Default I learned about tortillions today! (blending stumps)

I've read about using the tortillions w/ colored pencils & gamsol, but haven't tried it. Today in my daughter's art class, where I help, the kids were using charcoals w/ tortillions! The teacher taught them how to hold them. You don't hold it like a pencil, but pick it up w/ your thumb & first finger, pinching style, with the point facing forward. Then, you blend with the side of the pointed part. You can sharpen them, too! She showed us how to use a sanding board. YOu could use sandpaper. YOu gently rub & roll it around (the tip part) to sharpen it.

Then, she said you can use these to blend pastels. DUH! I had never thought of that. My daughter uses eye shadow applicators & q-tips. these don't get fuzzy & they are narrow! I usually Aquapaint these days w/ pastels, but may try these!

She did say not to use the same tortillion with charcoal and pastels. Not an issue for me. I'm a crafter, not an artist! Meaning, I color in things, don't draw them myself! (yes, crafters are artists, too, I know).

OKay, there's your art lesson for the day!

Default Didn't know how to use them

I don't know if this is the same thing but I bought some small pencil looking things with a point....they are rolled up compressed paper thingees....is this what you're talking about?

I bought them at Michael's & they've been sitting in my drawer....I may have to dig them out & give them a try LOL.

Great tip, I hate the cotton mess with q-tips. I'll have to try this!

Rae, it sounds like that's what you have. Let us know how they work! I may have to get my own now at Michael's!
