Papercrafting saving my kitty's life...

My kitty, whose name is Starbug, cut herself badly on her stomach. We took her to the vet because the cut was looking infected. It was much worse than we thought, so the vet sedated her, cleaned up the wound and put a drain in her. (Hope this isn't too yuk for you). Just before she came to, she bled badly so they put a large bandage around her.

This morning she managed to get out of the bandage, but she stopped bleeding. The vet told us it was okay to leave it off. But she wanted to pull out the drainage straws.

We have never had success with putting tubs around her head to stop her from licking because she got so distressed, but we needed to stop her from pulling the drainage straws. What to do?

TaDa!! I got an A5 sheet of acetate, my 2 inch circle punch and my crop a dile plus a piece of ribbon. Punch a half circle on one long side of the acetate, use the CAD to punch two smaller holes. Then I grabbed two clear reinforcement holes that I have used on my scrapbook page inserts and reinforced the holes. Threaded the ribbon through the hole and VOILA! kitty has a clear protective bib. She cannot see it, but she is vaguely aware it is there and SHE CANNOT LICK HER DRAINAGE STRAWS.

Thanks for listening...

What an ingenius idea to help your kitty! Way to go!!

lylacfey 06-24-2011 04:10 AM

I love it. She's stylish too. I am really glad to hear she's ok. I wish her a speedy recovery.

winnieu 06-24-2011 04:25 AM

That is very clever and will be a great help to kitty. Mine used to flip out if I tried to collar her and it made matters worse as she would be leaping around and agitated. Thanks for sharing that idea.

weims 06-24-2011 04:40 AM

I want to see a picture of her designer kitty bib!

stamper1996 06-24-2011 07:15 AM

I too want to see a photo. That's very clever of you, and it's a win for both you and kitty! I hope she gets well soon; that must be painful for her.

There is a creative solution to every problem! You are very resourceful!! Sending positive healing thoughts to your kitty for a speedy recovery.

Poor Kitty. I hope she heals quickly. Glad you could help her.

Awesome that you were able to come up with something from your supplies!! I dont think any animal likes those cones.. they always get so distressed wearing them. I hope your kitty makes a fast recovery!!!

Karenwhite 06-24-2011 02:34 PM

thanks everyone, she is doing much better this morning. She finally relaxed enough to get some really long sleeps in and seems therefore to be so much better.

I tried taking photos of the 'bib' but it is hard to see I might put a couple of unwanted stickers onto to it and try then to photograph.

It is so much softer than the usual cones.

LorraineBK 06-24-2011 02:56 PM

What a great idea!! I hope Starbug is all healed soon. They truly are like our children. I think it's worse when an animal is hurting than when we hurt. There's no way to explain to an animal what's going on. They just think we're being a royal pain in the...butt.

Oh my goodness - I'm so glad your kitty =^..^= will be okay - GREAT idea
My furry family send many good wishes to Starbug

Not as exciting ... I used a scrapbook ring to re-position / raise the kitchen chandelier after it fell & konked me in the head.

Maybe not as exciting but certainly as smart (if not smarter).

We should start a thread on ways our crafting has helped in other areas besides crafting.

sillyfilly 06-24-2011 06:53 PM

Wonderful! What an ingenious idea! I hope she recovers soon.

KalaKitty 06-24-2011 08:55 PM

Congratulations on this great idea.

Sending good thoughts for Starbugs recovery.

Awww, poor Starbug; glad she is doing better today. Great idea you had to fashion her a bib...very clever!

When our kitty, Tavi, was spayed, she chewed through the glue holding her incision together within minutes of arriving home. We quickly took her back to the vet to get staples and a kitty straight jacket; the poor thing was still goofy from the medications and didn't have a clue what she was doing for a couple of days. Fortunately her sister, Caramel, did just fine. So glad you were able to fashion a simple solution; like another poster said, they are our babies!

weims 06-25-2011 05:45 AM

We had a dog (a big one) who had to wear a cone for a bit. She hated it. She'd run into a corner and get stuck. Of course, she also figured out that it could cover her entire food bowl and no one else could get it. That and she could catch flies with it. She was a funny dog!

dottiejdavis 06-25-2011 07:28 AM

Before we got our 10 wk old kitty, we tried to find a really unique name for her...grandson ended up calling her Snickers. Now thats fine but I love Starbug and even the name TwinkaDink. LOL. I would love to hear the names of other cats you gals have named just in case we make an addition to our little family.

Karenwhite 06-25-2011 01:21 PM

The name Starbug comes from the BBC TV show Red Dwarf, which probably very few have heard of. It was a comedy but really well done. Anyhow, Red Dwarf was the name of the spaceship, but the little shuttles were Bug shaped Starbugs.

Our Starbug (cat) is basically a white cat, but she has ginger and black patches across her back and she has a huge fuzzy tail. She has one blue eye and one greenish yellow eye. She is quite large for a cat, although not huge. She isn't quite three years old yet so we still call her a kitten (yes, I know that technically once she turns one she isnt a kitten, its just me).

I have to make another bib for her as she managed to tear the last one, so I will put some colour onto it and get a photo of her wearing it.

Sorry to hear about your furbaby. But what a great idea using tools and supplies from your scrap stuff.

Take care of her. She sounds like a wonderful furbaby!!!

I have to say I am so impressed at your creativity and I'm so glad that your kitty is improving. Thanks for sharing a really cute story.

Iriseyes 06-28-2011 07:42 PM

Karen, so glad your kitty is doing well, and that you were able to help her out with papercrafting supplies! And here in Canada we know all about Red Dwarf - one of the funniest shows ever!

Awesome story! Super smart and creative idea...just brilliant! Happy to hear your kitty is on the mend.

My kitty just had to have his tail bobbed. He got bit and "lost" half it...then it kept getting infected and causing him to be sickly. So he had to have it cut off like a bob-tailed kitty. =( He had a beautiful tail but now he is healthy & happy again!

Oh sorry to hear that, but at least he has a good outcome. Sad he had to loose his bestest tail, but better than loosing bestest kitty. Heart

As my husband would say "That's farmer smart!" So glad your Starbug is doing better.
