Selling Dismounted Stamps
 

I'm saying 'dismounted' meaning stamps removed from blocks rather than unmounted (those unused/never mounted).

I know many have been 'dismounting' their stamps & am wondering if you consider their value to be less when you sell them, especially if you dispose of the blocks.

Or do you keep the blocks to have them if you decide to sell a set, since many stampers still prefer mounted stamps.

Or might you offer them for sale with or without the block & price accordingly?

Just curious how you 'dismounters' will approach selling these stamps.

I recently sold a bunch of SU stamps that I'd unmounted from the wood blocks and didn't notice any significant increase or decrease in their value when I compared auctions. Most of them didn't have the blocks but I had them mounted on EZ Mount and they were in CD cases.

I have unmounted most of my sets. .. been working on this for over 1.5 years! I am down to just my background sets. I love to buy them unmounted! send me a list!! :)

However... I prefer that they still have the stickers on them (I used the ATIO&O method). If you don't have the stickers that might affect your ability to resell..depends on th buyer.

I just bought an older SU set I wanted on ebay, and it came mounted and in the case.

Whoever had cut and mounted it did a terrible job. The stamps were not cut from the rubber well at all, and were mounted very crooked on the blocks. The same with the image stickers - they overlapped the ends and were also crooked.

The stamps themselves were in great shape and stamp well. So, in a situation like that, I would have preferred it had been unmounted to start with!

I think you do tend to get a bit less currently when you sell retired sets unmounted, and I agree that I think the sticker image might be a factor. Who knows though...in a few years we may see even more people after those sets that are already unmounted. For me, it's worth it to unmount the stamps despite the fact it might lower the re-sale value a bit. Saving space becomes more and more of a priority as my stamp collection grows. LOL

I think offering the wood blocks as an option would be a good way to go. I know for myself, I don't like to buy wood mounted stamps that I'm paying shipping for. But, there are a lot of people who prefer the wood mounted stamps, so having that option would attract buyers from both camps. :)
