Sponge Daubers
Hello,
Anyone know where I can get sponge daubers?
I'd like to be able to ink the edge of cards and do background things like sunsets etc, and have tried using make-up sponges or dry babywipes, but it doesn't work very well.
I've seen someone doing a lovely sunset background using sponge daubers but don't know where to get them.
Or if you know of anything else that will be as good, please let me know!
You can see them in use here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dawB2CEtQuk
Thanks

The sponge daubers in that video are from Stampin' Up! and they are fabulous!

For sponging that blends together really well, I prefer using the big round sponges cut up into wedges. I find that the daubers are too difficult to get nice smooth blends.
Here's a tutorial:

and here's one for sponging a sky:

Have you seen Michelle Zindorf's blog? She uses sponges from the Dollar Tree for her scenic creations. You can also buy daubers at Michael's & SU. You can use make up sponges but make sure they do not have any type of lotion in them.

Michelle Zindorf does amazing work, doesn't she? I use sponge daubers from SU. They are $10.95 for a dozen and Michaels wants $3.99 for 3. I like the daubers for some things, sponges for others, and TH blending tool for other...

Yep, mark me down for loving the SU ones too! I like that you can pop 'em on your finger and blend...for those who are not as coordinated as they would like to be, this is a perk! I have one of the Tim Holtz blender things with the handle on it that I got thinking the handle would give me more control but I end up tearing the edges of my paper. I can't get that rounding motion down I guess.

Hello, thanks for the replies.
I've just cut up a bathroom sponge and tried using that - but the problem I have is that the first dab on the card is quite dark - even with only a little ink - and then when I try to blend it, it doesn't work properly so there are always dark bits.
It's obviously not as easy as they make it appear!

Instead of putting that first dab on your project, first dab your sponge on a piece of scratch paper after you ink it. That usually works for me. Play around with it on some scratch paper and you will start to get the feel for it.

I love my sponge daubers! I got a little clear box that holds 40 of them at a craft show and I can't wait to fill it up! I like using them direct to rubber to ink a stamp or also for inking edges and coloring on paper.
You can find them just about anywhere and SU and A Muse Studios both sell them. Tsukineko makes them so you can probably find them where they sell their brand.

You can get them at Stampin Up. They are $11 (plus shipping) for 12 daubers. A good deal IF you are ordering other items.
Or you can get them at JoAnn's on sale or with a coupon. They are regularly $4.99 for 3 (WAY overpriced), but are currently on sale for $2.99 for 3. Either way, they're going to cost you about $1 each.
I too have used makeup sponges. They work okay if I'm careful and press lightly. But usually, I ended up with moon-shaped ink marks, impressions from my fingernails (which are NOT that long).

Here's a little tip: I wash my SU sponge daubers with a little dish soap and reuse them over and over again. Sometimes I find that in my workshops people mix up the colors but if you wash them you can reuse them.

The sponge daubers at Michael's and JoAnn's are the same ones that SU has...SU has more in a package so you need to figure out if you save any money because of shipping, or just use your coupons and buy them every time you go to M's or JA's...
You can order cases to put your daubers in from Scrapbook.com: Supplies and Scrapbooking Ideas I have them and love them! I label my daubers with their color...
