I have been a police officer for 11 years the last 2 I have not patrolled because I am taking care of my mother. Below is my favorite poem. I am also posting a link to some other police poems. Galls is a great source. But from the years of reading LE material the best thing I have come upon is The Bulletproof Mind. I have an exert below its an audio recording and I think every officer should hear that before they go out on patrol.
The Bullet-Proof Mind, helps build your mental muscle for winning in deadly confrontationsand surviving the aftermath. In this special Calibre Press production, Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, shares what he's learned from the survivors of deadly force encounters, plus his own research into the nature of violence today.

Also the book On Killing is something every cop should read.
My x FIL was an officer too. He was forced to shoot and kill a man armed with a bat that had just assaulted a store owner and had assaulted his partner and almost knocked the gun out of my FILs hand with the bat. My FIL is a great man and a great officer and even though the shooting was justified and he was cleared by the department, the Justice Department and every department that had to review it he had a hard time working past what he had to do. I purchased the above audio and book for him and read it myself. EVERY officer should use both. But the Bulletproof mind is just awesome!
"I am the Officer"
I have been where you fear to be,
I have seen what you fear to see,
I have done what you fear to do -
All these things I have done for you.
I am the person you lean upon,
The one you cast your scorn upon,
The one you bring your troubles to -
All these people I've been for you.
The one you ask to stand apart,
The one you feel should have no heart,
The one you call "The Officer in Blue,"
But I'm just a person, just like you.
And through the years I've come to see,
That I am not always what you ask of me;
So, take this badge ... take this gun ...
Will you take it ... will anyone?
And when you watch a person die
And hear a battered baby cry,
Then do you think that you can be
All these things you ask of me?
