Default Online stores charging restocking fee?

Is this something that is common? It might be and this may be the first time I have come across it. I ordered a die from an online store and when it arrived, I did not like it as much as I thought I would...to return, if I want a refund, there is a 15% restocking fee. I could get a store credit and then I would not have to pay the fee...but I would rather just get my money back.

Is this common practice?

It's a common practice in most distribution - we charged it all the time in the lighting business. It's expensive to re-house the product after it's sold - you have to re-shelve, re-inventory and pay the carrying costs. I don't know if it's common in the craft industry - I've never returned anything - which is why the walls are closing in - LOL

pretty much every place we buy materials from at work also charges it...
the exception is when they ship you the wrong thing.. those usually can be returned for a credit with no fees.

I've seen signs in stores where I live that state they do it also.

Thanks for responding!! Guess I am going to have to suck it up then, huh? Lesson learned; I will wait on my next order until I have seen the item "in person" to be sure I like it. It's so hard when shopping on line because you CAN'T see things and hold them and really look at them. This was a $28 die though so I don't want to keep it and end up never using it.

I think it is a common practice, too. If you also have to pay to ship it back, it may be worthwhile posting it on the buy/sell board? Just a thought

Could you give the die to a friend or as a gift?
