Should I be offended or feel complimented?
I recently send my DH's Grandmother a set of cards similar to this set by newstamperamy: Gallery at Splitcoaststampers
My DH's Grandmother wrote me a little note of thanks saying it's amazing what they can do with computers these days.
Should I be miffed because somehow the "Hand Stamped by Heidi" on the back escaped her notice, or pleased that they are so professional that she thinks they're computer generated?
I think flattered. Maybe she didn't realize people STAMPED cards. I know my grandmother didn't when I first started.
Maybe you can gently point out that they were NOT computer generated, and that you made them by hand. Chances are she will probably be even MORE thrilled.

I agree. I have had a couple people in my family that ask me where I bought my cards from. Duh! I used to get so irritated but now I just take it as a compliment and let them know I made them. They are usually so surprised and it gets passed around to show people and I feel even more complimented. Your grandmother probably just honestly didn't know a card like that can be made with stamps etc. She will be even more impressed when you let her know.

I think you guys are right. I was going to have the kids all write her a letter this week and I think in mine I'll just say that she'd be surprised to know that all of the cards I send her are handmade by me. I wasn't super offended anyway, it just really surprised me. Thanks you guys!
I would be flattered as well. I just made my grandma a card last week, & she said "This looks handmade". I said "It IS handmade ~ by me". LOL!!! My grandma had never heard of "stamping".
Ha ha! My Dad said basically the same thing - until he saw me make one start to finish. They just don't know. Take it as a compliment that she thought it looked so professional.

I agree. Several people have looked at my cards and said something like I (or my wife) makes cards on the computer, too. Not relatives - people who stop by at craft sales. Oh, well... I think it is a good idea to explain a little. Like others have said, many just do not realize what it means to rubber stamp.

professional for sure
I totally agree with all of you. They just don't know. My grandma thought I printed it off the computer too. She doesn't have a computer so, go figure. I have other people though, closer to my age say, wow what computer program did you print that off of. HELLO!!!! now I may have copied from splitcoast but I did MAKE IT myself. LOL
Just point it out gently that you made it with rubber stamps, that will throw her even more. LOL

Heidi,
When I first started stamping my family members kept asking me if I made my cards on the computer because they had never seen a hand stamped card before. I actually took it as a compliment.

My Mom and Dad thought my cards were computer made too. My Mom was so cute - when I told her I made them myself, she said "Well, does someone tell you what to do or do you come up with them on your own?"
I know how you feel. You put in so much effort and then they do not realize it. I hand stamped, hand colored with colored pencils, cut out and used pop dots on a snowman Christmas card. It was not fast nor easy but I was proud of doing it. PLUS I stamped this on the back:This card was made by hand. If you throw it away those same hands will make a doll of your image and stick pins in its butt. (don't worry these all went to family who know my wacky humor) So I call my mom and ask how she liked my card. Her response: oh, yes the one with the snowman, cute. I asked her if she realized I made it myself and she hadn't! She had not even really looked at it. ggrrrrr So if my Christmas cards are late she has a hissy fit at me but when they are there in plenty of time she doesn't even really look at it. ugh, I'll never ever win.

Heidi those are really pretty cards and I'd take it as a compliment. My family wouldn't know the difference unless it started falling apart and then they'd blame Hallmark for shoddy workmanship!
I made computer generated cards before getting into stamping so if you did that also she may just be confused.
My mother never appreciated handmade and thought it was cheap so when I first started sending the cards I computer generated the back to look like a price code, company name etc. (You’d just have to know my family to understand that one!!!) She thought the card was gorgeous and then I spilled the beans. Now she appreciates my work and even told me so last night!

I'd say its a definite compliment! Gramma probably never even noticed the back of the card (not like me, when I get a Hallmark card I look to see how mucy they paid, lol !!!!).
It has been my experience that at that age, even if you tell her you made them, she may have it stuck in her brain that they are made on a computer. If she comes to visit, I might sit down one day and have her make one with you. Just tell her you thought she would enjoy seeing how you made the cards you send her. If she lives far away, I wouldn't worry. I'd just let her go on thinking they came from a computer. It doesn't really hurt anything. At least she knows you made them somehow, and she is appreciative.
(Maybe someone told her you spend a lot of time on the computer looking at cards.);-)
my dad carries them around with him and shows them to everyone until he gets another one, then he carries that one around. my mom gets mad because they get a little 'worn' around the edges because he keeps them in his pocket.
guess i just have to send them more often .. ha

Now, how sweet is that?? It makes me want to cry it's so sweet!

That's so funny, Rox71!!
Hmm, that would make a great custom stamp (fake UPC code with your name as a company name and then a price).

That is something my mother would say! LOL

DD (age 3) and I make cards together - hers have glitter glue everywhere (I sometimes have to mop it up a bit) while mine are meticulously measured (well, not really), colour co-ordinated (to some extent) and made with tender loving care. Guess whose get ALL the compliments? LOL! -- my mother thinks if you have time to "craft" you should have time to clean (GASP!!!)
Honestly though - I love spending time on my cards. It is my escapism and if someone doesn't appreciate it, oh well, I enjoyed putting it together (and got to spend some crafty time with DD to boot...) regardless...
