Every cop loves a GC to http://www.Galls.com - especially a NEW cop; there is so much that they need that isn't supplied by their department!! (mourning bands, clipboards, extra flashlights, gear bags, etc.)

Tell him CONGRATS from someone who's been there!! ;)

A Galls GC is a great idea. As for the card, Jolee's Boutique has a great set of PD embellishments that would really personalize the card to the occasion. You could probably troll the web to find a poem or appropriate verse for a police grad. Good luck and don't forget to post the card so we can all ooh and ahhh!

I have been a police officer for 11 years the last 2 I have not patrolled because I am taking care of my mother. Below is my favorite poem. I am also posting a link to some other police poems. Galls is a great source. But from the years of reading LE material the best thing I have come upon is The Bulletproof Mind. I have an exert below its an audio recording and I think every officer should hear that before they go out on patrol.

The Bullet-Proof Mind, helps build your mental muscle for winning in deadly confrontationsand surviving the aftermath. In this special Calibre Press production, Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, shares what he's learned from the survivors of deadly force encounters, plus his own research into the nature of violence today.

Heres the link to where you can get this:

http://www.killology.com/audio.htm

Also the book On Killing is something every cop should read.

My x FIL was an officer too. He was forced to shoot and kill a man armed with a bat that had just assaulted a store owner and had assaulted his partner and almost knocked the gun out of my FILs hand with the bat. My FIL is a great man and a great officer and even though the shooting was justified and he was cleared by the department, the Justice Department and every department that had to review it he had a hard time working past what he had to do. I purchased the above audio and book for him and read it myself. EVERY officer should use both. But the Bulletproof mind is just awesome!

"I am the Officer"
I have been where you fear to be,
I have seen what you fear to see,
I have done what you fear to do -
All these things I have done for you.
I am the person you lean upon,
The one you cast your scorn upon,
The one you bring your troubles to -
All these people I've been for you.
The one you ask to stand apart,
The one you feel should have no heart,
The one you call "The Officer in Blue,"
But I'm just a person, just like you.
And through the years I've come to see,
That I am not always what you ask of me;
So, take this badge ... take this gun ...
Will you take it ... will anyone?
And when you watch a person die
And hear a battered baby cry,
Then do you think that you can be
All these things you ask of me?

There is another book called "I Love a Cop" that my DH's department gave to him when he graduated from the academy. It's meant more for the spouses of cops, to help them understand the issues cops face and how they can affect the cop's personal life. I can say it helped me!

And Angie, thanks for sharing the poem. I've been to that website before, but it's been quite awhile. I forgot all about it!

My DH is a cop, and I know there are a lot of things he's seen that he won't tell me about. He keeps me blissfully ignorant. Thank God for good friends on the force that he can talk to!

WOW..thanks for all the great responses. I sent out a mass email to all friends and family about the galls site to get a huge gift card for him. He has worked so hard these last few months, he deserves it! I put the poems and other sites in favs... and I'll go looking for "I love a Cop" for my sister. THANKS SO MUCH!
