prismacolor pencils

I just ordered the prismacolor pencils but I thought I was getting the watercolor ones but I got just the colored pencils instead My question is what do you do with just colored pencils (besides color of course) I mean I mostly use watercolors and blender pens but how do you use just colored pencils? HELP before I send them back. Shawnee

Happy Heart 05-25-2006 03:44 PM

DON'T send them back! You'll love them once you've used them. There's going to be a tutorial on using them soon, but, basically, you color your image, then blend the colors using a paper blending tool called a stump, wet with odorless mineral spirits. The colors are much richer than you can get with watercolor pencils. I hated coloring until I discovered this technique. Now I can't get enough of it! I have several examples in my gallery if you want to check them out.

Visit princessink's gallery. Almost everything in it is colored with Prismacolor pencils and gamsol. You will absolutely love this technique! Watch for the tutorial soon!!

Thanks for asking this question! I just read the thread that Ann started about Cecilia (princessink) and her coloring and I was wondering which pencils I wanted, too - but to ask another question, related to the original post - do people like the Prismacolor watercolor pencils, too? I just watched a demo online and thought they looked amazing... do I want BOTH? :)

Colored pencils

Very often Michael's has them on sale so you can't use the coupon. Some time last year I bought the biggest set of like 120 when they had a 50% coupon and they weren't on sale.
I went to Art Media today and they had the 12 new colors of these pencils and lots of others. I'am going to mark off what I really have in my other sets. Also bought a box to store these new colors in for like 3.59. The pencils were like a 1.29 each. You can get a student discount with student body card of like 10%. My kids come in handy some times. Didn't have one of them with me today they are off at college.
The gal was dropping them on to counter. I ask to please not drop them they break so easily. She then did start putting them more gently into the box.
They also had some erasable ones that I had never seen before. You don't want to drop them if you can avoid it. I have been told it breaks the lead in the pencil.

I got a small set of prismacolor pencils today and some mineral spirits...oh my...so pretty....so so so pretty...

Claudiafromgermany,

You can also get the list of colors from this forum to match to the SU colors. Then at www.dickblick.com you can buy the pencils in sets or one at a time. They have a wish list and will save the color numbers you want and you can purchase as you can.

Oooooo, they have the extra new set now at Art Media, huh? Do you ever see coupons for them in the paper? I'll have to go and look. You're right about the lead breaking. Then when you go to sharpen, it pops out and you sharpen deeper.

I have a few questions about these Colored Pencils. Is this something that you can get from SU and is prismacolor a Brand Name? And am I understanding this correctly? Do they come in water color and regular type colored pencils both? Thanks for you smarts here!!!

colored pencils at Art Media

They weren't in a set but came individually at Art Media for the new colors. I was at the store on 82nd in Portland. They had the new colors listed on the display. Prismacolor is a name for colored pencils made by Stanford or something like that. You can buy them in sets or at some places like Michael's you can get them individually. Not all Michael's carry them individually.

Lisa Dolson 05-25-2006 09:04 PM

Mariah, Prismacolor is a brand name of artist quality pencils. Prismacolor pencils are available in colored pencils (soft lead) like they are talking about here, in watercolor pencils, and Verithin (hard fine lead for technical drawing). Prismacolor colored pencils are not available from SU!. SU! does have a watercolor pencil set but I'm not sure if Prismacolor manufactures them. HTH.

Where did you get a 50% off coupon for Michaels?

amber31 05-26-2006 09:28 AM

My guess...

I'm guessing people are going to be using the Joann's 50% coupon that just came out. Please correct me if I'm wrong! :)

OK, I'll bite, where's the JoAnn coupon? All I have is a 40% or 10% off my entire purchase on Memorial Day. FYI, my coupon is for the store, not the 'net.

amber31 05-26-2006 09:39 AM

Oops...

You are absolutely right about the Joann's coupon. I got my coupons screwy in my mind. Joann's has the 40% and 10% (seperate) and Michael's is apparently coming out with a 50% for Memorial Day weekend. See this post...#21

http:////www.splitcoaststampers.com/...d.php?t=149248

Sorry for the confusion! :)

barbcowan 05-26-2006 09:52 AM

Thanks! It's amazing how obsessive I am regarding the coupons

amber31 05-26-2006 09:56 AM

:)

Aren't we all?

-Michael's 50% coupon

I found one in this weeks Food Day ads. If you don't get a local paper they send this paper to you which has some of the ads from major retailers and local grocery stores. Usually when there is an ad for Michael's for 50% in this one will show up in the Sunday regular paper to. Just be ready for long lines when you do get to Michael's. I sweet talk my husband to come stand in line with me. I all ways can use hermafix adhesive or a new magazine.

kphorse 05-26-2006 11:37 AM

This link will take you to the thread that has the download for the SU to Prismacolor pencils.

Hope this helps

HI! I am a newbie....and have more questions!! Where do you get the Joann's and Michael's coupons? Can you get them on-line? How do you use the Prismacolor pencils?

Thanks a million!!

ClaudiafromGermany 05-30-2006 05:37 AM

you can get joanns coupons when you sign up at their web site.
michaels coupons are in sunday paper or come to my house in advertisemet papers. usually michaels flyers are hidden in my rite aid special paper.

when you start getting the coupons from joanns you can use them at michaels, they accept them too.

with prisma color pencils i can not help you i just bought them on the weekend but if you do a search here on the board you can find a lot of good information. i was last night online here on the boart til 2.30 am. reading about the pencils
