Default Spellbinders Platinum

After much deliberation I have finally purchased a Spellbinders Platinum machine. It die cuts beautifully. However I can’t seem to emboss with it yet. Regular size embossing folders just slide through and I can’t get a thicker embossing folder through at all. Does anyone have any advice. Thanks in advance.

Has no one got this machine, or have I posted in the wrong forum?

I'm having the same issue, so I was glad I kept my old cuttlebug. I am curious if anyone has a solution also.

I have a Platinum and have the same problem with embossing folders.

For the regular ones, I add a shim or two on the top plate until I get the right pressure. For the thicker folders, I don't use a top plate and add a shim if need be.

Thank you Robin. I been using a Cuttlebug for so many years and decided it was time to upgrade. I have to admit that I’m a bit disappointed that I need to use shims, etc. I’ve tried out various sandwiches, with shims and without and made a note of what is necessary. I guess I thought I wouldn’t have to do this with a more than $200 machine. It comes with various plates that should do the job, but don’t. However it die cuts beautifully.

I did find this video made by Spellbinders which explains how to use some of the different embossing folders, although at times on the video, they seem to imply that if you aren't using Spellbinders products, you might have to figure it out on your own. I usually have a couple cardboard shims that I'll play around with when I have a new folder that is thicker than the normal Spellbinders (non-3D) folders. Start with less thickness and build up until you get a good result without having to force it through the machine.

Thanks Mary Ann. I had actually watched this video. I think I may have ruined one of my embossing folders today putting a shim that was too thick. It’s slightly warped now and doesn’t emboss well. I wanted to upgrade because there are so many new types of embossing folders now. At least I didn’t break my new machine. It does die cut beautifully.

3D embossing folders vary in thickness from 1/8 inch to 5/16 inch thick, depending on when they were made and who they were made by. It doesn't really matter what machine you use, you will need to experiment to find the correct sandwich.

Just to share what I do...on many of my 3D folders I use the platform, the spellbinders embossing mat, the 3D folder and shims on top. It doesn't feel like it is going to emboss (it goes thru easily) but it makes a lovely texture without cracking the paper.

Thanks Diane. Do you mean the tan embossing rubber mat or the blue embossing plate, which are supplied? I’ll give it a try.

From the Platinum 6 manual: Embossing Sandwich for Em-bossing Fold’ers™ - (Stack from bottom up)
1. Platform
2. Em-bossing Fold’er with paper inside
3a. Clear cutting plate (for single or double-sided Em-bossing Fold’ers)
or
3b. 3D Embossing Plate (for 3D Em-bossing Fold’ers™ )
4. Run through the Platinum 6 Machine

I assume the sandwich is the same for the Platinum. The online manual is here: https://www.spellbinderspaperarts.co...structions.pdf

Thanks Vic. Spellbinders no longer sells or supplies the 3D embossing plate. Not sure why. I’ve just been using shims with various embossing folders and put a sticky note on each folder to remind me.

The 3D plate was only for their 3D folders (which they don't make anymore). Here's the sandwiches I use for non-Spellbinders folders:
Thin folders: base, tan mat, EF w/ cardstock, cutting plate (may need embossing plate, instead).

Sizzix 3D & 3D Impresslits: base, folder (with water-misted cardstock, tan mat - not plate.
