Silly Question... Buddy List

This may be a silly question... but what is the purpose of the Buddy/Ignore list?

I don't use it but it would be so that when you loggon to SCS you can see which of your "buddies" are on right then, and also you can ignore your "non buddies" and you will not see their posts in the forums.

Oh my goodness! You would not see their posts at all? I would think it would make a thread rather confusing. There would be a "hole" in the conversation every now and then.
