the right stamp and may never need that kind of image again. |

Su! sells tons of papercrafting supplies (punches, scissors, embossing templates, etc.,) and tons of paper. The big deal is now rub-ons and other embellishments.
Would cards without ink stamped on them really violate any prime directive? |
I used to live in an area where I had to drive 120 miles to the nearest stamp store, Hobby Lobby, etc. No stamping or crafting stores except WalMart, and that was worthless. Online shopping is a way of life in the middle of nowhere. I signed up as an SU! demo, made some great friends, spread the joy of stamping, was able to get what I wanted, when I wanted, and I got a 20% discount along w/ a whole lot of free stuff. I've since moved to a more stamp friendly area, and I am no longer a demo (just a good customer), but it was worth it for my stamping sanity. You might check into some of the direct sales companies to see if any appeal to you...it may be worth your time and money.

I do love stamping but I often make cards with no stamping or with just a stamped sentiment 'cos I also love my punches, die cuts and embellishments - especially flowers like the gorgeous Bazzill Bling Blossoms.
But then maybe you can't get dies or embellies either so that's not much help! Go and take a look at the PaperCrafts mag website as they often have free patterns or templates to download. You'll need to browse the 'Create' section.
