I know they didn't put out a list of retiring wheels last year, but I don't recall for years past. The best guess would be that if a wheel is on the same page as a retiring set and seems to match the set (great example is Crayon Kids and the Crayon ABC's Wheel), the wheel will probably go. If there are wheels you really love, get them.
They usually don't put a wheel list out. Very annoying. If I were you, I buy it if the set it matches is retiring--good general rule although not always accurate.
For instance, Very Merry means Heart Angels will probably go, but I wouldn't bet on Smitten meaning All Heart will go. Hoping Oh So Sweet doesn't mean Chocolate Chips will go!
Better safe than sorry! I'd get 'em now.

Most likely if the wheel has a coordinating set and the set is on the chopping block, the wheel will be too. But not a guarantee. We'll find out for sure with the new catty!
I heard that su doesn't make the wheels they are from another company.so su doesn't have any say in what wheels go.But again I wouldn't take the chance if a set goes more likely the wheel may go.Last year On the farm went but the wheel stayed.so you never really know. That wheel could possible o this year.Just buy the ones you reaaly like. And keep your fingers crossed and hope they don't go.Wheels are cheap enough though so you can always check buy, sell trade section later.on someone usually has them and you won't paya fortune for them here.Ebay will be much higher.
I have 5 sets I need to get before the new caddy comes out.I almost wish they didn't have the summer mini, so we can get everything we need before the new caddy comes out. It's so hard with the summer mini. You have to reaaly buy a lot during the year and hope it doesn't retire the next year.

Actually, no.
SU! has their wheel designs manufacturered for them by another party. They have ALL their accessories manufacturered for them by another party. SU! DOES have absolute say over what wheels go and what wheels stay.
The reason they cannot list retiring accessories, which is what the wheels are classified as, is due to having them manufacturered by another party.
Why? Because it would seriously impact inventory issues.
Inventory levels of product are maintained by the demand of the product; they can gauge how many to order/restock by carefully watching this throughout the year.
However, if in a last minute rush, one particular accessory has a serious and unexpected demand spike, they may be unable to fulfill the orders because they'd have to order additional product from the manufacturer, which can't be produced, and delivered to them within that short of a time frame.
With stamp sets, they are produced right there at SU!'s manufacturing facility, and they can control inventory levels very easily to meet the demands of whatever spikes on the Retiring Set list in these next 2 months.

So will they ever tell us which wheels and accessories will be going, or will it just be a surprise with the new catalog?
That is correct. They will never announce it, and everybody will find out with the release of the new catalog, which accessories remained and which were discontinued.

Didn't I read somewhere recently that SU! bought the company that makes the wheels? I suppose it could have been a rumor, but it seemed a reliable source, as I remember.

Shelli Gardner, CEO and Founder of SU!, and husband Sterling, privately purchased Clearsnap. It was not an SU!/corporate acquisition.
And, yes, Clearsnap manufactures SU!'s wheels, although they are most famous around the world for the widely known Colorbox and Ancient Page Inks.

And just because a stamp set retires, doesn't necessarily mean the wheel will go -- take for instance, On the Farm which has a companion wheel "Farmyard"; On the Farm retired last year, but the wheel was still in this year's catty.
My suggestion, if there is a wheel you "can't live without" get it now You may be able to get one later (B/S/T or bay, and the like).
I remember seeing that list also. In fact, I saw it early enough to place an order with my demo for 2 wheels that were retiring, and she went out of town before she even got her copy of the new catty.
The information was compiled and typed up by a demonstrator who, by luck or sheer fluke, received their copy of the new IB & C shortly before the rest of the entire demonstrator base, in both Canada & the US.
SU! itself did not release an official list.

Boy am I glad that someone else remembered there being a post with the retired wheels and accessories from last year, cuz I had a copy in my 04-05 catty....until 3 weeks ago when I figured it was no longer needed, taking up space, etc. I didn't even think of going to look for the post!
Thanks for finding it and helping me to feel sane again! Makes sense...posted just days before the new catty....
Okie, so how difficult is it to use a wheel? I love the Soft Swirls background (but dont' own it) and adore the coordinating wheel (stars and swirls? swirling stars?). When you want to use a wheel, you also need the handle nad an inking pad, right? sounds like a big investment to me when i don't even know if i would ever use a wheel anyeways. plus i would want a reinker to match the inking pad. *sigh*
I love my wheels but I don't have any inking cartridges. I just use my ink pads. It would probably be slightly easier to have the cartridge, but inking up the wheel gives you enough for the width of a card. They're really easy to use.

Yes, you need a wheel pattern, a handle and either an ink pad to roll it across or an ink-cartridge. I prefer ink cartridges because they offer continuous inking, whereas with the pad, you will run out of ink at the end of the rotation of the wheel, and need to re-ink it to continue.
This can be problematic if wheeling across larger surfaces, such as a whole sheet of card stock, hence many prefer ink cartridges over using a pad.
SU! Classic Reinkers will re-ink either Classic Pads OR Wheel Ink Cartridges.
HTH,
