Upline and downline?

What do those mean? Am I guessing correctly when the upline is like the "boss" and the downline is someone who has become a demo after another demo? I want to be in the know!

My demo's upline made this adorable, and I mean adorable, "Bless U" kleenex carrier for a swap.

Well, it's not really a boss. It's more of a teacher/support type thing. As an upline, we work with the new downline to learn the business, help them if questions arise, give moral support, applaud them for their accomplishments, etc.

Yes, the downline is the person who signs under the upline

And your sideline are all the other demos who signed up under your upline. Look at it this way:

Upline = parent
Sideline = sibling
Downline = child

That's how I remember it, anyway!

Most direct sales companies do not let you sign up just be contacting the company. You need to sign up under an existing demonstrator or consultant. This is your upline. She should be responsible for helping you get started and trained. Since she is making a small percentage of commission off of your sales, it is in her best interest to provide you with training and support. Unfortunately, some uplines are just looking for numbers of demonstrators or consultants in their organizations, and do nothing to support your business. This is why it is very important to choose your upline well before signing up.

When you sign up, you become the downline to your upline. When new demos or consultants sign up under you, they become your downline. The best gift you can give to your downline is to be a supportive upline.

I was just curious - my demo thinks I'm definitely in line to be the next demo and I'm just weighing my options - you know supporting my stamp habit and wish list, versus time and money spent.
